@ALegitBiscuit only 15 flights have ever survived ditching in the history of aviation. They really only work when you land on a totally smooth body of water. Even small waves can result in the jet breaking apart. Also, jets with engines under the wings (as this one had) will act like giant parachutes, causing the planes front section to slam in to the water and break up. US Airways 1549 only made it because it had engines above the water on the tail section and it landed on a glassy river.

Jacksite2007. It actually happened. The pilot "deadsticked" his plan on the runway of a former military base that was being used by locals as a drag strip. As a matter of fact that plane, the "Gimli Glider" was officially retired either late last year or earlier this year by Air Canada.

When I was listening to the original operatic version a while back, this event began playing through my mind as the visuals. I know it's not to everyone's liking and I must admit, I didn't put nearly as much effort in to it as I have with other videos. The pilot landed at an old abandant airstrip (out of fuel) in Gimli Manitoba, hense the name, Gimli Glider. A foot note to the event, the findings of the mishap were programmed into a flight simulator and airline pilots from around the world were invited to try and land the plane (simulator) , all who tried, failed. A true testiment to the Capt. of AC flight 143. He can fly my plane anytime.

I know this might surprise you, but jets can still fly without engine power (they're not helicopters), they just have to pitch the nose down more to maintain lift. It seems that this pilots are still fighting against some unknown forces, pulling an pushing the trembling commands as kids playing at the xbox. to glide inbound to land, is so usual than eating spaghettis so I couldn´t understand why they put that horror faces and expressions.

@arturowing You should look up "Air Canada Flight 143 (Gimli Glider)". The reason the pilots had to contort the plane like that was to put it in to a crab configuration in order to loose a huge amount of altitude without gaining speed. If they had just nose-downed, they would have been over-speeding by the time they hit the runway but they didn't have enough altitude either to circle around. So the captain (an experienced hand glider) put the jet in to a hand gliding maneuver to pull it off.

I remember reading about this incident. It was cover story on an issue of Popular Mechanics or Popular Science. I can't remember which. It was an interesting story. Something about conversion tables being misread and the plane flamed out both engines and had to glide down. That article was where I learned that the 767 has this little ram air turbine that drops down and the wind pressure powers a little pump to give them at least some hydraulics.
