i absolutely love the jam,saw them 6 times, but i always felt weller made himself look stupid in these kind of situations, girl is only asking him a few simple questions, always seemed to be with female interviewers, maybe he was nervous around girls, and thats why he acts silly,to try to hide his embarasment
Not to nitpick, but Bruce (being the bass god he is) should have used one of his Rickenbacker basses for this tune as he did on the recording. The tone of the Fender Precision here just does not cut it. He should have had JJ Burnel (The Stranglers) school him on how to make the P sound as spicky as a Rick.
Shoot me down if I'm wrong, but isn't this song about the end of the Jam ? It was pretty much the last thing they ever recorded, and that's what I remember thinking at the time.
@TheWhupper This song is from 1980, The Jam split in 1982 and came up with a few more classics in those two years though they did adopt a more soul tinged element to their style after 1980 so I suppose in a way this song was one of the last of their intense power punk edged records before Weller began making the gradual transition to The Style Council.
The most awesome three piece band ever. No one could ever touch them . I've never seen a more powerful band.
I think the quick witted comments were pointed at the guests all sitting at tables eating food if you ever watch the full interview. There's also questions about the crowd spitting at them at live gigs, as Weller turns around to Foxton and says "Can you believe this". This was 1981 and punk had long gone, but i think the lady who hosted the show was so ill informed, believing it was 77
The Jam's music was growing darker and more complex...
"I feel so old and I feel so young, I just can't grow up to meet their demands..."
Band leader of a very successful act, and just about sole writer who had to keep the hits coming, Weller had a lot on his shoulders, and I bet this was an autobiographical line.
Funeral Pyre - The Jam [Woking, Surrey, England] - 1981 - "Good first impression. The recording is the most fiercely delivered amongst the group's singles discography, and is noted for Rick Buckler's particularly frenetic and prominent drum track." - Snap! [2 CD] [import] (Polydor Ltd UK) [Disc 2]-2006.
Hey, I know you hate me & will automatically berate me for disagreeing...but he was fucking hysterical in this interview, and if you've seen the whole thing, you might understand why he was acting like a jerk - the chick was clueless, and asking some pretty ridiculous questions.
@asmorgan88 You see,you too easily jump to conclusions : i do not ever berate anyone for merely disagreeing with me.You still dont appear to see i dont mind people having another viewpoint to me.On this occasion i'll say that i did see the rest of this ; it may in fact be on the Jam dvd box set i've got but i dont remember her first questions although he never gave straight answers to the sensible questions that she asked in this clip.Oh and i dont hate you at all as i dont know you

Every member of The Jam was very intense and talented; sonic guitar, melodic bass, war drums. I miss these guys.

Loved the comment about Buckler "unleashing the back-hand" though :)

"The A-Side was 'Absolute Beginners', the B-Side is 'Scampi & Chips'."
"And the next song?"
"This next one is called "Chicken in a Basket"!!!

I agree- the wonderful bass playing really steers the song along. Bruce Foxton is a name to remember. This is one of my favourite Jam tracks.
