  • This is something I find really interesting. I'm not at all surprised that the majority are music videos posted by the artist or label, but noticing that this is from LFYT 2007, I do wonder if the ratio of self-produced videos to professionally produced ones has risen in the aftermath of people like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black, who became world-famous via YouTube. It would be interesting to see how both the ratio of videos in general has changed as well as the popularity trends.

  • There are a number of different combinations for the search criteria. If we constantly change the criteria and these themes continue to repeat, then my initial answer above is more solid.

On a side note, I was going to make a video of me doing this but YouTube has had problems this entire week.

  • First page of results after I did my market research from above:

XXX PORN XXX, IMVU, Free hugs campaign, Miss Teen USA South Carolina, My webcam tease, Ronaldinho: Touch of Gold, Quick Change Artists, Chris Crocker, Dont forget the little pussy, Chris Angel Walks on Water, Soulja Boy, Numa numa, Naked Chicks, America's Cheer, Sexy Bikini Contest, Paris Hilton auditioning topless, video porno de guatemala, Here Without You

    Sex/porn/nudity/looks are a sizable portion

  • Response to "Popular Videos: Music"

I used the advance search method (market research methodology) from this video to answer the question, "How does YouTube define entertainment?"

On the advanced search page, I made some assumptions in my search. I searched for short videos, any language, Entertainment category, sorted by View count, and uploaded anytime.

  • Reasoning for my search criteria

Short: Entertainment generally captures our attention quickly

Language: I believe most of youtube's entertainment is visual humor, so language barriers are not important

    Entertainment category: Duh

View count: I believe popularity and entertainment are intertwined

Uploaded anytime: Didn't see a reason to specify a time period.

  • This video clearly shows the methodology of taking statistics, and studying a number of videos on YouTube to draw the conclusion that many of the videos on YouTube grab peoples attention because they are instantly recognizable from mainstream media. If the video is not pulled directly from mainstream media, it is at least a reflection of what is being seen in popular culture. As YouTube has shown us, things in our culture become popular because they are entertaining.

  • Or are understood to be "entertaining" using a set of criteria dominant within mainstream culture.

  • But as video 9 of this tour has shown, this is not necessarily a good thing. Because entertainment for entertainment sake has become such a predominate aspect of our culture and especially on YouTube, people are losing depth and meaning.

  • Because entertainment for entertainment sake has become such a predominate aspect of our culture and especially on YouTube, people are losing depth and meaning.

  • What would be the other reason to have entertainment (besides for entertainment's sake)? What other things might one want from a video on YouTube>

  • i like the part where it says "popularity anal"

  • TOUR #2 ENTERTAINMENT: On YouTube we are entertained by what already entertains us: mainstream popular culture produced by skilled professionals in familiar forms. On YouTube we are entertained by what we've already seen and heard before--on TV, radio, cellphones--we just get more control here. We can watch when we want, we can comment, parody, or mash up what we already know and like. YouTube effortlessly refers to itself, and other mainstream forms. • The video clarifies what we already know: YouTube's reliance on corporate and mainstream media, with some attention to user talent. How do you feel about this state of things?

  • Nice for using Hot Hot Heat's "Talk to Me, Dance With Me"; can't really say much else interesting about the video.
