  • Thumbs up if you were so moved by this beautiful version that you've cried during or shortly after watching this.

  • I've always thought of this song as Rivers' testament to his career as a musician. Like with the lyric 'every time I pinned down what I think I wanted slips away' could be his ever changing mindset to what he wants his music to be seen as. The most obvious is the butterfly metaphor being seen as his constant metamorphosis as an individual. The final lyrics depicting how he said he would be back but never returns could be foreshadowing the end of his pinkerton days into stardom.

  • @thesoftsquid could be overthinking it but the song makes sense to me from that perspective when you listen to it like that.

  • I'm a guy who's been in a relationship with a girl for over a year now, and I can honestly admit that this man has a very beautiful voice.

  • I love this song so much. Great album.

  • No criticizing Rivers' singing, but did AOL fucking auto-tune him like they did his Island in the Sun performance with them?? He doesn't need it. Is it just me, or does anyone else hear it?

  • @intangibleme its just you, you can hear that his voice is very breathy which means its not auto-tuned b/c if it was, he'd have a full sound; hes actually that good but his voice is shit at that point b/c of so much touring and being the only singer in the band plus crap that goes on during tours, his voice is almost gone, listen to the aol session for buddy holly, he cant get the note out with his voice scratching up

  • the fact a harp was used makes this 10x more awesome

  • Let's just evolve along with the band :)

  • Shoot, i accidentally disliked this.

"I'm sorry.......i'm sorry....i'm sorry" - 2 minutes and twenty nine seconds into the video.

  • damn! you vevo for disliking this

  • hahhahha who the fuck would dislike this masterpiece

  • to put an end to all the lyrical debate out there, this song is clearly about a boy who catches a butterfly and by keeping it in the jar, the butterfly withers away and dies. it has absolutely no implications to love whatsoever.

ps. for those who have no sense of humor, i'm kidding. haha

  • this is better than the studio version! phenominal and very very sad :(

  • why's he having such trouble staying on time?

  • um yeah...google "pinkerton tour" people!!! Coming soon!!!

  • @chraddam Its called the Blinkerton Tour

  • Rivers...I miss you.

    Please come back...

  • Yep, pinkerton. Easily.

Cried like a little girl to this song after me and my girl broke up. Yep, i said it.

  • @SgtSkidoosh hahahahhahaha sorry thats a sad comment but it still made me laugh

  • love this song......

  • this is their best song that has the most emotion in it. i mean how many other bands can come up with a song that explains how sorry they are with out it being not sad, or not depressing? rivers is the only peron in history who is able to put emotion into his songs and not care, cuz he knows that everybody has those days and that it is ok to sing about what you care for and live for, so lits home he comes back out of hiphop and goes back to emotional and with guitars and not so heavy chords.

  • someone missed the like button

  • *applaud*

  • Amazing!

  • This was always one of my top 10 songs. I used to put this song on repeat for hours at a time. Still Amazes me here how much he looks like Ben folds though lol

  • beautiful o.o

  • This song is so great. Reminds me of the good ol' days when I was younger...

  • Stop whining about pinkerton. Every band has 1 crowning album. Then for every other album that they make you cant just compare it to the best one, i highly doubt they will ever do something like this again, and their new stuff is not that bad. Not hapf as good as this, but good.

  • this is so beautiful it literally made me cry

  • This is a great track.

  • So beautiful

  • also the harp mimicking the vocal line is kinda overkill.

  • isnt this the version on downlaod to donate for haiti?

  • three thumbs up!

  • woody allen.

well, at least we know he can still sing like he did on pinkerton.

good stuff. this is rare...don't see much performance of Butterfly

  • omfg this is so beautiful

  • HOw is this about a one night stand?

  • @skatingwoodenguitars

the album is about the protagonist pinkerton being a misogynist

what do you think this song is about?

  • @freepoco2

Isn't the album loosely based on the opera "Madame Butterfly"?

  • Yes.

  • How is it not?

  • @skatingwoodenguitars He actually said he made false promises to a girl and then he realized he could never keep them so he wrote this song for her

  • pinkerton=best weezer album of all

  • The most beautiful song ever written about a one night stand...

  • You do realize the entire album is based on Madame Butterfly, right? this song isn't about a one night stand.

  • The album is not based on Madame Butterfly lyrically, sorry to disappoint you.

  • @Mattman5465 "The album touched upon various life experiences of Cuomo and included subjects like groupies, dysfunctional relationships, a fan letter, identity and former girlfriends."

  • @Mattman5465 It most certainly IS about a one night stand. Perhaps you should read a little deeper into the lyrics?

  • @kmd29 Are you kidding me

  • @RusselMuttly You need it spelled out for you? He caught a lovely butterfly - that's the girl. When he woke up and looked at her, he feels the guilt which is why he starts apologizing. Next verse, Smell you on my hand for days... If Im a dog then you're a bitch - This signifies he is talking about a woman since a female dog is a bitch. And of course the last verse, he told her he would call her or come back again but he won't and he is sorry. There is more to it but use your head please.

  • @kmd29 I think its about the play Madame Butterfly, or so I heard. An American man falls in love with a Japanese woman, promises he would come back for her, but goes to America and falls in love with an American woman, and never returns to the Japanese woman.

  • Pinkerton is my favorite Weezer album by far. That being said, its not coming back. Enjoy it, its great but dont close your self off to the new stuff. Rivers is exploring having fun and making some decent music in the process.

  • @jonmarc1980 Thats the best defense for the new albums I've heard yet. Your right. But I still dont like it. Lol

  • @jonmarc1980 actually they are releasing pinkerton deluxe edition which is bound to have 4 or 5 new songs so yea

  • @jonmarc1980 thats funny you say that. i saw weezer on guitar center and he was saying pinkerton was a big down fall for them, that his fans basically hated him after that album since he did open up in a lot those songs. but i liked it too(:

  • @jonmarc1980 I agree as long as they are making music they want to make and still enjoy what they do, they should keep doing it. It's like listening to any other artist who is part of a different genre in my eyes. I know Pinkerton is most Weezer fan's favorite album, but to ask for that would be almost traumatizing for Rivers if that was really how he still felt about his life. I don't blame him looking for new genres, Pinkerton breaks my heart to think he still felt that way about anything..

  • past 3 albums weren't bad.... though raditude was easily the worst

the point: take a couple years off, bring back pinkerton #2

  • @risingfrost You be crazy!! I think raditude is a great album.

  • Pinkerton era Weezer = <3

  • YES!!!!!

    LOVE IT

  • Fucking awesome.

    I loved pinkerton,

wish they would put out another album similar to it.

  • @Astonadada

wat do u expect, they got old, became less "grunge/punk rock", more boring, but still, ratitude has its moments

  • @idobbsutube

    it does have a few moments, but it feels like they took a step in the wrong direction;

compared to TRA. "Dreamin" and "Greatest Man" is the most adventurous Rivers has been. Now we have " In The Mall" :C

  • @Astonadada In the mall was written by Patrick Wilson(drummer) Raditude is awesome, but not as great as the rest, Rivers is just trying out different genres of music. He may return but I doubt soon because he seems to enjoy his direction right now.

  • @Double0hobo I enjoyed Raditude in the "summer fun" sorta way with its catchy pop melody's. It just lacked the emotion and creativity I loved from rivers & and the guys. I also didn't like that the album had a LOT more collabortion than previous albums. I love this band, but they are starting to turn from a genius, emotion filled freight train of nerd Alt/ pop rock, to sounding like a VERY generic pop band. Rivers was well on his way to becoming the next Brain Wilson, what happened? :(

  • @Astonadada right, there were only 3 songs that were made by one person. But Alternative music was more popular in the 90's and so one could argue that they were always a pop-band. Raditude was their worst album but I still love it.

  • @Double0hobo Weezer is a pop band.

The thing that made them different is that is was really good pop! filled with emotion and interesting themes. I liked Raditude for what it was.

  • @Astonadada Exactly, I mean I miss the awesome meanings of their older songs too, and their more alternative songs too.

  • @Astonadada

yeah its called Make Believe dipshit.

  • @cenasgay9111

Make believe was a solid effort, but its weak production and forced emotional lyrics keep it from being great. Make believe with Red's production/enthusiasm would be amazing.

  • this is pretty amazing.

and as far as the music, melody, lyrics are concerned, it's perfectly executed beauty.

  • oh god i miss 90s rivers cuomo. gorgeous performance, a sign of hope for Weezer.

  • classic

  • Classic. Awesome.

  • Hopefully playing some of these songs and going over them for the reissue of pinkerton will show these guys how awesome they were and inspire them to take on another album with that style.

  • atticus: that would be cool, but do you think that Rivers would be able to do another album like that? That album was filled with personal angst. He seems much more stable these days because of his meditation practice.

  • @atticus11235

    exactly

  • I just Love it !!!

That was the first song I learned to play on my guitar!

  • Amazing...

  • he can sing like on pinkerton fantastic

  • Love it! Harp works great here. What a wonderful take on this song.

  • its just perfect! =W=....Rivers thanks for wear ur glasses again =D

  • Wow! That's awesome. The harp works great here!

  • Really cool! I like how the harp works with this song.

  • This is just fantastic.

  • Just amazing

  • ...autotune anyone? ending in particular

  • lmfao

  • sounds very natural to me..

  • dont bet on it

  • the part i'm talking about is the "i'm sorry" bit at the end... it seems kind of mechanical and one-toned to me... not like rivers' natural vibrato on the record version.

anyhow you guys may be right, and i may be imagining it, but watch all the other AOL videos (i want you to)... they're all autotuned to fuck, no question. so why would they remove it just for this?

  • There is no autotune on this track.

  • SUCH a breath of fresh air after all of that Raditude, Red Album crap.....PINKERTON ERA WEEZER!!!

  • perfect! it's sooo pinkerton

  • So nice.

  • amazing performance

  • So beautiful.

  • Perfect

  • so good

  • amazing, beautiful

  • Holy Carp YES!

  • i love you

will you upload the rest ?
