I heard he fell asleep at the wheel, and then crashed, not sure if he had been drinking though, but the accident ruined his career. I agree with Kevinasps comment below.
And it was probably his desire to help other people which helped to bring his own career to an end, as I believe he was very tired with Lord Taverner's business (He was president) at the time of his crash, and fell asleep at the wheel. He did seem a very nice, humble and sincere man, and it is a pity more aren't like him in show business today.
Did you know that on 16th September 1992 he visited Headway House at Bristol, responding to an invitation. Headway House is an organisation for people who have suffered brain injuries, and he came home, according to his wife, very moved by what he had seen. Then two and a half weeks later he had the car crash which resulted in him having two blood clots on his brain and ending his career.
No, I did not know that, but discovered he did a lot of work for charity behind the scenes.
Leslie Crowther seemed a very kind and generous man and was so pleasant the day I met him at his home, even though we were 30 minutes late meeting him for an interview.
Do you have any more of these interviews? (in his home). I went to a party there many many years ago (early 80's) and re-visited a few weeks ago. I hear his wife still lives in the village.

He spent many-a-christmas-morning entertaining children in hospital AND he looked as if it was THEIR happiness that was more important to him than his fee!
I have some other stuff to upload eventually,of interviews with leslie crowther, june whitfield & daughter and sir anthony quayle, thanks for watching, patrick
Thank you LismoreCommunityTV I will look forward to seeing the other bits and pieces that include Leslie Crowther.
Please May I ask do you have a clip of an interview that Leslie's successor as Stars in their eyes host Matthew Kelly when he interviewed Leslie on the 2nd anniversary of his accident?
Isn't it true he crashed his Rolls Royce while drunk? I'm not criticising, I'm only asking. He didn't last much longer after that.

Terribly unfair the last years of his life.
Much liked - much missed.

Dear Phillip 230357,
I could well imagine him to be like that,I was amazed how humble he was off screen at his home, compared to his TV image.
The day I interviewed him for a local community TV unit in Bath,he was as helpful as could be,even though we turned up 30 minutes late.
Much liked, much missed indeed! Patrick

Hey, that also means you're related to Phil Lynott - in a distant kind of way. Cooooool....

My fiance is Leslie Crowther's grandson and Phil Lynott is his uncle :)

I'm not related to either Leslie Crowther or Phil Lynott but I do have oily black hair AND can play the bass guitar - so similar I guess.

I agree, a very interesting clip. Always immaculately dressed, sincere and agreat man.
I wish I'd been born a woman so I could at least have kissed him several times.
