  • Epiphone or Gibson LP? Great sound btw..

  • @Sirpwnalot4321 Epiphone. Thanks

  • Did you use 250k or 500k potentiometres?

  • @mattyxxy53 As far as I remember, 500k in both.

  • Comment removed

  • Did you use 250k or 500k potentiometres?

  • Lol, I just noticed you have a sai and nunchakus on your wall. What's that bamboo looking thing?

  • @TADahar Back from the hard core days of ass kickin' ;)

The bamboo thing is an African version of a rainstick a friend brought back from the continent. It's made with some kind of twigs, wrapped with braided nylon rope, and has pebbles inside. Authentic :)

  • great playing keep it up

  • Nice video, just the info I was searching for, thanks man!

  • my buddy has the vox amp the gain on them are so close to fuzz its sounds crazy..

  • I like your woody clean tone :)

  • nice

  • nice clean tone around 4:57! do you have any problems with unwanted noise and hum when using the pickup as single coil?

  • @smnewthtrblnmnd I wouldn't say there are any more problems than a typical single coil strat. But being as they are as close to single coil as a humbucker can get, you will get a bit of noise. Hasn't bothered me.

  • @MKlukowski Dziękuję serdecznie :)

Orderd some S.D. pickups last night, hope I they are going to be good.

  • @smnewthtrblnmnd Nie ma za co ;) I'm sure you'll like them. Which ones?

  • @MKlukowski Seymour Duncan SH 2N 4C

my humbuckers sound kind of muddy, I hope to have bright heights with the the pickups. I would choose real single coils but I am afraid of the unwanted noise, so I am trying to find something in the middle.

  • hey guy. you can put in different capacitors or different pots. You can also change the magnets (change the alnico II for an alnico V, alnico 8 or even a ceramic magnet - 5 bucks on ebay). You can get out-of-phase zeppelinesque sounds by flipping the magnet around - its called a peter green mod.

  • @MKlukowski Seymour Duncan offers an option to have those pickups with nickel covers. That would help a little with the minor noise, I think. But do you think that would change the sound a little?

  • @TADahar I don't really know. I can only imagine that some extra metal in between the string and the poles would do something, but I doubt that it would be significant. After all, then they wouldn't be exactly JB's, right? Best bet is to join the forum at SD and ask away. Lots of great people there.

  • @TADahar actually it does, it muddies it up a little bit.

  • i like them how much are they??

  • @holytrashcanboyz Best bet would be to head on over to the Duncan forums and find a dealer that can...give you a deal. Ebay is showing around 130 USD for the set.

  • @MKlukowski I bought them and I am verry happy whit them .

    Thanks man.

  • can i change my active pickups for them??

  • @passionguitar666 I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to.

  • the bass string sounds nice

  • Without a full tube amp please don't play distorted tones. It sounds too bad.

  • @jp6l6 Without a full understanding of what a video's intent is, please don't post comments you haven't thought through. It doesn't add to anything.

  • I like to roll the tone knob all the way down for the jazz p/u...has a nice warm sound really smooth and jazzy, gotta get down with the mother tone...too bright for my taste, but then again your using a vox so its naturally going to be bright and chimy, mneh

  • This video doesn't do these pickups any justice.

  • @KreigjohnsonA7X I think you missed the point of the video. It's to show the tonal range you can achieve with these two pick ups while coil splitting them. If you're looking for high quality audio samples of screaming guitar solos on a JB...you really shouldn't be looking at youtube.

  • @MKlukowski

    why not ?

i can show clean examples of this, your clip aint to bad for quality it cold be better, but thats up to you to learn how to mic a cab or amp and then set it all out the right way, getting all your levels right as if you serve up mud, then mud it will remain.

no offence, but when you understand what i am saying, you will approach it a little bit differently other then what iam saying your clip is very informative.

  • my spelling does suck so it should have been could rather then cold hmmm

  • the amp distortion sounds a little tinny as well, other then this its fine, could you have just ran a decent dirt pedal over the clean chan and early boss od1 or tube screamer od 808 blues driver or the likes?

  • @hq72hotmale I don't have those pedals (at least not yet ;) ) But then the purpose of the video would have changed a bit. But at least this way you get to hear raw sound 'changes'.

  • He just does the same soils!!!!!!!!!!

  • @vittor208 Soils?

  • @MKlukowski hey man, tell me something, is the duncan jazz model better than the dimarzio paf?

  • @SchelluS Hey, unfortunately I can't answer that question for two reasons: 1. It all depends on taste 2. I have no experience with Dimarzio.

Best bet would to check out SD's forum, or even Dimarzio's for some info. I'm sure some members have experience with both.

  • The great sound is only for the pickups not for the guitar..

  • @cicalone70 Care to elaborate?

  • sound much more clean than classic 57

  • @gneeba True, I have a pair of classic 57's in a Sheraton II. They're dirtier, but in a nice way

  • Pretty cool.. thanks. Sounds really good for not a lot of money in gear either.

  • @jwahh It's quite an alright set up.

  • I have an exactly same guitar and i just order those pickups :D

  • I just installed a SH-2n and Custom 5, another great combo. the jazz in the neck gave me so much more range. I also split mine, the custom 5 holds up on its when its split, but the split jazz sounded pretty thin, although it did serve a good sound for distorted slide.

    Great demo man.

  • @dmo024 Thanks. I like the jazz split (and sometimes add a bit from the JB, but ever so slightly) but I need to give it more low end/mid and cut the highs to get it where I like it.

  • what tuners are those?

  • @oilersandguitars Stock Epiphone, kluson I believe? They hold tune pretty well. I just got an Epi Sheraton II not too long ago with Grovers though.

  • I liked this. nice riffyou have there.

  • how good is the harmonic repsonse on the sh4 jb?

  • @theboywhocantollie Hmmm, good question. I find that it does well with a bit of heavy distortion. But I'm not too keen on the cleans unless it's split and I'm going for a country kinda feeling.

  • @theboywhocantollie, it's okay but if you want some killer harmonics look at the Bare Knuckle Pickups Nailbomb, nothing I've ever played beats that. The Rebel Yell is fantastic too!

  • awesome pickups!!!

    sounds killer

5 stars for you for owning a pair of nunchucks!

  • @EvoPogo Lol, thanks! ;)

  • Vox amps SUCK distorted. Just use overdrive effect pedals instead. I only like the tone of the SH-2N. The SH-4 sounds bad, or at least you made it sound bad.

  • I use a vox vt30 and it has great distortion within the 22 model amps...

  • If this is solid state, this set will sound just amazing through a Vox Vt 30!

  • Damn right!

  • Amen brother!

  • the vt is a hybrid :S would sound better through an AC30.

not insulting the VT30 i have one of them too :) i like vox's aha

  • I know. But a Hybrid is better than just plain solid.

  • would it be possible to put a SH-2N Jazz pickup in the neck and an 81-X EMG pickup (or any kind of active pickup?)

  • 81-X EMG in the bridge*

  • That's actually an interesting question. I don't see why it shouldn't work, your question might be answered better on the Seymour Duncan Forums

  • ah, thank you sir, i'm hoping it does work, because i'm a fan of the distortion a good EMG can give you, but i'm no stranger to some jazz improv...

  • yes but be it awkward...

  • How is JB with overdrive?

  • JB sound wonderful with overdrive.

  • Ya damn right ;)

  • Love the little jazzy licks!

  • Ok i have an important question please help me. I want to buy a jackson rr5 and the one i'm looking at has JB SH4 Humbucking Pickup (bridge) and Jazz SH2N (neck) combo like in this video. I wonder if it is good for real metal like playing Metallica or even like Bullet for my valentine???

  • Simply, the JB will get you into that territoy. The Jazz won't.

You can always buy the guitar, and swap the Jazz with someone for something like a Dimbucker.

Keep in mind, your amp will do a great deal of sound as well. Make sure you dialing in the right settings.

  • Thanks for your reply and what you said about amps is true indeed.

  • dave mustaine from megadeth used this combo for 14 years and gave him the iconic tone he has. And BFMV isnt metal lmao.

  • :P bfmv is metal to me, at least some kind of metal, well metalcore actually, and thanks for the reply about the mics.

  • yeah, as long as you have 10 - 52 strings, you will get a very nice sound out of the jazz believe it or not.

  • i bought these pickups today cant wait till there installed

  • Awesome Vid.

Would you recommend getting the SH 4 JB, with the SH-1N 59' in the neck?

    Thanks for you reply.

  • Hellz yeah! ;) A lot of people actually recommend that setup as well and even go so far as to say that it complements the JB better than the SH2. I still have to experiment a bit, my 59 is on a shelf at the moment.

  • Thanks alot,

I know what i'm saving up for =D

  • Hi Man, I am getting a Gibson SG Standard and i want to get that Slash, Jimmy Page like neck pickup tone, should i get the SH-2 jazz or the SH-1n-4C '59? For the bridge i am getting a Bill lawrence L500XL

  • Hmmm, as far as I know, you should go the Alnico II Pro route. Not saying you can't get close with the ones you suggested though.

  • I thought the same thing, I got another option of puting the Alnico II pro in neck and Angus Young in Bridge

  • Great Review, Im Gonna Get Some Of These, can you tab out that riff thing you start at 5:01 you do it before but im up to that part, Thanks.

  • Sure. Just give me a bit of time.

  • sounds pretty damn good that very acoustic like i think..are those pathfinder amps solid state??

  • All solid state baby! ;)

But truth be told, they are very good solid state little amps.

  • no doubt ive had solid state amps but now im wanting to move onto valve amps for the warmth you get plus the better soiunding overdrive i think of solid state overdrive as far too bright they usaly sound good clean but rubbish overdriven..

  • It's question of taste and please don't be upset but to me your solid state distortion I immediately heard kills your good pickups. I have to say I'm a little bit purist and I like working in tube amps so that my ears use to hear something completely different as distortions.

  • Of course, you're completely right. It is a matter of taste. But sometimes you gotta work with what you got ;)

  • Boring

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it. In fact, your comment has changed my life.

  • Dave Mustaine uses these

  • Awesome vid 5/5! Could you answer a question though? Sound wise cover no cover on pups whats the difference?

  • Hey, thanks. As far as I know, the pup cover produces very little effect on the sound. What it might do is increase the distance the poles are from the strings because of the thickness as well as offer a bit more shielding from other electrical sources (ie; possibly less hum)

  • FIVE STARS!!!!!!! Thank you so much, this is THE best demonstration I have found of the sound of the SD Jazz pup. I have an Epi LP Custom as well, and I intended on putting the Jazz in the neck, and now I am very sure of that decision. Thanks again, and great playing

  • you should put on some chrome covers, i think it'll look better

  • btw.... it is spelled... DemonstRation

  • Comment removed

  • Ooh. Good catch. You're sharp. Had to change the title because of you ;)

  • why do you swear in the very beginning???

  • Comment removed

  • Mind pointing out the minute:second that happens?

  • you have problems with rythme!!

  • you have problems with spelling

  • lol ;)

  • @corbantheband And rhythm, but doesn't stop me ;)

  • @MKlukowski Randy Rhoads used Seymour Duncan Jazz

  • Fantastic comment. In fact, you should get a prize. Shame I don't have any to give out.

  • hi MKlukowski,

your video helped me a lot, i also play those pu's (hot rodded set) in my epiphone wilshire limited edition... it doesn't sound like a wilshire, but in a way really really nice!

  • i have the same amp. real treasure for only 60€. love it.

  • whats that first riff u play?

  • I'm thinking it's Knocking on Heaven's Door. G D C

  • Is it me or your strings sound dead?

  • Could be anything. I think I had new strings put on. Could be the amp, the songs, the fact that I'm just strumming basic stuff, no reverb.

Or it could just be you ;)

  • must be the non-reverb sound haha i donty even remember how sound my guitar/ amp without reverb haha

  • Excellent choice putting those seymours in an epiphone les paul, i think they really wake up the guitar..they sound better then any guitar i've played within the prices range, just needs a little "tweaking" with the pickups =]

  • pretty decent sounding..is that a solid state amp?

  • Yup solid state. All 10 watts ;)

  • How does the JB sound in the neck position? Any good?

  • depends what you like, dude. It has high output, so many people prefer it in the bridge. A lead guitarist may want a high output pickup in the neck of thier guitar, Kirk Hammet has an EMG 81 in the bridge and neck of his guitars, which are both about as high output as you can get.

Typically though, the more high output that a pickup is, means that it can be less clear and "defined."

Try it and see, it could be what you are looking for, only your ears can answer that question.

  • was your control cavity all messy when you replaced them cuz my epiphone was super messy

  • Yes, it looked like a hack-job in there.

  • were you able to change the pickups in it?

  • yes...I also changed all of the pots and capacitors, and a lot of the wire.

You can hear them in this same exact guitar on my channel in my Sweet child of mine intro video. I like the sounds that I can get out of them.

In the video, I am using my line 6 toneport and playing through my computer speakers, and simply recording audio and video at the same time using my nikkon coolpix camera on video mode.

  • how much did that cost cuz i'm not that sure i can do iton my own. but i'm pretty sure i could change the pickups but i just need some guidance.

  • The pickups cost $129 for both of them together at guitar center. It's not that difficult once you learn to solder.

Google it, dude. There are tons of "how-to videos" out there. A diagram comes with the pickups on where to connect the wires.

  • thanks. my dad knows how to solder and i can follow the diagram easily but i was talking about the pots and stuff lol

  • They are just as easy, bro. When I started doing mods like that I would take one wire off, and immediately put in the new pot. Then move to the next one and so on...

  • hmm... sounds easy but not safe for an idiot like me.. how much was it for the new pots and stuff?

  • I recommend either CTS or gibson pots (500k), short-shaft (if they are going into an epiphone), and they are like $8 a piece.

The tone pots are the same as the volume pots; you solder a capacitor onto each one that is going to be a tone pot.

The schematic from Seymour Duncan will show you all of that. The capacitors in there now will work, but it wouldnt' hurt to buy new ones; they are very cheap.

Seymour Duncan recommends 0.47uf for their Humbuckers.

    It's easier that it sounds...

  • ok..how much are the capcitators

  • like 50 cents, I think...

  • ok.. i went back into my cavity but then there are like a million wires soldered to each pot and i don't even have a wire color code so i'm really pissed.

  • go to my channel, dude.

Go to my sweet child of mine intro video with this guitar and pickups and comment there, and I will walk you through the install if you want. It really is easier than it looks like.

I may even do a tutorial video that walks you through the whole process.

  • make sure he uses the right kind of solder though

  • what kind of solder do i need?

  • I just installed a Seymour Duncan JB last night. I used clear flux. I hate using it because it takes forever to get hot enough to melt...often, I find myself melting the insulation on the wire before it gets hot enough to melt the solder into the wire. Even so...that's the solder that is used on my guitar, already, so I wanted to make sure I match it to get the most efficient connection that I could

  • and what power solderin iron do i need?

  • just about any soldering iron will work, as long as it will melt the solder. you need electrical solder..its called flux core. its hollow and filled with a detergent type stuff (flux) that prevents oxidation which can ruin the electrical connection.

  • Irons basically differ in their power. Same temperature in general, they just don't cool down as quick.

  • Ha, I have the same exact guitar, man! Same pickups too, I installed them today.

I put 0.22 capacitors on the tone pots for now. I may try some higher rated ones (or at least on the neck pickup) next time I change strings though. It sounds a just little bit on the bright side, but you can roll back the tone knob to cut it out.

Sounds great, nice demo too! You should have uesd your marshall though. :)

  • I didn't have the Marshall when I did the demo unfortunately.

  • well since everyones argueing about amps i think ill put my piece in :)

Vox= AMAZING CLEANS...not really impressive dirty sounds though

Line 6 = some are pretty decent, some are CRAP

Marshall= pretty good cleans, amazing dirty :)

  • Peavey=everything perfect!

  • lol

I tried a few Peavey's, they did the job, but nothing spectacular.

As for Sighcottic's comment, I have to kinda agree. Where would you put Fender in that case?

  • i agree about peavey amps, but the 5150 is awesome.

  • not all marshall man

all manufactures make at least a few shit box amps and marshall is one of the reining champs

  • well yeah, theres hardly any companies dont dont make shitty versions of better products, im talking about like in general though

  • lovin that jazz pickup!

  • No worries, still at the day job ;)

  • the two tunes you played are stuck in my head..

  • Love the clean sound but I can't agree that it sounds great when played dirty. I kinda dig those Seth Lover Seymour Duncans much better but it's all a matter of taster. Cool video dude.

  • I have that Pathfinder. A VERY good amp for practicing. Very warm cleans.

  • hey man im thinking of getting the same pickups for my les paul classic. the JB for bridge and SH-2N Jazz model for neck.

would i have to get different pots to make the pickups sound better? and do these pickups sound clear when loud and with distortion?

thanks man help would be appreciated.

  • Nope, same pots will work. Yes they will sound clear when loud and with or even without distortion, but also remember that the amplifier you go through has a big part to play and some break up differently. They will definately sound cleaner on a Fender than a Marshall for example.

  • I like that tritone subin jazz! :)

  • hey, nice les paul custom, i have an epi standard les paul plus, i also bought the same pickup set to mod mien, just never got around to it yet, i cant wait now that ive seen what yours sounds like. i also didnt know that i could have it split coiled like that, thats pretty cool. so what year model is yuor custom, i havent seen that color availible for epiphones. or is it a special edition?

  • Hey. The exact official name of it is something like Epiphone Les Paul Custom Flame Top Plus. It was most likely made in the Unsung Plant, Korea in February 2002. I think they discontinued the line now. Great guitar.

  • Would the JB pickup be a good neck (not bridge, because people usually put it there) pickup for clean jazz tones, or would it be too muddy/distorted? Thanks. I'm thinking of putting a SD Super Distortion in the bridge of my Epiphone Les Paul Custom.

  • In my opinion, no. I think it sounds a little twangy for jazz, maybe too much treble and not enough of that 'soothing jazz tone' people associate jazz with.

  • why did you said the Queen thing Brian may uses a Wall of Vox Ac30 all modified..... and those are tube amp... with no digital effects and his sound is amazin!! i have currently a hor tod deluxe (with tungsram tube, RCA power Tubes, and a celestion vintage 30) thatas my home amp... and for gigs i have a fender super sonic.. with better tubes... and a Marshall JVM410h half Stack and believe me... ive tried the line 6 and for the money there is a lot of better amps
  • Look up the Deacy.

Also realize that you're speaking from the player's side and your opinion is also heavily weighted because not only is your ear more biased but your fingers also feel the response differently.

Sound is subjective, so technically anything could make that "sound you seek".

Tube is great, but is not the answer to all (but I personally would go tube ;) )

  • i agree for distortion you need a new amp or maybe a pedal. but the clean is beautiful. my first amp when i first started playing was a $50 fender amp. beautiful clean, horrible overdrive lol. now I have $1000 line 6 lol

  • i hate line 6... try a real tube amp

  • I have a Marshal TSL601 currently with some JJ's in it. Turned up, it sounds fantastic.

Line 6 is awesome as well. You should never make generalized statements cuz you never know what you could be listening to. Take for example Queen's Brian May.

  • That's very true. Vox are very good amps.

  • I use Line 6, good effects but as the guy says below tube amps are nicer if you have the room to blast out your tunes, but you can get Tube Line 6 amps... but back to this amp, yehh i don't like VOX amps what so ever, my guitar teacher used to have one and everything i played on it sounded crap until he got a Marshall and just by 'chance' my playing sounded so much cleaner and more fluent as it is with the Line 6 at home
