I've always thought of this song as Rivers' testament to his career as a musician. Like with the lyric 'every time I pinned down what I think I wanted slips away' could be his ever changing mindset to what he wants his music to be seen as. The most obvious is the butterfly metaphor being seen as his constant metamorphosis as an individual. The final lyrics depicting how he said he would be back but never returns could be foreshadowing the end of his pinkerton days into stardom.
No criticizing Rivers' singing, but did AOL fucking auto-tune him like they did his Island in the Sun performance with them?? He doesn't need it. Is it just me, or does anyone else hear it?
@intangibleme its just you, you can hear that his voice is very breathy which means its not auto-tuned b/c if it was, he'd have a full sound; hes actually that good but his voice is shit at that point b/c of so much touring and being the only singer in the band plus crap that goes on during tours, his voice is almost gone, listen to the aol session for buddy holly, he cant get the note out with his voice scratching up
to put an end to all the lyrical debate out there, this song is clearly about a boy who catches a butterfly and by keeping it in the jar, the butterfly withers away and dies. it has absolutely no implications to love whatsoever.
ps. for those who have no sense of humor, i'm kidding. haha
this is their best song that has the most emotion in it. i mean how many other bands can come up with a song that explains how sorry they are with out it being not sad, or not depressing? rivers is the only peron in history who is able to put emotion into his songs and not care, cuz he knows that everybody has those days and that it is ok to sing about what you care for and live for, so lits home he comes back out of hiphop and goes back to emotional and with guitars and not so heavy chords.
This was always one of my top 10 songs. I used to put this song on repeat for hours at a time. Still Amazes me here how much he looks like Ben folds though lol
This was always one of my top 10 songs. I used to put this song on repeat for hours at a time. Still Amazes me here how much he looks like Ben folds though lol
Stop whining about pinkerton. Every band has 1 crowning album. Then for every other album that they make you cant just compare it to the best one, i highly doubt they will ever do something like this again, and their new stuff is not that bad. Not hapf as good as this, but good.
@Mattman5465 "The album touched upon various life experiences of Cuomo and included subjects like groupies, dysfunctional relationships, a fan letter, identity and former girlfriends."
@RusselMuttly You need it spelled out for you? He caught a lovely butterfly - that's the girl. When he woke up and looked at her, he feels the guilt which is why he starts apologizing. Next verse, Smell you on my hand for days... If Im a dog then you're a bitch - This signifies he is talking about a woman since a female dog is a bitch. And of course the last verse, he told her he would call her or come back again but he won't and he is sorry. There is more to it but use your head please.
@kmd29 I think its about the play Madame Butterfly, or so I heard. An American man falls in love with a Japanese woman, promises he would come back for her, but goes to America and falls in love with an American woman, and never returns to the Japanese woman.
Pinkerton is my favorite Weezer album by far. That being said, its not coming back. Enjoy it, its great but dont close your self off to the new stuff. Rivers is exploring having fun and making some decent music in the process.
@jonmarc1980 thats funny you say that. i saw weezer on guitar center and he was saying pinkerton was a big down fall for them, that his fans basically hated him after that album since he did open up in a lot those songs. but i liked it too(:
@jonmarc1980 I agree as long as they are making music they want to make and still enjoy what they do, they should keep doing it. It's like listening to any other artist who is part of a different genre in my eyes. I know Pinkerton is most Weezer fan's favorite album, but to ask for that would be almost traumatizing for Rivers if that was really how he still felt about his life. I don't blame him looking for new genres, Pinkerton breaks my heart to think he still felt that way about anything..
@Astonadada In the mall was written by Patrick Wilson(drummer) Raditude is awesome, but not as great as the rest, Rivers is just trying out different genres of music. He may return but I doubt soon because he seems to enjoy his direction right now.
@Double0hobo I enjoyed Raditude in the "summer fun" sorta way with its catchy pop melody's. It just lacked the emotion and creativity I loved from rivers & and the guys. I also didn't like that the album had a LOT more collabortion than previous albums. I love this band, but they are starting to turn from a genius, emotion filled freight train of nerd Alt/ pop rock, to sounding like a VERY generic pop band. Rivers was well on his way to becoming the next Brain Wilson, what happened? :(
@Astonadada right, there were only 3 songs that were made by one person. But Alternative music was more popular in the 90's and so one could argue that they were always a pop-band. Raditude was their worst album but I still love it.
Make believe was a solid effort, but its weak production and forced emotional lyrics keep it from being great. Make believe with Red's production/enthusiasm would be amazing.
What sucks even more about Weezer is that they're SO TERRIBLE NOW. But they manage to keep doing even BETTER versions of they're old songs. Like this.... One of the most beautiful versions of this song I've ever heard. I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS LIVE, if it wasn't for the fact that I'd have to hear them play songs from they're last 3 records. Fuck that shit. They played a free show in SF, and I wouldn't even go to that.
Hopefully playing some of these songs and going over them for the reissue of pinkerton will show these guys how awesome they were and inspire them to take on another album with that style.
atticus: that would be cool, but do you think that Rivers would be able to do another album like that? That album was filled with personal angst. He seems much more stable these days because of his meditation practice.
the part i'm talking about is the "i'm sorry" bit at the end... it seems kind of mechanical and one-toned to me... not like rivers' natural vibrato on the record version.
anyhow you guys may be right, and i may be imagining it, but watch all the other AOL videos (i want you to)... they're all autotuned to fuck, no question. so why would they remove it just for this?
Thumbs up if you were so moved by this beautiful version that you've cried during or shortly after watching this.
