@13andincradiblycutt Precise predictions are very difficult in a large, chaotic system - that's why trends are more important. The PIOMAS data shows a dramatic drop in total Arctic ice volume since 1979.
Antarctic ice has seen a small overall increase, within the margin of error. Since the 2 polar ice caps are very different, the Arctic ( apart from Greenland ) being sea-based and the southern being mostly over land, their behavior to exterior forcings isn't always the same.
>meanwhile texas nearly dried up and blew away in 2011. where do you people come from?
Texas has 12" of precip YTD, which is a record, but only 2" down from when it there was 14" in about 1917 and 1955.
>Did you notice that the REALLY important metric, which is ice VOLUME has dropped dramatically even from the well-established low of 2007?
Yes and No. I am commenting on the 2013 IceFreeprediction by these "scientists". That's Simply Ridiculous and it will not happen. They were wrong big time
Looks like their "predictions" are going to be completely wrong, instead of reaching some tipping point and a downward spiral, looks like ice amount is gradually recovering from the 2007 low, who would've thought?
@glenncz Even if you ignore the downward trend in volume and focus only on extent, the 2007 record was nearly reached again. So it's not yet apparent if there's any recovery underway.
shows you how much he know. head of the ice satellite project at NASA in 2008 think the ice very likely could be mostly gone by 2013. We are halfway there and his predictions are undoubtedly wrong! He'll probably get a raise.
In 2013 there really will most surely be a solar outburst from the sun, that will affect the earth's electronics, sea level, cooling, etc. rapidly. An outburst can affect the earth's electronics like an EMP shock.
Unlike the 2012 bullshits, the 2013 solar outbursts are confirmed by numerous astronomies and scientists, worldwide. It's not completely sure that when and how it will hit and affect in the end, but it will happen.

The oceans are being diluted with freash water which will cause small animal life such as plaktons to die off or go deeper into the ocean where they will still die off due to no sunlight.
just curious...when you see a video of chunks of ice breaking off a glacier and falling into the sea...instead of blaming "global warming", did you ever consider that the ice weighs so much it just fell off because of gravity?
juanvoyce...i don't know where you grew up or where you were educated... but take a step backwards for a second. do you HONESTLY believe that 196 billion TONS of ice can melt faster than a 20 pound turkey can thaw? truly you are an idiot... a total idiot... a complete idiot to think so. you're saying canada will melt faster than a postage stamp!!!
again, i hate to use names...but your are the stupidest person i've run into in my life!
oh please!!!!! i want to hear from one more idiot that believes 196 billion TONS of ice will melt faster than a ONE POUND steak will thaw! PLS PLS PLS!!! write to me and use your tremendous intellect and tell me how 196 billion tons of ice can melt faster than a one pound steak...or a twenty pound turkey can thaw.
I really don't get your point of view. how can it be, my 20 pound turkey takes days to thaw at 40 or 50 degrees above refrigerator temps.... but 196 BILLION tons of ice will melt in an hour with a temperature rise of just ONE degree?
Who said on degree? Anyway, I ran the numbers again--this time with steak since I've never thawed a turkey. from experience, It takes less than 12 hours to thaw a 1" steak in my 36 - 38 deg fridge. IF SEA ICE MELTED THAT FAST, it would take 10 hrs. to melt the 196 BILLION TONS OF ICE.
god, i hate to call people names.... you are an idiot!!!! 12 hours to thaw a one inch steak... which MIGHT weigh ONE pound.... and it would take 10 or 12 hours to melt 196 BILLION tons of ice? holy fucking shit! we can melt 196 billionTONS of ice in less time than a one pound steak?
jesus fucking christ!!!! get an education...or keep your ignorance to yourself! god do you have children?
hey anybody and everybody that watches this video... juanvoyce thinks 196 billion TONS of ice will melt, or thaw in not much more time than a 15 pound turkey or a one pound steak!!!!! 196 billion TONS melting as fast as ONE pound of steak or 20 pounds of turkey!
Juanvoyce...honestly, you are the stupidest person i have ever run into in my life! 196 billion tons melting or thawing faster than 20 pounds of turkey... or one pound of steak!?!?!?
god, i'm really sorry to say it... but you HAVE to be the stupidest, most ignorant and uneducated ( or mis-educated) person i have ever run across in my life!!! send all the numbers you want! prove to me 196 billion TONS of ice will melt with a one degree increase in temperature faster than my my 20 pound turkey will thaw with a 50 degree increase in temps. you are an idiot!!!!
@thordoggie I don't think you understand me. I'm not a scientist and I don't know how or how fast arctic sea ice melts, but IF it melts at the rate of 1" every 12 hours it would only take 10 hours to melt that much ice over the expanse of arctic ice. The trick is that with the huge amount of surface area you only need to melt 5/6 of an inch. I'm doing math--not science, but I thought the math was interesting.
let's try an experiment...put ONE ice cube in the refrigerator at 33 degrees (one degree above freezing, right?). time how long it takes to melt.
Then, consider 196 billion TONS (your number) of ice in the arctic, where the average temperature is WAY below freezing....maybe we'll say zero degrees. raise the arctic temperature to one degree...time how long it takes all that ice to melt.
You're gonna need calendars that cover a few thousand years.
@thordoggie - I'm no expert on sea ice, but I doubt that the ice cube in the fridge will simulate the conditions of brine, solar heating, wind, ocean currents, etc. Also, the arctic mean temp has been trending up from 0 C since 1980. And furthermore, the annual variation of sea ice extent swings from 4 - 14 million km2; a difference of 10 m km2 x 1" depth = my 196 billion tons. Of course, even annual ice is much thicker than 1". One study shows a loss of 2.2"/ yr--twice my number.
@thordoggie Following your suggestion, I put a shallow glass container with 1" of ice cubes and 1" of tap water in the fridge. After 12 hours there is only a sliver of ice left. Next I'm going to freeze (2) 2" solid ice layers (tap water); cover one with a brine solution--and find the melt time for the top 1" of each.
I am glad that you'r keeping an open mind and being intellectually honest.
weigh one ice cube before you try your next test.
Then consider, we're talking about 196 BILLION TONS of arctic ice. (your number).
Honestly, the point is, earth has gone through MANY climate changes long before man existed. we are powerless to prevent these changes. you can only believe that if you think man is more powerful than GOD! or, if you don't even believe in God.
@thordoggie - Experiment day 3 for the 2 glasses each with 2" deep ice: the ice-brine glass is 95% melted, the ice-only is 25% melted. Also, I just froze 1" deep ice in a 9" x 15" glass baking pan to see how thawing is effected by volume. But I think this formula sheds light on that: quantity of heat transferred = surface area exposed to heat x difference in temperature x "heat transfer coefficient". Plugging in my baking pan with 1 deg Celsius difference, I get 3 1/2 days. We will see.
if global warming is real ( oh give it up...man can't do a thing to destroy the earth)...well, al gore is one of the biggest contributors to bringing on catastrophic destruction! so why follow him? tell him to burn cow shit to keep his mansion warm and take public transportation to his next doom and gloom public appearance!
u should bicycle to work while al travels the world in limos and private jets!
al...you really believe man is destroying the world? THAN LEAD BY EXAMPLE!!! KILLYOURSELF AND STOP DESTROYING THIS PRECIUOS, FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM!!!! yea al...gonna take up my challenge....you fucking fraud!!!!
the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe. Two new studies show that the greenhouse effect is stronger above the North Pole, and that the waters of the Arctic Ocean are acting like a radiator to heat the region's atmosphere.
it takes me 2 or 3 days to thaw a 20 pound turkey at room temperature. if the average global temperature goes up 2 or 3....even 2 or 3 HUNDRED degrees...how long do you think it will take for millions of tons of arctic ice to melt?
i GUARANTEE the average environmentalist doesn't belive in the power of God, but you think MAN can destroy the earth?
