His emotion at the end was GUILT.

But he denies it because he's an asshole, and when he lost Marissa to Ryan, he freaked out. In season 4 he told Seth (or was it Ryan?) that he didn't mean to kill her, and I believe him. He's an asshole, but he was in love with Marissa and he would never have killed her on purpose. She's the best that has ever happened to him, but he can't handle it.

towards the end it got a little deeper, when volchok realised he'd made a big mistake, and was quite possibly in love with her.

but i think the main point at the beginning was to show that Marissa was Vulnerable after the death of Johnny, and all her troubles, not to mention breaking up with Ryan, so it was kind of like, a pity relationship. at first.

then they got deep.

they were great together,

wish that they hadn't wrote her off, and even more so that Volchok was the one to do it!
