@98bigbutt how? Its actually forced integration. No one ever talks about the flipside of gentrification, section 8 housing being built in the suburbs.
Look, I don't wish for you to kicked out of your homes to make way for more affluent people. I am just commenting on the situation. You wanna be mad, protest the developers. You guys are verbally attacking the people moving in. It is not there fault, nor is it right for you to call them names and act in hateful way. Also, yeah, I did say don't be hateful, and what you do? First post you can, you disrespect me. You should be against the developers not me or the new tenants. Those are your enemies
We are talking about people being forced out of their apartments in a city where it is difficult to find anything affordable by opening a newspaper or looking on Craigslist. Yet this one tells people not to be so "hateful" about it. I agree with Zarah and Bksbest. I never asked a landlord to "give' me an apartment, just charge a fair price. I'm sorry, "hipsters" from Bumfuct- I don't do 4 roommates and sitting on the floor while thinking I'm cool.
@Dottiecurran@ZarahLean@Bksbest21 Hey, ya'll can gang up on me if you like, it makes me none. First of all my family isn't racist. I am not racist. My posting here is not racist. You seem to be paranoid. Nobody is chuckling over you and your housing situation. Atleast I am not. I am a good person and I believe in equality of all. Oh, and Dottie, please don't disrespect me by referring to me as "this one". You can call me Gutierrez. @Zarah, are you calling me the piece of shit? I would hope not
@Dottiecurran Do you think it is right to call these people names who mean no harm to you. You don't know if that is entirely true for ALL of those people. That is wrong to call names and accuse. Seriously. C'mon now Dottie.
They are making Brooklyn nice. There's nothing wrong with that. I understand what you are saying, but there are other areas you can move to that are affordable. This is prime real estate and it will fetch a premium. Brooklyn is just changing again. This time it's changing more due to the class of people. I do feel for you. I hope you look at it as changing from poorer people to more affluent people than Black people to White people, because remember, you once took it from White people.
@IslenoGutierrez I am white. You are from Louisiana. I was born in Brooklyn. The so called "hipsters" moving in are NOT making the area better. They live in filth with many roommates, for the most part. They are just driving the prices up to the point working and middle class New Yorker can't stay. Not, as you think, a better class of people coming in. To them, Brooklyn only has value while it is "cool" so they care nothing about it. Let them move out. Back to mommy.
@ZarahLean That is not true. I have a good friend of mine who just moved into one of these places in brooklyn that you are talking about. My friend is not filthy and neither are her friends that she surrounds herself with that are from the same development. They live in nice places and their places are clean and very very nice looking. I seen it with my own eyes Zarah. The prices are being driven up because the neighborhood is being restored and in turn becoming a "nicer" area than before.
I grew up in Bushwick in Brooklyn. At one time it was mostly working class Italian and German American. Then it became mostly Latino. Now it is becoming a place where local people can not afford to live. "Hipsters" have invaded and prices are sky high. They fashion themselves are counter culture yet dress the same, think the same and mostly look anemic. They are the epitome of uncool.
@ZarahLean It's probably the grandchildren of those Germans and Italians.Maybe the grandchildren finally got the chance to go to college, like the grandparents wanted for themselves, but couldnt acquire it. Just maybe. I don't see anything wrong with it. Neighborhoods change all the time. It changed from a White neighborhood to a Black one, it's just changing again, this time back to White. It is what it is.
@IslenoGutierrez I disagree with you that there is nothing wrong with so many areas of NYC becoming so expensive that local people are forced out. I know it can be argued that the way Bushwick had become in the 1970's (fires, crime) forced people out, too. None of it is good. I grew up in Bushwick and went to college but still could not afford to pay $3000 a month rent. I find the hipsters/(bull)artists the most putrid of all. In my opinion, there is nothing "hip" about conformist hayseeds.
@ZarahLean This is such hateful things to say. These people don't mean you any harm. They are just looking for somewhere to live, just like you. It just turns out that they can afford more. Why do you say such hateful things against these people? If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at the developers only, not people who are looking for a nice place to live. That is wrong. I know these types of people, they are very nice people.
@IslenoGutierrez I suppose it is not hateful to support people being kicked out into the street who don't want to take in roommates in order to pay $5000 a month rent? I lived in buildings with "hipsters" and they were horrible to be around. Maybe they can leave the front door open in the bayou, but not in Bushwick. Shopping carts and menus lttered the hall. Loud music at 3 am. Illegal rent increases? Who cares? Trust funds ! As soon as a new area is deemed "cool" they leave, good riddance.
@IslenoGutierrez And furthermore, you live in Louisiana so have no expertise on the subject of gentrification in Brooklyn. The rent situation in New York is TOO DAMN HIGH for working and middle class people who do not get public assistance. And while we native Brooklynites might not have as much money as suddening hip Mary Ellen Applebee, my clothes are clean. I don't think mommy will pick up after me.
@IslenoGutierrez Zarah's info on Brooklyn life doesn't come from having "a good friend" living there,Mr. Gutierrez. She knows. I'm glad she mentioned menus in the hallway because this is a hipster trademark as they have to order food all the time. It creates a security problem as the menus sticking out from your door tell everyone you are away. Just ONE of the "bettering" the area these leftover reject hippies bring! Way cool!
@Dottiecurran also @ZarahLean, Hey guys, I do understand your concern, and believe me I do feel for you in your situation. Believe me I wish you had an alternative, but it looks like you really don't. All that I am saying is don't be so hateful towards people. Also, yes I do live in Louisiana, actually New Orleans to be exact, it's starting to happen here a little. But I been to brooklyn many times to a friends house. You know it won't be stopped, right? Are their just as good places nearby?
With flooding, hourly long commutes 2&from work, white folks got tired of that shit & said " eh, why can't we live closer 2 our jobs"! Their sense of entitlement & arrongance is what fuels gentrification. They don't give a fuck where the poor ppl end up.
Quick break down in american history: when ww2 ended the montgomery gi bill was giving 2 soilders. This soley started the white flight 2 the then new "suburbs". Whites didn't want 2 live amongst blacks in the inner city. Now fast forward some 50yrs later & those same white folks ( well not the same but their grandkids ) want their city back!
i wonder how the italians of east harlem felt when the givernment came in, kicked them out of their apartments, knockled the buildings down and built projects for the puerto rican immigrant wave (that was funded by ny taxpayer dime) sponsored by Fiorello Laguardia?
probably the same way blacks felt when the American government flooded the country with Italians and Irish immgrants to keep from paying and hiring blacks.
Blacks got pushed to the side a lot more than every other group. I do know Italians flooded the country to keep blacks from getting jobs. It was not their fault though. The government was the ones that invited them.
no, sorry but the fact is that the apartment buildings that were in teh area (there's still some left) were all 5 or 6 story walk ups. Those were full of italians until they were demolished and rebuild as project buildings, which didn't happen in a week. It is a fact...and my only point is that someone is always being displaced so there's no sense in complaining, either pay the new rent or move, thats all you can do.
If enough of a market for teh housing in an area exists then developers can come in and buy the land/buildings and convert them to luxury condos and apts. The lower teh crime rate goes the more likely wealtheir people will move to areas that tehy used to think were too dangerous to live in. A huge drop in crime is always a double edged sword. The area gets better but then the inhabitants cant afford to live there.
Wait she said phenomenon? Yeah a phenomenon so common it is happening on a continual basis in every major city in America. I would like to introduce people to what's called a city plan. This is a document that lays out the city's growth plan for the next 20 years or so. Here in San Diego Barrio Logan was permtted for construction of buildings up to 4 stories. Abracadabra gentrification is on the way! Buy now to sell/build later!
To think they are bitching about gentrification. Ever heard of a reverse mortgages? People that have equity in their home can take a loan to provide for themselves in their golden years (Soc Sec won't cut it sorry). So when they die bye bye inheiritance. @Bksbest21 Ok, here it is since you want to be difficult. Back in those days, it was Whites with Whites and Blacks with Blacks. That was the past. But today it's still like that in Black neighborhoods. Let a White person try to go or move to a Black neighborhood and watch the racism unfold in front of your eyes from Blacks. Ok, maybe this place was not an immigrant nation 1000 years ago, but it is now. Even though Blacks didn't "immigrate", this is still a country of descendants of immigrants.
