it seems many of us with AS follow a similar pattern in our lives. i never fit in growing up but found a talent in motorcycle repair and made many friends with it. he's right, make the transition from weird to eccentric and people will accept you.
I love his story "Look me in the eye" and think his story is more accurate in timeline than his brother's story, but then his brother is the more traumatized and younger sibling who would get dates mixed up.
"Running with scissors" is good too by the brother, but the best parts of the other stories by Augusten, aside from the one referenced here, is the ones about the two brothers together from Augusten.
Great interview. I too was diagnosed at 40...what a revelation! Love your book! Especially the early years and the power line hoax. I did a similar thing with timed escape roots and logistics. Watched over zealous police and fire show up to extinguish a tree and brush fire i ignited in a gravel pit during a thunder storm. The incedent was reported as being caused by lightning. 2 vehicles had to be towed out due due to "random" nail laden debris hidden under the sand...
For a while now I've suspected I have this condition. I stumbled across it on the internet a few years ago and recently learned of your book. I finished reading it and I did find myself relating to some of the awkwardness you described like missing sarcasm.
