Although he never actually performed the role, My personal favourite version is that of Ian Gillan on the original concept album. In order of best performances of this role, are: 1) Ted Neely 2) Steve Balsamo 3)Glen Carter
@oneslifesadream I guess because Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was never performed as a "rock opera". I think that JCS was originally intended as rock, but I like both versions actually.
Nothing personal. I know that all the performers are excellenct but when I watch the 2000 version of JCS I feel like I'm watching Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
@Weboanime I don't know, Neely and Gillan had more of a rocker take on the role (which is appropriate considering the nature of its audience). This production is a bit more theatrical in style, to which Carter's ability plays toward.
Gosh, there's been quite a few negative comments recently. I actually enjoyed this performance - in fact, the whole DVD production (with the exception of Rik Mayall's appalling Herod) is probably one of the best I've seen. I've seen JCS on stage twice before and this DVD production is up to par. I've seen the original score of this show, and the two led males are singing in their original key. It was written like this, and I think they've done Baron Andrew Lloyd-Webber Proud.
Know what? I like all the Jesuses! ;) Glenn has a truly stunning voice, plus he's handsome. Ted also has a good voice, is also handsome (or at least he was back in '73!), and interprets the character well - and he's got that great rock 'n' roll scream. And Ian Gillan, I think, is a combination of both - less theatrical than Glenn, but heavier on traditional vocal technique than Ted. They all rock, IMHO.
@LauraEmi90 direi che il termine ridicoli li descrive alla perfezione :P cantata e interpretata benissimo..solo le parti alte le fa suonare troppo leggere
Having loved the first one (1973) I didn't even know about the other version (2000) and now that I've seen and heard both I much prefer Glenn Carter as Jesus. While his suffering may be more subtle it is still very potent. Pontius Pilate was so much more moving and displaying his torment than in this version. All in all each is good in its own way but I prefer this version.
The difference between Ted and Glen is the way they performe. In the videos of Ted I see that he really understands what he is singing about. After all, it is an experience that no one will ever have. I strongly feel that Glen rehearsed too much: 'I must look pleasured there, I must look angry there...' Ted is the role, and Glen plays the role. That's a huge difference.
Yes, I must admit that I far prefer Ted Neely in the role, I think his scratchy worn voice adds something to the character and the passion; I think Jesus plays better as someone without a perfect voice. The depth of feeling he gets is amazing and touched me every single time. That being said, Carter here has a magnificent voice and I don't think you can't deny he feels the passion and the pain. It is a great rendition, but a bit too theatrical-a bit too clean for me.
@Nassausgonefunky Weird how A Texan played Jesus in The `78 Film and here An Englishman , who seems to channel Neely`s accent at one point , plays him . Yeshua / Jesus was Northern Galilean born in Bethlehem in the Judean province of Nazareth . And no according to The Bible , he did not have a perfect voice . Infact , a Sadducee described Yeshua`s voice as " rough " and " gutteral " which was considered typical of Northern Judeans .
One day I saw Jesus Christ Superstar on the guide and thinking it was the 1973 version turned it on and it was on the "Temple" scene in the 2000 film. I morbidly stared in stunned silence and came to the conclusion that this version HAD to be like a comical parody. Like how "Scary Movie" is a parody/spoof of Scream and other random horror movies". Sadly I was wrong. WTF were they thinking. I wanted to gouge out my eyes and ear drums. However those might be useful so I just changed the channel.
such a desolution : Yes Ted was more look alike with the Jesus( the appearance we think he has) but his vocals were terribleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! All he would do was scream in a "rocky" way, there wasn't no singing at all trough the whole song,Yes he did have an amzing edy voice but not for singing only for doing his rock thing wich I don't really consider as singing because If he realy wanted to sing he would not have almost talked the whole beginning of the song
I know that almost anybody will agree with me but in my honest opininon Glenn is much better than Ted. When I first heard Glen's performance I was carried away by its magnificence and then I started noticing that every single comment posted here was about how he couldn't sing and how Ted was much better so I realized I had to see Ted's to see how better this song could even get....
I don't understand why so many people on here say that Glen Carter does not make a good Jesus in this, and that he lacks passion! I think this guy sounds amazing! I do prefer the Ted Neely version however because he adds the rock 'n' roll edge to it that makes it a rock opera, but this guy sounds angelic!
Come on guys. There of course need to be other versions, not only the canonic ones. The guy's emotions are all very true, he catches the soul and takes it away in pain... Well, his voice isn't the rock one, so what? We have to have some variety to chose from :-) I watched this movie back then and it touched me much more than the one with Ted Neeley. The voices are different, but the impact of the pieces is none the less strong. It's also well known that we value most the first we've experienced.
This guy lacks.....soul. He's showtuning this piece of music and i think his voice is fine for Disney movies but not for a rock opera. Listen to Ian Gillan sing this and it will bring you to knees.
Some aspects of this I really love, he's so heartbreakingly vulnerable throughout a lot of it. And his voice is really angelic. It still had a great, powerful impact. But something just wasn't there, he sang the end awesomely, but he played it way too defiant. And the falsetto's just not right... He's a great actor and singer, but he was missing that intensity Ted Neeley had. He didn't quite sell himself as Jesus.
нет, наш Дмитрий Билан спел гораздо лучше: с душой ! А тут что ? облаял всех и вся ((((((( мне не нравится это исполнение, особенно подвывание (((((( и визги ((((
He is beautiful and can sing, but he is a personage of romance novel. I do not believe him. He is affected and he show off. It is hamming, his emotions are zero. But the actor must live the role. Ted Neley did so much better.
Nd a great actor. Andrew Lloyd webber said that this version was how he envisioned how he wanted Jesus Christ superstar to be like. How the setting was, the music, the actors. He wanted it to look more like it was on broadway and not have that outside setting. In the end of this production he was really happy. So I personally love this version but everyone has their opinions but don't go trashing this one. This one is great and will always be one of my favorites:)
Okay I've read a lot of the comments on here about this version and this is usually how things turn out. People start comparing the older version to the newer version. I have loved Jesus Christ superstar since I was a kid but I personally like this version better then the 1973 version plus people should except something new and stop living in the past. Everyone has their own opinions and yes the 1973 version may be more your type like the music but don't go trashing Glenn. He's a great singer a
Im willing to move on and change, accepting new artists. How about they are both quality individuals? I personally think Ted Neeley is good, but I wonder if some ppl still like him bc they refuse to allow anyone else to inspire them.
Thats bull shit Glen Carter is amazing and has perfect emotion and voice for this role. And the old movie is horible expect for judas who is only some what okay. Ted Neeley is a terible singer who has no emotion or passion in his voice. I think I could sing this song better and im a low bass
Ted Neeley is the one Jesus Christ Superstar! But maybe the best singer to this is Ian Gillan. His great voice makes it wonderfull, but ted is also an actor and gives it an emotion that is unbeatable.
Saw Glen as Simon Zealot in the 1996/97 West End Show..... He was very good in that part, but this.... NONONO!!!!! Two words Steve Balsamo!!!!! Glen was his understudy in the show....nuff said!
This guy really has a great voice. But Ted Neeley was and is MUCH better! This guy sings this song awfully and his emotions leave much to be desired. I think the version of 1973 is the best and will always be! Noone and nothing can beat it, to say nothing of great rock voices which are now unfortunetly reraly found((And in this video the emotions are very wrong..no pain, no suffering. My friend who does not know English thought that he was singing about love!!!! (She didn't know it is from JCs)
@RusIRish I would agree with you. The better than Ted Neeley did probably no one will do closely. I just repeatedly viewed the Gethsemane from 1973 and this one and truly this one is much more artifical.
This guy is actually the leader of the British section of a UFO Raelian Religion Movement. They do sand paintings and set up embassies for extraterrestrials and their symbol is a swastika.....
He is not for this role, although he did his best. He has a face of an warrior and a fighter. He is handsome and strong. And the way how he "comes to his senses" after arguing with God with "all right, I''ll die" is simply breath-taking. But Jesus has to be soft in some ways outside and strong inside, and then it is logical that he is "sad and tired" and scared, and yet ready to go the distance. Glen looks way too strong and masculine for this part. He is a Greek god, not the Christian one
@jules169 LoL.. are you serious??? He looks like the bitches we used to smack around in high school. I had long hair just like that and got high and shit... but this guy looks like a fag mammas boy. He definately doesnt hold a candle to Ted Neeley.. OMG.. I just heard him hit the high note.. he sounds gay as hell... Seriously, this guy SUCKS!
@dragontooth81 Of course he doesn't hold a candle to Ted Neeley.. However I can easily imagine Clen as Paris or Apollo or Zeus, and it was ok for ancient Greeks to be gay ) Just not Jesus
I think this guy does an admirable job at this extremely difficult role, vocally wise. People have no idea how difficult this singing performance is. Few men can pull it off. I just happen to favor Steve Balsamo's singing of this song and Ted Neely's raw emotion. He will always be "Jesus" to me.
Ted Neeley pretty much made it so i would never like this Jesus....Ted had so much passion and sang from his soul. Glen Carter has good vocal technique but it is not bone chilling. I have to watch him to get any emotions. Ted i just have to listen for a second and i wanna cry. just my opinion though!
I've listened all kind of versions of this song and Ted Neely knows how to interpretate the character but the guy in this video knows how to sing well. He is using his knowledges of vocal technique and that's the most important thing because if you are a singer and you harm your instrument that is the voice you're wrong. As a singer i think he sings it very good.I would like a bit more interpretation, its not too bad but can be better.
first let me say im not religious, i see this story a bit like lord of the rings. Anyway wanted to say that i like the 2000 version as much as the original. It has its own charm.
I love him and for all of you saying he's a bad actor I reckon he is the best Jesus....you don't know a thing about acting if you don't think he's very good.
...Ted Neely was dull in his expression. I had a hard time telling whether he was sad/happy/or angry. Perhaps the filming technique at that time was not so efficient. And he did not seem too passionate in his songs. From Hosana to Gethsemane, there was very little emotional shifts. I was in general, unmoved by this version. Ian Gillan never portrayed Jesus on stage before, whoever said he was a true JC is, in my opinion, silly!!! Rock star, yes! Jesus, no! ....Cheers
This 2-part comment is dedicated to those who despise this version of JCS and insist that either Ted Neely/Ian Gillan/or Steve Balsamo is the true JC! As a JCS fanatic, I've keenly watched/listened to all the versions of JC's. Steve Balsamo was the best in term of vocal display and facial expression. Glenn Carter came in 2nd. He was exactly what the director was looking for, a singer w/ Christ-like appearance who really COULD act, even though his vocal is not as beautiful in compare to Steve's..
He does not look like Jesus at all. He doesn't really have the appearance or voice for the role. His falsetto is not strong enough for the higher notes. He shouts random words like DIE, and he doesn't put enough emotion into it, he does have his great moments, but some parts are just redundant. Same look and hand movements throughout. Not my favorite.
have nothing against him..but he doesn´t really looked like how i imagined jesus...ted neeley was more like it. they should do another version, i can´t get enough of this opera :D
I understand that most people prefer the first version of a musical they hear. I, however, am thoroughly impressed with this actor. Those high notes give me chills every time I hear them. And he does a great job of portraying a man filled with confusion and only asking the eternal question we all ask: why?
I don't get all the bad response to this... He sings great. You guys always compare with other versions and yeah, maybe the way they sung it in the 1973 version was a bit more of your taste. But don't say Glenn Carter is crap because that is a lie.
Some off you are kinda stupid cause glenn Carter does this amazing hè acts great hè have an awesome Voice i bet that the negative people are just jealouse or do not have any taste or knowledge about musicals i also like The old JCS but i think glenn is à bit better & sorry for My bad english
Glenn Carter's all right in this role, but I don't really like his Gethsemane. A lot of the early part feels like a sappy love song and when the energy does intensify, he comes across a little like a bratty kid who doesn't want to listen to his dad and then gives in but with a heavy flavour of "only 'cause I have to."
This is just...uninspiring...it's supposed to be a ROCK opera. I swear this song was written for Ian Gillan and Ian Gillan ALONE.....drop the Disney voice to quote some of the other comments on here and grow some dude.
I'm sorry, this guy seems like a weenie. Ted Neeley seemed like he was actually going through all the shit that he was singing about, this guy seems like a bad actor/whiny brat. Not sure why they had to remake this especially with someone who has no soul.
@Gekkonidae11 Thank youu for liking him so much, i apsolutely adore him to bits and all these horrible people are critisizing him for the way he acted in this film, he's apsolutely amazing, hes no ted neeley but he is still amazing
This sounds like some spoiled bratt that didn't get his way.. I was watching the whole movie but I couldn't stomach the attitude this Jesus had. He was a real ass.. I'd rather read it in the bible than watch this Jesus be an ass.. From now on I'll just stick to the Steve Balsamo version. He ROCKS it. (if my english is bad. to bad.. it's not my native language..)
@AlieaxKiba in order to make this a legitimate Christian play including a resurrection, all the liberals and all the effeminate actors would need to be fired and a bunch of zealous Jews would need to be hired. Then there's still only a very small chance the production could even begin to justify the EPIC BIBLICAL ACCOUNT that is the TRUTH whether or not anyone tries to deny it for personal reasons....like not wanting to have God be their final authority.
I despise this version of the story... But god. I do love the new instrumentals.

RusIRish 4 months ago 26
@RusIRish I would agree with you. The better than Ted Neeley did probably no one will do closely. I just repeatedly viewed the Gethsemane from 1973 and this one and truly this one is much more artifical.

He is a Greek god, not the Christian one
jules169 5 months ago
@jules169 LoL.. are you serious??? He looks like the bitches we used to smack around in high school. I had long hair just like that and got high and shit... but this guy looks like a fag mammas boy. He definately doesnt hold a candle to Ted Neeley.. OMG.. I just heard him hit the high note.. he sounds gay as hell... Seriously, this guy SUCKS!
dragontooth81 4 months ago
@dragontooth81 Of course he doesn't hold a candle to Ted Neeley.. However I can easily imagine Clen as Paris or Apollo or Zeus, and it was ok for ancient Greeks to be gay ) Just not Jesus
jules169 4 months ago
He's not intensive enough. Too less emotion. And his voice is too clean to show something. Although his falsett is not strong enough to sound good..
I can do it much better...
ps.: wrong emotions at the wrong parts.

Let´s wait until 2014, there will be a new movie production of JCS.
The roll of Jesus ?
And who plays judas?

I love this version. Ted was surely great, but I love this "week Jesus", too. Jesus is god, but also human at the same time.

Does Glen remind you of Michael Bolton?

Thanks gextvedde. I've listen at that version its pretty amazing
mezzorfeo90 5 months ago
Have you heard Steve Balsomo's version of this? It might be the combination of vocal technique & emotion you're looking for.
gextvedde 6 months ago
I've listened all kind of versions of this song and Ted Neely knows how to interpretate the character but the guy in this video knows how to sing well. He is using his knowledges of vocal technique and that's the most important thing because if you are a singer and you harm your instrument that is the voice you're wrong. As a singer i think he sings it very good.I would like a bit more interpretation, its not too bad but can be better.
mezzorfeo90 6 months ago
i mean this is a "gay Jesus", not "guy Jesus" xD
illvito13 6 months ago
This guy uses a falsetto to the high notes of the song? Ted Neely really knows how to sing. Also, this a guy Jesus xD
illvito13 6 months ago
This is gay (not in a good way), bad acting, bad vocals. This isnt even worthy to kiss the 1973 version's feet....
RyanDavidAshley 6 months ago
first let me say im not religious, i see this story a bit like lord of the rings. Anyway wanted to say that i like the 2000 version as much as the original. It has its own charm.
Calamaistr 6 months ago
Vocals were very weak when he hit the high notes....I'm dissapointed
XXmrsXXshadowsXX 6 months ago
I love him and for all of you saying he's a bad actor I reckon he is the best Jesus....you don't know a thing about acting if you don't think he's very good.
TheAnnaGurlisBack 6 months ago
...Ted Neely was dull in his expression. Jesus, no! ....Cheers
daungocanh 6 months ago
This 2-part comment is dedicated to those who despise this version of JCS and insist that either Ted Neely/Ian Gillan/or Steve Balsamo is the true JC! As a JCS fanatic, I've keenly watched/listened to all the versions of JC's. Steve Balsamo was the best in term of vocal display and facial expression. Glenn Carter came in 2nd. He was exactly what the director was looking for, a singer w/ Christ-like appearance who really COULD act, even though his vocal is not as beautiful in compare to Steve's..
daungocanh 6 months ago
He does not look like Jesus at all. He doesn't really have the appearance or voice for the role. His falsetto is not strong enough for the higher notes. He shouts random words like DIE, and he doesn't put enough emotion into it, he does have his great moments, but some parts are just redundant. Same look and hand movements throughout. Not my favorite.
JAyala7293 6 months ago
have nothing against him..but he doesn´t really looked like how i imagined jesus...ted neeley was more like it. they should do another version, i can´t get enough of this opera :D
Lilithly 7 months ago
I understand that most people prefer the first version of a musical they hear. I, however, am thoroughly impressed with this actor. Those high notes give me chills every time I hear them. And he does a great job of portraying a man filled with confusion and only asking the eternal question we all ask: why?
randomabuserofsanity 7 months ago
I don't get all the bad response to this... He sings great. You guys always compare with other versions and yeah, maybe the way they sung it in the 1973 version was a bit more of your taste. But don't say Glenn Carter is crap because that is a lie.

RhondaaCrazy 7 months ago
Glenn Carter's all right in this role, but I don't really like his Gethsemane. A lot of the early part feels like a sappy love song and when the energy does intensify, he comes across a little like a bratty kid who doesn't want to listen to his dad and then gives in but with a heavy flavour of "only 'cause I have to."
stitch99 7 months ago
I think he deserves this historical role "just a little" 3:30 :-P
