  • "the public have their own mind" (Y)

  • <3 freddies brown eyes

  • was this just on NZ TV or did they actually come to NZ?

  • @singningwongho Queen did perform in New Zealand. They performed in Auckland, NZ on April 13, 1985 at the Mount Smart Stadium.

  • freddie has a strong Indian accent :p

  • @DrHaZyM i wasn't watching the screen at the moment he started speaking, but as soon as i heard it i knew it was him. it makes me wonder about the life he had growing up.

  • I think queen is a very talented band and are one of my faves because their music is so interesting and unique. However, my number one fave band is ofcourse the Beatles, because I find their music even better and I also think they are a lot more talented. I mean, look at paul McCartney who is about 70 and yet he still does concerts and tours around the world. I just think the Beatles made this whole revoloution of music and without them I think that many bands wouldnt have made it

  • 1:36 LOL guy standing by a random freaking latter

that scared the shit out of me. freddies talking nice and peaceful and then bam!

  • aw i love freddie at the end when he is talking about money and the problems it brings

shows how real and down to earth he is. always assumed that he was a person who lavished his lifestyle and wealth but in this interview hes so genuine and normal and instead of behaving like your typical big headed celeb bragging about his fortune he is speaking the truth and warning the world about how un-glam the celeb world can be. bless. loved how real he was, he never held back from anything...

  • they are all awesome!! from Roger, to John, Freddie and Brian....Queen we still love you!!!!!

  • I will forever be thanking my dad for playing Queen throughout my childhood. If it weren't for him, I probably would've never loved them as much as I do. I was born 4 years after Freddie died, and it saddens me that I will never get to see this amazing man live. RIP Freddie, and Happy Birthday. <3

  • Love queen! And John! Also happy birthday Freddie!

  • the best group ever

  • john dosent say anything he sits there smoking

  • i remember those old days with the news line up of John and Judy, trying to speak "proper english" hahaha

  • johns just sitting there

  • Just like Gaga, alot of the press here dont look beyond the glitz and glam, red lipstick and wigs, they just judge her straight away and presume things like she has not talent, like they did with queen. gaga is really quite an extraordinary talent and I do see beyond the wigs. when she sits down and belts out on the piano it takes my breath away. lets hope the press down take down gaga xx

  • "You can't be good businessmen and make crap music"

    Just ask Simon Cowell.......

  • dont you mean good music

  • RIP FREDDIE

  • @MrNotyag Freddie did speak the truth. He said you can be happy in certain areas. He is talking about being wealthy & successful in the music business.

  • critics are such scum, spend their life trying to bring down successful people, how miserable and pathetic is that?

  • Is that a lisp or an accent?

  • I still don't understand why our SEXY Roger has sunglasses in so many interviews.. when he has so beautiful eyes ^^

  • lol the guy interviewing them looks so out of place and unprofessional - mismatching outfit and interviews them standing up whilst holding onto a ladder lol

  • Nothing could change my mind about how amazing Queen was!!! Damn, If I was alive back then I would have been soo mad hearing the shit they said about Queen!

  • you can't have good management & bad music...oh but freddie it's happened now!

  • they were great musicians and innovators brought in a new style for other bands--ie the new york dolls and a lot of other big hair bands--but when you are in the spotlight press scrutinizes you-- so if you blow your nose at a live concert then you must have some type of infection--or drug problem-- then your lifestyle is questioned

  • "grizzly gruesome garbage that some felt had started to dominate music" in the 70s? If only they'd seen then what music would be like today.

  • @fairyfellermaster They had seen it. That's why Roger Taylor recently said that he doesn't listen to today's music. Haha!

And I don't understand why some stupid reporters ask rock legends about that Bieber kid. They asked Brian May about Bieber and he said that he didn't know anything about him. :)

  • I just realized 45 seconds in that I haven't been listening to the guy talking but rather to Somebody To Love playing in the background.

  • Why does all the good guys die? How come Freddie and Dio is dead by now but Lemmy Kilmister and Axl Rose is still alive? Don't misunderstand me, I love all those artists.

  • Roger you theif...stealing deaky's cig's!!!

Glad they aren't smoking now -_-

  • "Wealth brings a lot of problems." I'd like to find that out for myself!

In any case, gotta respect how Queen had every angle of the music business covered. That's indeed what it takes to do what they did.

  • didnt know john deacon smoked. interesting. and i can never get bored of hearing their voices.

  • i have to agree with freddie whole heartedly when there is money involved it certainly comes at a cost and money doesnt make you happy..sure it buys nice clothes n materialistic things but true happiness has to come from deep within and i guess in the end freddie paid the ultimate price trying to find his happiness no money in the world could have saved OUR freddie we love and miss you dearly RIP freddie x0x0x0

  • hahahahahha LOL I love Deaky and Roger! They are soooo cute!

  • luv queen

gettin 3 disc album for crimbo

  • that journalist wanted to be aswered: yes, the press has been very helpful.

but it is not like that, they said many times that sensationalist press wanted to show other image of them and press like rolling stones just wanted to critizise in a evil way

  • smoking in such places is not allowed anymore lol

  • Freddie was absolutely right when he pointed out that no matter what journalists said, the public liked Queens music and still bought the records. No amount of spite from the journalists changed the fans minds, the music was all.

  • Way to open fire at the fickle and vicious media! Trying to sell sensationalized diversions and hoping to burden the heart of expression. -Um

please don't ever take me to court Queen.

  • his teeth are kinda big for his mouth but he was a sexy man

  • Uch! Freddie should never have hidden those gorgeous lips under that caterpillar!

  • :20- "Shut up old man, I can't hear the song!"

47: "Turn off the music, I can't hear Brian!"

Oh, how quickly I change my mind...

  • What really annoys me is the press support nowadays of the useless drivel that is churned out on these utterly stupid talent shows. if Queen had the press behind them instead of against them, they would undoubtedly be the biggest band the planet has ever seen. 4 genius musicians. 4 extremely intelligent people and4astute business man. When does that ever happen in a rock band. Queen quite simply should have blown away the Beatles as they have more talent. Queen do and will always rule.

  • @dinger454 The Beatles had the media behind them plus they didn't tour like Queen did. The Beatles were able to produce more records because they toured less. I like the Beatles but I agree, Queen were definitely more talented.

What makes me mad is when I hear the same people mentioned when talking about greatness. If you combine voice, stage presence and songwriting, Freddie beats Elvis, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. And Freddie definitely beats anyone today.

  • Comment removed

  • @cortadew I respect your opinion. The word "musician" covers such a wide range. IMO Freddie & Elvis had the best voices in music, great quality vocals. But Elvis did not write songs.

Even though Michael, Paul & John wrote classics (mainly Paul & John), they did not have great quality vocals.

Freddie had a great quality voice & he solely wrote many classics. Not only did he write the lyrics but also the music to accompany the lyrics.

  • @Yo1969Yo well the people you refer to had different history in music they sang different styles and had different views of life.

They were all masters of their game but for me and i think for very many people a totally different game for each and every one of them.

Can't compare a glorious glam rocker with a pop king a rock'n'roll king or two rock pioneers, it just doesn't work that way.

Great musicians all of them and their music will live on forever.

  • @Yo1969Yo To be fair though Bohemian Rhapsody has been declared the best song ever written, by most of the musical world and this must say a lot about Freddie and his gang.

  • @dinger454 Your almost correct. Queen is the second best band in the history of music, behind the Beatles. John Lennon is the greatest songwriter ever, and Freddie is one step behind him, but in front of Paul M. and George H.

  • @theunknowncove the beatles were never a huge stadium band like queen. Greatest hits album outsold sgt pepper, queen most bootlegged band ever, Only group each member had more than 1 number 1 , check out wikipedia the list goes on queen were and are bigger than the Beatles, its only the press that would have you think otherwise.

  • @dinger454 right on!

  • @dinger454 I agree, I like and respect the Beatles BUT Freddie Mercury / Queen outsides them. It is my understanding when the Beatles did do concerts they couldnt even hear themselfs or each other. With Queen Freddie OWNED US. . Also with Queen each member was allowed to show case thier talents be it songwritting or musical ability, John and Paul HOGGED the songs so we dont really have a fair idea how good George was early on . Plus I seen Freddie / Q ueen so I KNOW Freddie owned us,

  • i honestly never liked the beatles, their songs never moved me or i didnt get it plus they were incredibly arrogant, queen was always humble and didnt take themselves too seriously

  • @BananaSandwich1 I was very young when the Beatles were BIG and a teenager when Queen / Freddie were BIG so I respect both bands BUT Queen certianly Fredie could sing differant STYLES of music beatifuly and I agree up to the end Queen / Freddie stayed ratter humble. Both bands have a place in music history but Freddie was sooooooooooo amazeing...Can you tell I prefere Freddie

  • @LadyKatherine1960 i would do anything for freddie. . .seriously

  • @BananaSandwich1 Freddie IS the KING of Queen. An amazeing talent, I love him too

  • @theunknowncove Bit of a stretch to call Lennon the greatest songwriter ever, unless you're talking just rock music. Within Queen, I think Brian was a better songwriter than Freddie.

  • Freddie is just way to entertaining. Suppose that's why I will revisit interviews over and over. Hi every one I am a Freddie Mercury addict.

  • wonderfull interview, honesty thee facts of life thanks buddy

  • New Zealand had TV in 1985...? ;)

  • @anguscole2. Funny enough we did. And roads too. And even electricity. But then again considering that we also gave the world atomic energy in an indirect way that goes without saying, Umm. let me see what else did we give the world. Ah yes. Silicon valley probably also indirectly owes its existence to a New Zealander. One that discovered silicon as a conductor of electricity. Poor old New Zealand huh

  • @anguscole2 Just as well there would have been no video other wise. Judie Bailey and John Hawksby were the news readers :)

  • @anguscole2 We got TV in the 1960s...

  • @anguscole2 LOL

  • they are the greatest band ever.

  • Heavenly music and their stage presence, Don't know, can you say EYE CANDY

  • They really were very hardworking...You tell em Freddie...and btw Freddie, YOU"RE STILL MY CHAMPION!!!!

  • The press are still arseholes in UK! They say the Brits build folk up to knock em down,RUBBISH!That is the tabloids, not the public.I feel sorry for N Zealanders cuz theyre so far away from everyone they prob'' dont get so many good bands calling!

    God save the QUEEN(the band I mean,lol.)D:)

  • @XxpauldadudexX Press have always been arseholes in UK. Always will be. Don't feel sorry for kiwis. They live in one of the most beautiful and well preserved countries in the world. Their standard of living ranks higher than in the UK. Kiwis are generally happier than Brits all round. And look at their film industry.

  • @philster61 first you dont understand the most important point-being happy is a choice just because you are english or a new zelander or african doesnt mean you are " happier" or not.

  • Pity we don't have a time machine so we could go back to hang with these awesome men

  • Wonderful interview. Freddie was so sensible in the way he answered questions.

  • QUEEN FOREVER!

  • yeah that goes to show you what unhappiness can do to you even if you're rich. You look for happiness in other places with no reguard to the dangers of it or knowing the dangers but searching for it is so strong it kills you.

  • 0:05-0:13 she is really beutiful!

  • @jokersbonus Yes, in an 80's way. I bet she has amazing legs.

  • more money more problems they say, hmm still its better than having problems and no money :)

  • I feel so bad for Brian here - everyone else is smoking. Notice how he keeps his head down for a majority of the time (probably to prevent himself from inhaling the smoke...who knows). Anyone else agree?

But I'll be honest, it was cute to see Roger take John's cigs. =P

And even though the press constantly made harsh comments about them, they still stood strong. Well done, boys. :)

  • @NScole6407 No, he's not preventing himself from the smoke :) That's Brian - he was the only non-smoker in the band and he got used to live with another 3 smokers :)

  • I remember them coming to NZ. I kick myself to this day for not going to their concert. I had a friend who had a ticket and lost it!!!

  • Ha Ha Ha! Brian was eyeing Freddie's cig.

  • Brian doesn't smoke because his dad was a long- time smoker so he hates the smeel of the smoke.

  • I always thought that the rock press back then, still leaning somewhat towards anti-establishment rock, saw Queen as corporate from early on and held them to the fire for it. They did use the corporate approach at a time when it wasn't cool. They were, after all, the first rock band whose members were the highest paid CEO's of their own company. I think they got in Guiness Book of World Records for that.

  • I think when Queen is interviewed, either singly or grouped, their defensiveness is justified, because since they've been such a powerhouse the media and the public have always criticized them and had them under their proverbial thumb. People are always going to dislike something new/or what they can't understand. I think some band interviews which can be found here on you tube, the media likes to push them, and prod them into questions that don't have one answer. Queen Rocks, no question!

  • Every one smokes.....but Brian!!!

  • In the interviews Queen seem a bit grumpy, which is a bit of a shame. They are still an awesome and legendary band though!

  • there are most probably grumpy because they are nackered after just coming off stage and touring does take its toll.

  • he is not drunk. it's really not the Freddie style to speak drunk.

  • look at the Heinekens he has killed!

  • some intelligent drunk...

  • Absolutely adorable!

  • Hahahahaha, at 2:35 Roger steals one of John's cigerettes!

  • freddie sounds so posh! ...unexpected :P QUEEN FTW

  • Lmao, you can just tell that the clips of that guy at 1:38 were edited into the interview later on. xD

  • wow, ive never seen john and roger smoking cigerettes in an interview before, normally its just freddie haha, Queen and Freddie forever!

  • Freddie and the band seem very forthright, honest, and geniune in this interview....yea, Brian seems bored, but maybe shyness??...not sure of the source, but I read where Freddie was aware he was HIV positive 6 years before his death.

  • @MyaPapaya74 Freddie found out he had Aids just after Easter 1987 and died Nov. 24, 1991 so he knew and lived with Aids 4 and a half years before he died

  • @MsLadyRobin Hey I was just wondering how it's known for sure that he found out around Easter of 1987. I read Mercury and Me by Jim Hutton and I can't remember if this was in the book. I'll have to check that out. And I am sooo curious about what it was like to see them play at Live Aide. It's so cool that you saw them live!!

  • @Reyanne2 Brain May told it in a couple interviews, I think Mary Austin did too but I KNOW Brain did . I cant help you with the books, I have and will never read them. Freddie / Queen in concert was mind blowing amazeing. What you see on tape is spot on except we felt the POWER first hand....can you say religious exsperiance.

  • :09 would totally rail that all day

  • I wonder if he was HIV in this interview

  • dont think so, it was around 87

  • it was 86

  • john and judy look so young....

  • Queen rocks!

Freddie sounds like he didn't sleep all night :)

  • freddie didnt always used to sound like that. at home when he was happy or excited hed go very high pitched and scream at me! yes, roger did that ALOT. Bastard nicked a whole packet of mine once, and when i couldnt find them i asked freddie where they were and he simply replied, "oh they were on the counter... until roger took them off and smoked one." so i asked roger about it. "Oh i finished them, i'll get you more i promise." and thankfully, he did, the little sweetheart.

  • what? are u on p?

  • what am i on? nothing! haha! gosh dear, what a question!

  • I agree. I love their accent !

    greetings from Argentina

  • This is actually a really good interview. They all seem relaxed, and the questions were actually interesting!

  • i love their accent!!!

  • Wow, never expected Freddie's normal speaking voice to sound like this.

  • he sound wierd as shit and diffrent but fuckin awsome

  • Haha did Roger just take one of John's cigs without asking, or do they share packets?

    They are all so cute.

  • i think freddie and roger were the stronger half in queen. just a thought

  • I would say Freddie and Brian actually, but they are all awesome.

  • yeah he did take his cig without asking because he was checking his pockets first LOL that's soooo cute! thanks I didn't notice this

  • Yeah it's basically:

    *Sees John smoking*

    *Checks self for cigs*

Damn, I can't find my cigs

    Ah well...

    *Takes John's*

    Sooo cute.

  • BilliePiperFan82, you're sooo right.

Roger's very cute. And John seems to not care. A real friend:))))

  • @BilliePiperFan82 Haha, I haven't noticed this by the first time, but I watched it again and it's so funny xD

  • @BilliePiperFan82 Or, that's Roger's, and when John takes one, he notices that!

  • @BilliePiperFan82

they all quit a long time ago, smoking is not cool, it's crap

    queen rocks

  • cool, I didn't know Freddy was so honest too.

  • I just don't get why the press was also so vehement about Queen. Even if you don't like the sound of it, you MUSt see the craftmanship of it.. Or are songs with more than 4 different chords too difficult to some people???

  • hmm...I reckon it was a two-way thing. Some of the press were very vitriolic about Queen's debut and about Queen II and neither really deserved criticism such as the infamous 'stale bucket of urine' quote from the NME. But, on balance, Queen got no more or less criticism than any experimental new band starting out at the time. It seemed as though they took comments rather more to heart and became very anti-press very early on.

  • cont from above:

At best, Brian and Roger dutifully gave interviews which were occasionally interesting and insightful; at worst all members of Queen could be come across as cagey, self-absorbed and even downright rude *note I said 'came across' and not 'were', despite my criticisms I still love 'em. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. The press insulted Queen, perhaps unduly so, Queen insulted the press, again maybe unduly so, and the vicious circle continued until Freddie's deah.

  • Actually, it began with the press, constantly jabbing at Queen, tearing them apart. They were so brutal, Queen Had to be defensive & on guard. Queen had to fight for everything but the press never gave them a chance, while eating up every piece of crap from the Beatles.

It was the press who couldn't look beyond the glitz to listen to the awesome, eclectic music. They were too stupid to recognize Queen's genius.

BTW, these are 4 of the nicest, most decent guys ever!!!

    FREDDIE FOREVER!!!!

  • I take your point (especially as you say 'eating up every piece of crap from the Beatles' I doff my cap to you :)) Queen were unduly insulted in terms of the quality of music they were producing for such a young band. But at the same time music that challenging and, yes, wonderful, is going to be criticised somewhere along the line and Queen should not have been just quite so hyper-sensitive about it, refusing to do interviews unless absolutely necessary and so on.

  • I'm not sure why they got off to a rocky start, but looking back and reading a few reviews, one can certainly side with Queen in their repugnance at the press, consequently their refusal to deal with them. They were scathing! So unkind - It was always an uphill battle for Queen, so, in the end, they relied on their fans to speak for them.

America missed out on them due to lack of airtime. I 'discovered' them a yr. ago, thank God! Had they had more exposure, I would've loved them 38 yrs. ago!!

  • You're right when you wrote that America missed out on them due to lack of airtime. I've been following Queen since the mid '70's or have tried too. It was very difficult because back in the '70s there was no youtube, no internet, no cable, there was nothing but only radio. And my town's radio stations hardly ever played Queen. I couldn't get any information on them. It pissed me off because I loved Freddie's voice and I thought Roger was the cutest guy. :)

    So thank God for youtube.

  • @FREDDIEKINGOFQUEEN Your right , as an American army brat, I lived in England when Queen hit it big in the 1970 s, then dad transfered then back to England in the 1980 s. And it was the press who were mean sprited and brutal . No disrespect to the BEATLES , they were good but at thier concernts girls screamed, at Queen s concerts Queen ruled and us fans were thier royal subjects, that s why Freddie had the whole crownd singing

  • Wow. First time I've seen this. I went to their concert here in New Zealand. I was near the front too.

  • @ianfromNZ I was at two of thier concerts, Plus Live Aide...not a Queen concert but they stoled the crowd, they already had me captured, sightttttttttttttttttttttttttt/ I will always be in love with Freddie but they were all talented

  • "you can't be a great businessman and make crap music!"

lol damn how i wish that wasn't true. He'd be shocked to see what's going on now.

  • you can hear he has an odd voice because of his teeth, i guess his singing was so perfect and the sound was beautiful and let him put himself across in a beautiful way

  • lol Brian May is the only non smoker I guess.

  • Yes he is....you can just tell by his body language that he is disgusted by smoke. On his website, he writes a lot of information about petitioning to ban smoking in resturants (in England)!!!!

  • urr...it is illegal to smoke in restaurants in england

  • If so, I didn't know (I'm an American), but Brian May is extremely opposed to smoking period.

  • how long did Queen stay in our country for??

  • I am a huge Queen fan,who remmbers this interveiw first time round. But as a Kiwi, the most emotional thing about this is seeing Dylan Taite again;the interviewer. He was eccentric and much beloved and died rather mysteriously a long while ago,and has proved irreplaceable.Just like Freddy, really.

  • freddie is so right with the British media, they don't give a shit who they offend just to get a story. Reminds me of a freddie quote from 1986 Live at Wembley concert - he said a lot of rumors had been going round about them breaking up and in reponse he said "Their talking out of their arse, we'll be together until we fucking well die" - such a sad lose and waste of a great man.

  • I also love to hear Freddie 'speak'. He has a lovely voice timbre.Gosh, he's wearing that live aid rehearsal t. shirt again. What a great shame Freddie felt hurt about the UK press. His concern was for the fans' following.

I realy like this interview because Freddie was very realistic in his comments. Yes, Freddie, wealth DOES bring problems...

  • maybe brings, but who doesn't want to be rich?that's kind of defence rich people always say asking about their money. It's such a hard work and blah bla...it's not a hard work in comparison to other jobs and superwell-paid so there's no reason to complain at all. don't get me wrong, it isn't my intension to offend anybody, just sorta ridiculous when weathy people say such things, and maybe that's partly true, they wouldn't change with anybody else; to some extent hypocrisy.... don't ya think?

  • @vicky19baby They did work hard, they were not born super wealthy. And to be in thier class musicaily you dont get there by sitting on your ass and not work at it. then there are all the concerts, that is work. Just because they were the best, it didnt happen with out hard work. If you have a profession, you enjoy, what ever that is, are you supose to apolgize for being suseful at it.

  • Oh shit, he does kind of cut them off lol.

    Oooopsie.

  • love freddie to death but he doesn't let the rest of the band to talk during interviews.

  • If you notice on interviews from their early career, Freddie stayed kind of quiet. He never really said much and always let others speak. Something happened along the way...he started to take charge during interviews later on for some reason. I love it though. For me, there isn't enough interviews with Freddie talking. He can talk all he wants! ;D

  • Freddie actually dislikes interviews, but he's very sound on his opinions. And the questions that were asked, affected him most. John doesn't talk because, he's John Deacon, Brian's regular, Roger talks a lot. It's not like he cuts them off or anything.

  • when freddie speaks, it's like he's an everyday person, no different than you or i. something unique and special happens when he sings tho, truly a one in a million talent. thanks for all the great tunes.

  • Legend!

  • haha Freddie, John, and Roger are all smoking...

  • Yes, that was weird. And drinking heineken...but they looked healthy anyway :P.

  • yes..in those days most rock stars did smoke if not all of them.

  • Brian's hair is always so good -what's his secret?

  • I don't know, but I love Freddie's hair in the early-mid 70's even more.....I even cut it to look like his hair recently! LOL I had bangs before I got into Queen, but I just HAD to have Freddie's hairstyle....love it so much........

  • You tell him Freddie I love when Freddie doesn't give a damn about things

  • @Ricky91993 actualy it sometimes is he dose give a damm he just dosent give a damm if you like his answer or not
