@Iwillcheckit2010 not a lot of drivers sustain heavy or lethal injuries because of the so called safe-cage (or smthin). Although the cars get all screwed up the drivers stay safe. It's been some years since a f1 pilot died. And another heavy injury was sustained by frederic assa (well he got a big piece of metal to the head)

The last person to die was Senna in '94. It's a sad story. Ratzenberger died the day before in a qualifying accident, and it made Senna talk of retirement. The drivers banded together to improve car safety and Senna lead the group, as he was the most experienced.

The following race day Senna lost control and hit a concrete wall almost head on at 135mph. The front tyre swung round and hit his helmet causing fatal trauma.

@usernameL1 They got rid of traction control. And they limited the aerodynamic profile of the cars. Didnt you see the 2010 Australian Grand Prix. Their was at least five crashes. The best was when Kobayashi's front wing fell off and he slammed into two other cars. Its still a great racing series, much better then NASCAR.

@AndrewWang1234: Haven't you seen that race!? I'm 15 and I was watching with my dad. The Ferrari had some engine trouble. The yellow Jordan noticed that and went around the Ferrari. But the Sauber (I believe) was accelerating and didn't notice it. So it crashed right into the Ferrari.

The cockpit doesnt, the rest does. The cockpit shouldn't ever break - It's designed to keep the driver safe.

The rest of the car is designed for speed so its made of light material.

In the newer cars that's actually meant to happen. The cockpits of F1 cars are nigh on indestructible., but pretty much all of the car that doesn't have driver in it is designed to be a crumple zone.

Sucks for the car but it absorbs a lot of impact force that would otherwise end up going through the driver.
