I'm sorry. I never wrote this down. This is a combination of arrangements. I started from a Dan C Holloway arrangement. Then i added my own stuff. Check out his You tube channel. DanCHolloway.
Sir, I've never seen such a gracious version of that song. I just wish the solos would have been added to it, especially the last one. Anyway, you made a very personal and amazing version of the best-ever song from Mark Knopfler. It sounds clean, perfect, and brought tears in my eyes. You rock ! :-)
Thanks man. I'm still trying to learn some sort of finger-style. I have been getting into finger picking the last few months. I thought finger "independence" was going to be a problem. It was until I read the standard notation. IMHO The nuances of phrasing are articulated much better in standard notation vice TAB. Moving bass lines are MUCH easier to grasp reading music(for me anyway).
@carvetop01 I'm doing good, just haven't had time to record and when I do the grandkids always want to be part of it. Life is good! Thanks for asking.
Allen, this is such a wonderful song and performance! Bravo! Your playing really moved me! There are far too much wars on earth, every day, every hour or even every second someone's dying. History should have learned us the lesson, no one wins a war. The sadness goes deep!
Thanks Al for sharing. It does bring to mind the high cost of war - a sad sound, but a beautiful song, and playing. Thanks for sharing. Very nice. Take care. Gwen
Beautiful, nothing wrong with this finger-style arrangement Allen, Mark sure has written some great pieces. You have made this tune sing in another way, just go on Allen you have already made great improvements in this relative difficult style, greetings Vic.
Thank you for your encouragement Victor. I have watched several of your finger-style arrangements. In particular I am trying to learn from your right hand technique. I notice your knuckles are parallel to the strings and your fingers are perpendicular. This feels unnatural to me but I see the wisdom in mastering this technique. Practice,practice......
k@carvetop01 I think the trick is keeping the 3 picking fingers very close to the strings so the movement is very small and effective without loosing too much unnecessary motion.I have learned this technique from Classical training in my younger years,my teacher was very strict that I learned this technique and it has paid off for me. I see many pupils who have learned a wrong technique and it's hard to quite these habits once learned, mostly their motion is too big so they're loosing time,Vic.
WELL MY FRIEND THIS IS A VERY EXCELLENT VERSION OF THIS GREAT SONG; I THINK ALSO THAT THIS MAY BE THE BEST SONG OF MK; BUT I AM NOT SURE IF I THINK OF SULTANS OF SWING; DOWN TO THE WATERLINE ETC; BUT ITS A HYMNE AGAINST WAR FOR THE REST OF TIME; VERY WONDERFUL
Hi Brother, today I just want to tell you that in this "Brothers in Arm" Version that you posted, make me feel your memories, your mood, and reflection about the war.
I think that You express Perfectly the feeling, a true and deep feeling when you play this tune.it' s clear that I feel When I hear you to play on this Video.
Bravo Mi Hermano, This video represent for me more than a simple good Guitar Performance. For me, it's a soulful moment very high.
Thank you so much for listening. Your comments are very kind. I'm just starting to work with the Alaska Piks. I have a Looong way to go. I do prefer them over other picks I have tried. You make them sound terrific. Maybe you could loan me your right hand for a bit??? :O)
Hey, bring on the guy who has trouble fingerpicking. He certainly isn't in evidence here. Man you played this with balance, dynamics, feeling .... Mark would dig it. Those finishing lines when the image of the ship returns... mercy. The whole thing just really makes it. Bravo!
There are so many memories(not all good) that are recalled to me through these lyrics. Knopfler sets the mood perfectly with his soulful playing. It was very difficult for me to express my feelings on the subject matter. Working on this helped me express those feelings.
Hi Allen, (for any strange reason) i'm not a great Mark Knopfler fan, but this fingerstyle version is great, excellent performed and a great delight to listen to. Very well done, Allen. Thanks for sharing this (maybe i should get a bit deeper in these Knopfler tunes?!)
@Mpoiuz Hi Uli, my good friend (in English;-): the same to me, I´m not a Knopfler or Dire Straits lover. We played "Sultans" and "Money for nothing" 1000times, and two others (I even have forgotten the title, though I can still play them). Knopfler sure is a great guitarist, we both know. My first Stratocaster had a 3-way switch, and Knopfler´s sound was new, the 2 pick-up combination we learned - remember?! But anyway, it´s an great part of the Rock history.
I first heard this song (too many years ago :O). I keep coming back to it. To my ears Mark created a perfect combination of lyrics and mood with his guitar. When I listen quietly to this song I can hear the sadness expressed through his instrument. The combination is quite poignant. That combination is also quite rare and when it happens it's magic.
@carvetop01 This really sounds complex.... When you are working out your chord shapes.... are you always aware of the next required chord.. or do you substitute until you are happy or maybe you work out the required chord by placing each note at a time ?
Always sounds full and,,,, correct which ever way :*)
This is a beautiful piece Allen and skillfully played. You should finger pick more often!! The melody does strike a balance between the sorrow of war and the victory of overcoming the battle. It is gentle, yet haunting as well. It is like how peace can also be bittersweet. Lord help us......Hugs.....Pamela
Hi Allen, a VERY nice video, interessting background story, and lovely sound. Good thoughts about war, winner and so called loosers. In the end the own family counts.
