Cultural barriers keep me from fully understanding it, but it seems like another mode of expression for bands besides just music. They may go for obscure looks and straight men may cross dress. There are a ton of VK bands, some play amazing music while some are talentless pretty boys going on looks alone for sales from fangirls.

plastic tree used to be very visual and have a very heavily influenced visual kei sound. of course since theyve gotten earlier they toned it down a bit, but i read in some interview before that they dont want to be catergorized as any kind of genre now.

Actually, sometimes they still connect with Visual Kei. For example, one of Ryuutarou's photoshoots in late 2008 (I think it was August?) had him wearing a very Visual Kei style.

They don't want to be categorized as anything though, so I wouldn't put them as Visual Kei. (Depsite the fact that they do tend to that image.)

This isn't visual kei either, raincube/reitarulez... Not even bloody close... Yes, Plastic Tree IS art, which is exactly why they AREN'T Visual Kei... Visual Kei is an image-driven fashion statement. It's completely shallow; makeup first, costume first, music later (If at all, considering so many VK artists could be active for 5-6 years and release only SINGLES AND MUSIC VIDEOS)... It's funny, as upset as you were at that bloke's mislabeling, awfully quick you were to do it yourself...
