  • lol this was outlawed but people still drive em fuck laws

  • Bret Kepner!!! lol dis MFer was on every automotive VHS tape i owned when i was little, lol

  • great piece of pro stock history.

  • In 1993, Tom Lorek driving a single turbo 234 cid Stage II Buick engined car beat Billy Glidden's 310 NA Ford at the Grapple at Gateway II. Tom ran a 9.90 which was one of the fastest single turbo runs in the country. Lawrence Conley (Tweaked) couldn't make it to the event. He was running around 9.76 at the time. Would've been cool to see them together. The neat thing about the Buick V-6s is that you can run 11's at the strip and drive them home with the A/C on!

  • too bad buddy got legislated out ..it was all glidden behind the buddy ban

  • no EFI in pro stock ..make a EFI class in NHRA

  • BUDDY INGERSOLL – THE DAY MODERN TECHNOLOGY SCARED PRO STOCK. Ingersoll reached the final round of the 1986 IHRA Fall Nationals in Bristol, Tenn., and afterwards found himself banished back to NHRA’s Competition eliminator. If it hadn’t been for a burned up clutch in the final round against Pro Stock icon Bob Glidden, he might have been tarred and feathered in the pits.

  • Buddy Ingersoll was the shit in that lil V6... Damn shame Ricky Smith had to be such a sissy and whine and have that car banned from Pro Stock...

  • Ingersoll was on the break's before the finish in the final !!!!

  • @FABRIC8TIONUNLIMITE1 asking ? how do you know that ? was you there?

  • @1995vader : Yes I was twenty one .

  • nitrous vs. turbos in the final!!! lol

  • didnt they ban this car after this race i remember reading it in a car book

  • Old school, Bret Kepner.. I have a lot of old 80's on vhs.

  • Bret also covered Monster Trucks and Mud Racing.

  • Bob had to shut off his nitrous feed before he could get out to do the interveiw...lol

  • Billy was the one who used Nitrous. Bob just had a huge 700 inch motor here.

  • thanks for sharing this clip. I have heard about it but never thought I would get to see it thanks so much for posting it.

No thanks to ricky smith who complained and got buick kicked out big chicken.

    go buick.

  • the guys with the big cube cars all laughed at the buick with turbos, now look at the pro mod,out law and pro street classes and most of the record holders you'll find turbos under their hoods, they can all thank buick for bringing out turbos, fuel injection and intercooling all in one package..... the only reason buddy lost was his tranny was starting to give up and even then bob glidden barely got by him

  • i was there, that was the most awesome thing i ever saw,the mountain motors would leave first, but he handed them their butts at top end,way to go Buddy!

  • Buddy Rules, thank you for sharing the clip.

Laying the foundation for Turbo Buick V6s.

    Respect!

  • buddy ingersoll is my uncle

  • Call me crazy, but isn't that the Buick V6 Indy car engine?

  • Yes they use the same block and heads.

  • Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber doing IHRA drag racing? That's cool!

  • no nitrous.

  • You could buy a turbo V6 in a Regal but you couldn't buy a mountain motor in any of the Fords, Chryslers or Chevys. The other racers were bitching about Buddy's car racing in Pro Stock but his was the only legitimate representative of a vehicle you could buy off a showroom. The other racer were just scared of that bad Buick.

  • Thanks alot for that post man! I had never got to see Buddy compete in a IHRA event. Long live Buick!

  • excellent video, thanks for sharing with us..

  • IHRA allows 700 ci, NHRA only 500ci IHRA might alow nitrous too, not sure about that.

  • I'm confused here... 7.20's @ 190+ for pro stock in 1986??? i'm guessing there were different engine/weight combos allowed in IHRA vs NHRA in those days. can someone enlighten me?

was glidden running a lighter car or more CI's for IHRA races? sorry if the question seems dumb, i wasn't even in kindergarten yet in 1986.

  • I was at the opening of the Texas Motorplex, their first NHRA race there. Buddy wanted to run prostock, he claimed he was more stock then the other 500 inchers where he was 262 ci and Buick did have a turbo that year. All the prostock boys got together and said no way. He was beating their et's big time. He carried his front wheel half track. It was amazing.

  • They let the Buick run because it had a V6 in it. No one knew what twin turbos were or what they could do. You could have heard a pin drop on Saturday night when he became the #1 qualifer. It was still "run whatcha brung" for everybody else. Fords at the time were the biggest with their 672 cu in motor. Can't remember the Chevys, but nothing sounded or ran like a Reher-Morrison-Shepherd motor. Good Times!

  • IHRA's Pro Stocks are Mountain Motors (up to over 800 cubic inches), thus they run about 3 tenths of a second, and about 15-20 mph faster than an NHRA Pro Stock car.

  • This footage is priceless for a drag racing fan. Its 1 thing to see that car make a exhibition run but to see it actually run in competition is cool! 5 stars!

  • Long live the Buick V-6 Turbo!!!!! Even though they no longer compete in the Pro Stock NHRA and the IHRA,they are still a force to be reckoned with.

  • Buddy also had a turbo charged I believe Pinto he ran in the old NHRA Modified eliminator where the faster you ran under the NHRA index for the class you were in the more likely you would win. Buddy was so far under the NHRA index no one else had a chance. NHRA did not know how to factor the index for a turbo car in those days. Then he came up with the IHRA Pro Stock combination that you see here which they outlawed. Just can't match turbo power power to weight with just a lot of cubic inches.

  • haha Buick v6 turbo in the 7's sense the 80's

    legit!

  • only reason glidden beat him top end he fried his clutch the never ran again

  • bummer.

  • The only reason I can think of why Turbo charging was outlawed in Pro Stock is you could build unlimited power with the Turbo where as naturally aspirated engines takes a lot more development to find power. Even major amount of cubic inches could not overcome the power boost of the turbo.

  • That's correct, if the turbo 6 was developed at Pro Stock level continuously like the mountain motors were, it would have dominated the class. Boost, fuel and great headflow make monster power. Just look at what streetcars are doing now, 1000hp is normal and you have to do 1500hp or better at the wheels to be a major player.

  • Great video.........Thanks for posting it.

  • Interesting broadcast team...

Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber doing drag racing??? Bret Kepner I was expecting.

  • @racermac1988 Yeah, usually I think of your IHRA team as Bob Varsha, and Ted Jones, with Bret Kepner at the far end.

  • why was it outlawed?

  • What ever happened to this car? Why was it outlawed? 5stars, thanks for posting!!

    Jasson, Edinburg Texas

  • Wow, Thanks for this video! Bob Glidden was in his heyday and Buddy Ingersoll was on his way up. Too bad rulles killed the Buick V-6 and he later switched to a V-8. I really miss the turbo-6. Bob Glidden has over 75 wins in NHRA Pro Stock and is surely missed. There is nothing, and I mean nothing like a WJ and Bob final.

  • Notice the whole damn parachute coming off the car..

  • Bad Buddy had 'em scared!!
