To me there is no version to touch this even though it has been covered beautifully by many and of course Jimmy Ruffin. His stage performance of it though, was truly the best.
Dave Stewart sporting a PiL shirt, kinda ironic considering his bitterness towards punk. I guess he did acknowledge that some good things came out of punk, but if you're running a prog band like National Health and major labels all reject your group, promoting crass simplistic rock instead, then I can see why he'd think punk revolution was mostly detrimental. Not that PiL was exactly punk, but it did spring out of that basic movement.
@harvey1954 Not Barbara actually... that lady is Amanda Parsons backing vocalist of "The Northettes" who used to sing with Hatfield and The North, and who sang BVs on the single
@Charlesfrogg just to repeat fyi that lady is Amanda Parsons backing vocalist of "The Northettes" who used to sing with Hatfield and The North, and who sang BVs on the single
Of course the track is time specific. The production is very much of the early 80s but who cares?. It was a great interpretation of a great track, and it was different. Colin sounds great as always.
Absolutely love it. Note that there is no percussion on this track except for the hand-claps. Might it have been Bill Bruford? Anyway, that beautiful Enyaesque creature is Barbara Gaskin, Dave Stewart's wife.
@PaulMacD58 'Fraid not matey...that lady is Amanda Parsons backing vocalist of "The Northettes" who used to sing with Hatfield and The North, and who sang BVs on the single
@PaulMacD58 No probs....on and off have followed Dave Stewart's stuff..and Colin Blunstone's voice still sounds as gorgeous as ever....btw, Dave still lives with his musical partner and missus Barbara Gaskin...
@christof669 Dave Stewart - the same Dave Stewart who was part of the Eurythmics? If so, he was married to Sibonne from Shakespeare's Sister for awhile so your theory about him still living with Barbara Gaskin aren't fully accurate.
@EddieAlda This of course is NOT the same Dave Stewart as the Eurythmics. This Dave Stewart is the great keyboard player and composer featured in the above video! Dave Eurythmics Stewart is of course a guitarist. If you want to check out this Dave Stewart's work, try his and barbara's albums on Burning Shed, and the works of Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Bill Bruford etc etc...
Absolutely love it. Note that there is no percussion on this track except for the hand-claps. Might it have been Bill Bruford? Anyway, that beautiful Enyaesque creature is Barbara Gaskin, Dave Stewart's wife.
FUNNY HOW IT SOUNDS SO "EIGHTIES"....DIDN'T REALISE THE EIGHTIES HAD A SOUND AT THE TIME....GREAT CLASSIC...LOVE BLUNSTONE VELVET VOICE! YOU ALMOST EXPECT NICK KERSHAW TO BE THERE!!
Yep, I guess everyone has their own opinion but I always liked this version, especially the slightly atonal sections that create an unsettling vibe and the strong intro and outro riff.
"On Friday night I was walking home down wet, empty City Road cold and alone, no comfort in sight, wretched. Too many people people around me seem to be pairing off, I'm the only one who's been bereaved. The roots of love grow all around, but for me they come a-tumbling down.
Hi MoodyFennec- thanks for your answer! I actually have a recording with out that kind of sad "cliceticlank" from the synth/keyboard which comes halfway into this version. Thats why I actually thought this WAS another (later) version... Colin sure made a good rendition of this song. This is anything but limp and soulless- it s h o u l d be slow and sad - just listen to the lyrics ... "Always moving but going nowhwere"- I just love that line. So true!
Personally....and thats what music is all about.....I am 50 yeaqrs old. I feel Colin Blunstone helped rescue this version of a song that was already alive and kicking. Dave Stewart put a 1981 slaNT ON IT WITHOUT REAlising how dated it nwould sound just a few years later. Colin, however, could sing this at any time in any era....love the guy
This is the one an only guy to sing this song - fab voice and a great interpretation. The original (first) version Colin made way back when is even better - it's simply the best (Sorry Jimmy Ruffin, Westlife, Joe C, Paul Young, Boy George, Joan Osborne and all the others who made a go at this song!) Great to learn that Colin still is singing!!
@INGALILLB I'm sorry but when you say Jimmy Ruffin had a go at it is ridiculous because he recorded it first in 1966 so all the others including Colin were covers.
Oh, this is a MUCH better vid. I did like learning from the other one that this single sold more than 2 of his other very popular songs together, but I'll gladly give up the banner and this one is longer in length too. Thank you!

Awesome. I love the keyboard at the beginning (which you can't hear that well on this video because of the presenter).

Limp and souless. Colin Blunstone was Great in the Zombies, but this is pale.
The weak arrangement doesn't help. Sorry
