Any chance you could post the chords for this song? I've been looking for them and have most of the from just watching you, but your guitar necks dips just enough that I miss a few and I can't be sure.
Larry...I love your music....At the end of the day, there is one thing that i believe and know is the GODS honest truth...The door into the most genuine, incredible, and powerful music is right here at your channel...That is a door that I, and thousands of others, have opened....That door will NEVER be shut....I love hearing you sing this here and seeing the happiness on your face when you entertain....You are so the MUSICMAN:)))...ione marie
Larry, I'm just glad that i'm not the only closet monkees fan out there. This has to be my favourite besides perhaps sunny girlfriend. you do a lovely job with this. From an aussie monkees tragic.
Larry...You do their music very well....The first time i heard this cover of your's was the first time i heard the song ever....And of course, i was very glad it was this one i heard....One thing i can say about this song, unlike having to wait 2 more seasons to pass for summer to be here again, there is NEVER a waiting period for your music.....It is here 365 days a year to enjoy and love....And so many of us do...Great band, great cover, and great musician....ione marie
Best cover on this song I've heard on you tube! Grew up listening to the Monkees. Always loved this song. Just got done listening to the song on CD to figure out the Bass track. It's a lot of fun too! So I played along with you on You Tube. My 24 yr old son thinks I'm nuts. I simply tell him, (they don't write em like this anymore) Good Job! Great Job on the picking, it's perfect.
VERY nice cover! It's so refreshing to see & hear someone on YouTube NOT over-emoting while they sing; to NOT make exaggerated facial expressions and head/body movements because they think it somehow "adds to the drama" of the performance.....but you're obviously old enough & experienced enought to Know Better.
I've watched countless videos of oftentimes superb players over-doing it, acting the "video star" and detracting from the performance.
@MusicByTheMoon, You're welcome, I wish I knew the tab for the intro part.
I really like the D-Am part in the beginning telling the story of the unhappy rich man in the beginning. The D to a minor 5th is really unusual in a pop/rock song. I think Neil Young might have used that a couple times (Old Man).
Then it switches to a major 5th (A) when he thinks about childhood with Penny whistle bands, beaches and circuses, etc.
This is one of my favorite Monkees' songs and a hidden gem on the underrated "Pisces" Album. This song has a great Byrds/Buffalo Springfield feel to it.
Any chance you could do other Pisces favorites like, "Love is Only Sleeping, Pleasant Valley Sunday, What am I Doing Hangin' Round or Words, "?
Excellent! One of my favorite songs. I'm a music teacher in Thailand and I'm just sittin' here, eating my lunch and enjoying watching Monkees covers on your page. Having an awesome time. Thanks for posting
i haven't heard or thought about this tune in 40 years. 'kind of sounds like an early Steve Stills type of thing... southern cal, anyway. thanks. nice job
This is an amazing cover of perhaps my favorite Monkees tune (although Pleasant Valley Sunday ranks way up there). Thank you for sharing this -- almost nobody knows this song!! Request: The guitarists out here would REALLY appreciate it if you would tell/show us how you're playing the intro piece and the middle fill. The chords of the song are pretty simple, but we can't tell what those notes and bar chords are... (or maybe post tabs somewhere and give us a link? :) Thanks again!!
@carolyn1e1s Actually, the origanl line was " a killing in the market on the wall", meaning wall street, but was changed during a recording session.......
Hey there.. sounds and looks great. But give it a slower intro, and pull the camera out some so we can see you play the guitar and see thechordes fully. Its a great guitar song but the framing shot is cut off. (sorry its the camera man in me) Very cool.
Awesome job! I've been a Monkees fan for 40 years and this song is one of my favorites. I didn't believe anyone could this song any better than Michael Nesmith-My friend you just did. Thanks
Really a nice tune and you play it very well. Your vocals are very cool.
I'd like to hear about your recording process on this tune, It sounds like you've double tracked it. But i'd like to find out how you made such a clean and full bodied tone.
One other inconsistency between the currently printed lyrics and what Mike sings: printed today- he pays for every year he cannot buy back.. Sung by Mike- he pays for it with years he cannot buy back.. My old book agrees with what Mike actually sang. The plot thickens.. Wonder what happens if you play it backwards??
Update: I checked the Monkees website, and it lists the word as war, not lawn.. I suspect that perhaps in 1967, the Monkees publisher may have wanted to avoid controversy-at that time, the war was VERY controversial, and censorship of protest was on the rise.. This is speculation on my part, but your question was VERY interesting.. Thanks!
Thanks, Larry, for turning me onto a Monkees song I had not known. It's wonderful. I THINK I WILL BUY THE ALBUM NOW.......DIGITAL RIGHTS ZEALOTS....ARE YOU LISTENING???
One of my favorite Monkee songs, period. I think this Pisces album was their best, hands down, and I still play it frequently to this day, 40 years later. Should have known you would like this, too! Mike Nesmith is a genius. He would surely love your rendition of this incredible song. I know I do. Great job, Larry.
Larry, this is a great cover and some really great guitar playing...You nailed this one...however you and I differ Pisces is my favorite Monkees album then Headquarters!!! Looking forward to your version of What Am I Doing Hangin' Round or Shades of Gray!!! - Eman
Wow - cannot believe what I am hearing...I think this is my all-time favorite Monkees song. Outstanding! Background vocals are superb...you've covered it to perfection.
Any chance you could post the chords for this song? I've been looking for them and have most of the from just watching you, but your guitar necks dips just enough that I miss a few and I can't be sure.

Chords please!
MusicByTheMoon 10 months ago
@MusicByTheMoon, It's written in the key of D.
The beginning chord progression is kind of unusual, it's basically D to Am, repeat twice
Then it's a cool major shift to: A-G-D-G. (It kind of sounds like CSN ripped this part off for "Southern Cross")
Then it's D-C-D.
The Chorus is: A-G-D, repeat twice, (basically Southern Cross).
Then: A-G-D-G
Then: D-C-G/B-C. (G/B is basically x20030)
Then back to that D part in the intro. I'm not sure about the finger pick, it's a bit tricky.
JohnQ1127 10 months ago
@JohnQ1127 Thank you so much. I knew it was mainly D, but not the rest! Thanks!

Oh, wait a minute...that was those OTHER guys. Hee hee

Glad you asked. When I was a kid, I had the published music book for the album which was sold circa 1967. It said
lawn, not war, in that book. So that's what I went with. No, I am not one to avoid controversy on political subjects.
