Antarctic ice has seen a small overall increase, within the margin of error. Since the 2 polar ice caps are very different, the Arctic ( apart from Greenland ) being sea-based and the southern being mostly over land, their behavior to exterior forcings isn't always the same.

Who said on degree? Anyway, I ran the numbers again--this time with steak since I've never thawed a turkey. from experience, It takes less than 12 hours to thaw a 1" steak in my 36 - 38 deg fridge. IF SEA ICE MELTED THAT FAST, it would take 10 hrs. to melt the 196 BILLION TONS OF ICE.

I'm not a scientist and I don't know how or how fast arctic sea ice melts, but IF it melts at the rate of 1" every 12 hours it would only take 10 hours to melt that much ice over the expanse of arctic ice. The trick is that with the huge amount of surface area you only need to melt 5/6 of an inch. I'm doing math--not science, but I thought the math was interesting.

If anyone can explain the science--I'm all ears.

let's try an experiment...put ONE ice cube in the refrigerator at 33 degrees (one degree above freezing, right?). time how long it takes to melt.

Then, consider 196 billion TONS (your number) of ice in the arctic, where the average temperature is WAY below freezing....maybe we'll say zero degrees. raise the arctic temperature to one degree...time how long it takes all that ice to melt.

You're gonna need calendars that cover a few thousand years.

@thordoggie  - I'm no expert on sea ice, but I doubt that the ice cube in the fridge will simulate the conditions of brine, solar heating, wind, ocean currents, etc. Also, the arctic mean temp has been trending up from 0 C since 1980. And furthermore, the annual variation of sea ice extent swings from 4 - 14 million km2; a difference of 10 m km2 x 1" depth = my 196 billion tons. Of course, even annual ice is much thicker than 1". One study shows a loss of 2.2"/ yr--twice my number.

@thordoggie - Experiment day 3 for the 2 glasses each with 2" deep ice: the ice-brine glass is 95% melted, the ice-only is 25% melted. Also, I just froze 1" deep ice in a 9" x 15" glass baking pan to see how thawing is effected by volume. But I think this formula sheds light on that: quantity of heat transferred = surface area exposed to heat x difference in temperature x "heat transfer coefficient". Plugging in my baking pan with 1 deg Celsius difference, I get 3 1/2 days. We will see.
