That makes the decision a valid one provided you have more than one brain cell. The fact that it saved the lives of more forced labourers and POWs in Japan EVERY MONTH than were killed in these cities is a bonus. So too is the estimated 2 Allied deaths that would have been the consequence of an invasion.

By 1945, whole German divisions were trying desperately to surrender to the British and Americans rather than have to fight the Russians. Great Britain and America had forces deployed in Western Germany for 50 years after 1945 to help protect you from the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries - you can't deny that.

He was one of the 10,000 troops sent by the French King Louis to help the American colonists fight the British during the American war of independence. The evocative WWII era 'packed faced cold German soldier' which has penetrated our collective conciousness remains a beast of terror, A creature of evil and domination not to mention destruction. Today's modern German is so far removed from that image. Friendlier, warmer and even more compasionate person than that of old. The shear scale of Nazism and the wake of distruction has left a deep imprint and this at least has made something positive by making the German a more helpful amicable kind.
I thought, correct me if I´m wrong here that the allies bombed the cities to deplete the Luftwaffe for the coming D-Day landings. Luftwaffe had to defend the cities and die there against the escortfighters instead of disputing the beaches at Normandy. Even if the bombings didnt do that actual damage to the production it did make Germany put resources on AA-defences and sacrificing fighters who could be used elsewhere.
It's a shame that the beautiful architecture of German cities were suffered severe damage and destruction because of the allies strategy of aerial bombing but you also have to consider the terror of Hitler's Nazi regime. It's destructive and expansionistic ambitions and as a result, the materialisation of endless rows upon rows of identikit packed faced cold cold cold German soldiers marching over the horizon. This awful spectre was getting hit back by these fine American (and British) pilots.
I wouldnt care as much about the destruction of architexture as all the civilians dying on the ground. If the spectre were cold cold german soldiers why not bomb them instead??

As for bombing 'cold German soldiers' only .This was proposed by the allies at the start but it was soon realised that many of the 'colds' would return to the homeland 'on leave' and would desguise themselves as civilians and it was even discovered they had families of there own. To counter this the Allies decided to start bombing arbitrary civlian targets.

My granddad was in Bomber Command during the war & very proud of it. However, in my bolshie youth phase (roughly 16-23) I would say he was a ‘war criminal’ for killing German civilians.
At his 70th birthday we had a garden party at our house & I decided it would be funny to drop an old TV onto proceedings from a skylight roof window- to “see how he liked being bombed without warning”. It injured 3 guests (one permanently scarred) & my granddad never spoke to me again- he died 5yrs later.

@QuintusSecundus The reasoning behind Nagasaki and Hiroshima was to spare the 20,000,000 Japanese estimated deaths which would result from an invasion. That makes the decision a valid one provided you have more than one brain cell. The fact that it saved the lives of more forced labourers and POWs in Japan EVERY MONTH than were killed in these cities is a bonus. So too is the estimated 2 Allied deaths that would have been the consequence of an invasion.

There's no way that they could have rebuild their fleet with americans dominating the sea all around them and having total air superiority, especially considering how few resources they had. I grew up in an English city - Bristol - that had been pummelled by the German Luftwaffe. Bristol still bears the scars of that bombing to this day. By 1945, whole German divisions were trying desperately to surrender to the British and Americans rather than have to fight the Russians. Great Britain and America had forces deployed in Western Germany for 50 years after 1945 to help protect you from the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries - you can't deny that.

@nightwish1000 The immediate post war Germany was hated not loved. I've got a distant ancestor who was born in Pforzheim in 1745 in what is now Southern Germany. He was one of the 10,000 troops sent by the French King Louis to help the American colonists fight the British during the American war of independence. I was going to go to Pforzheim to research his life there. However, Pforzheim was almost completely destroyed by the RAF in 1945 - there you go - I'm a bombing victim as well. ;-)

As a young man I was fortunate to speak to a german family in Hamburg in 1965..about the bombing...they were just like the British..bloody terrified..Hitler actually seized power and righted the wrongs of the 'treaty of versailles...they were delighted at first but had to pay a terrible price later.Imagine Berlin, London., Cologne and hundreds of other cities without bomb damage..what a wonderful sight to see and what a legacy for future generations,,,a great shame.

Basic WW2 history. Hitler named Chancellor of Germany in 1933. Took back control of the Rhineland in 1936. Started rearming(Violation of Treaty of Versialle). In 1938, invaded Sudentenland(German Majority part of Czechoslavakia). Later that year invaded the rest of czechoslavikia and in 1939 invaded Austria. Next on his list was Poland which he invaded Sept 1, 1939 starting WW2. France and Britain declared war Sept 3, 1939. Please Fangiopiacentini explain How Britain started WW2.

The Luftwaffe bombed Guernica, Spain on April 26, 1937, just for practice. It wasn't even their war.
Germany started WW2 by invading Poland on September 1, 1939. They immediately started bombing Warsaw, including incendiary bombing, and only stopped at the ceasefire on September 27, 1939.
The Luftwaffe then bombed Rotterdam flat on 14 May 1940.
The RAF first bombed Berlin on 25 August 1940.
Germany enslaved Europe and murdered millions of civilians and POWs.

Warschau, Rotterdam & Coventry wasn´t bombing against citizens. In Coventry was the primary British weapon instustrie. The British has started bombing German towns first. (Mönchengladbach, Berlin). Harris is not a hero, but a mass murderer. The japanese has no holocoust. Innoccent citizens are punished with mass destruction weapon, which makes no difference between children, woman or soldier. The evocative WWII era 'packed faced cold German soldier' which has penetrated our collective conciousness remains a beast of terror, A creature of evil and domination not to mention destruction. Today's modern German is so far removed from that image. Friendlier, warmer and even more compasionate person than that of old. The shear scale of Nazism and the wake of distruction has left a deep imprint and this at least has made something positive by making the German a more helpful amicable kind.

I thought, correct me if I´m wrong here that the allies bombed the cities to deplete the Luftwaffe for the coming D-Day landings. Luftwaffe had to defend the cities and die there against the escortfighters instead of disputing the beaches at Normandy. Even if the bombings didnt do that actual damage to the production it did make Germany put resources on AA-defences and sacrificing fighters who could be used elsewhere.

It's a shame that the beautiful architecture of German cities were suffered severe damage and destruction because of the allies strategy of aerial bombing but you also have to consider the terror of Hitler's Nazi regime. It's destructive and expansionistic ambitions and as a result, the materialisation of endless rows upon rows of identikit packed faced cold cold cold German soldiers marching over the horizon. This awful spectre was getting hit back by these fine American (and British) pilots.

Architecture is important as it gives a place a sense of history and culture as well as aesthetic enhancement. It will last for generations. As for bombing 'cold German soldiers' only .This was proposed by the allies at the start but it was soon realised that many of the 'colds' would return to the homeland 'on leave' and would desguise themselves as civilians and it was even discovered they had families of there own. To counter this the Allies decided to start bombing arbitrary civlian targets.
