Hello, Siniavski. I'm from Brasil (with "s", of course). Balalaika is an amazing, phantastic instrument which delites me so much. Sincerely, I would like to learn how to play it, but in my country it does not exist. How and where may I buy one? Thanks for your lessons.
Aleksej Siniavski, your tutorial DVD has helped me to get where I am with the balalaika today - thank-you! With no teacher to practise with, your lessons always gave me something to aspire and learn from; there was no I could have learnt as much as I know now on my own.
alex, i have one question. how do you get such a good tone when plucking the nylon strings? whenever i have to play a part of a melody on them it sounds awful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!!!! I have had a balalaika for a few years, and have been teaching myself from old Russian books. This is a huge help!
The should be tuned e-e-a, where the A is is above the middle C on the piano, also called A first octave. This is a metal string about 0.28-0.29 mm, and the other two strings are nylon 3rd guitar strings are tuned to E first octave. I will have a video on balalaika set-up pretty soon.
How much is a balalaika?

The Balalaika sounds close to a banjo when played a certain way.

The right hand techniques look very similar to those used in flamenco guitar.

I bought a 6 string balalaika (three pairs in unison), but it's better for just strumming rather than picking.

5/5 and subscribed.
I played a balalaika yesterday for the very first time and fell in love with it!
One question: do you need long nails to pluck the strings, like in classical guitar?
ghegozi 2 years ago
No, not at all. You do not really pluck strings, you strum them. Like Roberta Flack, only with your own fingers. :)
