People like you really do tend to forget that, beyond the delivery, the line itself -- like many lines in the movie -- is very funny, and the credit for that deserves to go to the screenwriter. I see dozens of comments praising De Niro, but NOT ONE praising the screenwriter, and he deserves far better than that. De Niro made this movie good because he was given good material.

the timeframe here doesn't fit well. If it was dark in LA that would mean it was at least 7:00 PM there, and they would have to be getting on a plane right then to make midnight. Which they were not. Also if it was a domestic flight they would be way more likely to fly out of LaGuardia
