West Ham United contest the first ever FA Cup Final at Wembley. Legendary as the White Horse Final, more than 250,000 Eastenders march arm-in-arm from East London to Wembley, singing the veterans' hymn from the First World War, "Abide With Me". The song is now officially sung at each FA Cup final.
Wonderfully sung by the two women!! About their dresses we could certainly discuss, but it's the voice that counts. It's only a pity that West Ham United, my favourite team of England (and the team of the world champions Moore, Peters and Hurst) lost this game. WEST HAM UNITED FOREVER!!!!! Greetings from Germany.
Amazingly someone has posted a recording of the first time 'Abide With Me' was sung in 1927 with 92,000 voices. Even on an old LP its stunning, what must it have sounded like on the pitch? Its in YouTube under "Live recording from The F A Cup final 1927 "abide with Me" 92,000 voices"
This hymn got violated by these women, who - by the way - were dressed awfully to sing a hymn with such a history. This hymn carries so much emotion, grief and pain... and then these women abuse it for football... it's truly despicable!
@ThePearldrop: No, the sin was the fact that the performers dressed inapropriately when singing it. It can't be a sin to spread God's word in song to millions watching.
grwo how right you are. society is becoming less respectful.......100K people at wembley singing Abide With Me was always part of cup final tradition.
Looks like there must be all of 25 people in the crowd joining in. Can't see why they would want to join in with that singer screeching and wailing - bloody awful racket. What bright spark came up with the idea of copying the yanks and having someone "leading" the singing? It seems to have buggered the whole thing up. So, all in all, a bit of a waste of time don't you think? Just get on with the game.
@adamswampy The last time it sounded great was 89, when Gerry Marsden sang it together with You'll Never Walk Alone when it was Liverpool v Everton, a month or so after Hillsborough. Also I recall Russell Watson doing a good job of it, what it needs is a male voice, preferably a football fan, doing it. A proper football fan would understand the importance of the song, together with it's significance as part of the Cup Final
Sing it how it's meant to be sung, a stadium full of football fans singing together sounds better than any opera singer ever will. Listening to the Kop, the Stretford End, Upton Park or Fratton Park tells you that one.
@mjrooney7 Umm, the one on the left happens to be Lesley Garret, one of the most distinguised and respected opera singers in the world. Still, I am sure she will welcome your opinion on what is appropiate!
@sion7111 IT WAS THE CUP FINAL, YOU FUCKING IDIOT, NOT A CATHEDRAL! Im surprised that you have posted, because i didnt know that the amish used computers. I guess some bearded cunt must be peddling like fucking mad to make the electricity for you.
@streetender1878 Humm, what can I say to a person like you, who try to insult a woman that you don't know, and that use ad hominen attacks instead of arguments? I owe you no response about my opinions, because the level of your answer is so sadly low. And, no, I'm not an amish, but I don't consider an amish a bad person. They are free to behave in the way that they prefer and they deserve respect like every other human being in our planet.
@sion7111 i dont need to know you to make comments. i respond to your comments. also, i dont need your responses because i dont care about them. i say again, it was the cup final, not a cathedral and god had very little to do with it. you say that, and i quote, "they are free to behave in any way that they prefer and they deserve respect like every other human being in our planet" yet you clearly dont extend the same courtesy to lesley garrett and the way she dressed. so grow up!
@streetender1878 I didn't disrespect her in ANY WAY, I just said that her dress was "inappropriate" but YOU call me "FUC*** IDIOT" because of my comment!!! And you dare to talk me about RESPECT??? And then you tell me to "grow up"??? Stop talking to me, please.
@sion7111 you said "her dress was inappropriate at best". you obviously are a fucking idiot. if you dont know what you are talking about, then shut the fuck up.
You right. times have moved on and unless they get whoever is the latest musical thing the crowd will tolerate it but it's a bit of a non event really. Shame, as the poem/song is rather prophetic really.
Abide With Me is a beautiful English hymn, traditionally associated with our coastal towns where men have for centuries risked their lives in dangerous seas. The rendition wasn't that good; it is supposed to be choral but you couldn't hear the choir for the histrionic female singing, in fact you could barely hear the band ! That said, I agree that the fans should have picked it up and sung it out loud; they look like school kids embarrased to be the first to join in. Dr.M.J Pfeiffer
Aren't you thinking of Eternal Father, Strong to save?.That is the Sailor's Hymn.Abide with me is certainly a beautiful hymn but at matches I would prefer Wm Blake's Jerusalem. When George V was dying the crowd around Buckingham palace gates sang Abide with me . I also can't stand women who screech or use excessive vibrato and that is why I prefer a boy's treble voice for hymns.
Are you people for real?? The second phrase of the hymn was being sung by Becky and had the weaker voice. Katherine Jenkins is a good singer too but is more popular due to her looks and large assets I suspect. Lesley is by far a superior singer. Can't expect footie fans to know any better I suppose! By the way, the "random waaa" was actually what is called singing descant!
How times have changed. Go back 50 years and you'd have had 70 000 people roaring that out. Now they look on clueless, wondering what it is all about - perhaps that is just a response to Garrett's awful rendition?
@TamBellyDadMomom it is a shame i wish the terraces would still be full of the traditional english spirit. its truely moving to here the hymns sung by thousands of people but now its just meaningless chants about steve gerrard :(
Is she the one screaming at the end? If so I'd agree with you! .... For some reason I like this song, but not when its sung by a pretentious opera singer.
should have the fans singing it - not just being able to hear 2 poeple - the fa cup is is, in my opinion, the best football competition in world, simply because it is everything traditional abpout the game - its for the fans, not the money makers
they say its not for money makers. though 25% of the seating allocation goes to officials of the FA and people who are affiliated to the FA through business. Many of which aren't interested in football or dont support the teams involved, but they still go and take up valuable space.
i know that coss man united will have 60,000 season ticket holders and ony half can go aswell, same with other big clubs aswell, the refs dnt deserve a ticket coss there fukin arseholes
Why oh why can't they just let the fans get on with it, it would be far more poignant if the fans were singing it in unison instead of a couple of whining "stars". Oh probably it's the Welsh "Love" of all things choral - well that was bloody awful!

I don't have a problem listing to anyone with a great voice belt that song out.
But what ever happened to the days when the band use to play and the crowd only would do the singing?

I agree Kara, nothing better than hearing the crowd and band in unison, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand.

If you're going to sing a hymn at least dress appropriately. The one on the left looks like she's going to a nightclub.
