I too consider this a True Mario game, after all it was made by Mr. Miyamoto. I used to love it first time I was it in Super Mario All Stars and I think the GBA version is such an amazing game, loved it.

I thouroughly enjoy Mario 2, Personally, and have played just about every version known to man (including DokiDokiPanic). I'm kinda glad they replaced the original SMB2, however I would Have liked to see an alternative cart or add on or something featuring the japanese SMB2. other than that, I believe SMB2 was a very creative game and a very important staple in SMB history.

There's actually even MORE reason for SMB2 to be considered a Mario game than you might think. Not many people know this, but the game that would ultimately become Doki Doki Panic was originally intended to be a co-op Mario game developed by Kensuke Tanabe and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto. It was retooled into Doki Doki Panic when Fuji TV asked Nintendo to make a game for the Yume Kojo 87 Festival. So, you see, it was always meant to be a Mario game right from its conception!
Actually, it's a common misconception when people say that the game was just a dream. Because at the beginning in the story it says mario say something in his dream that needed help and when he woke up, mario, luigi, toad, and peach found a cave during a picnic to find the same world. The dream at the end refers to the fact that mario's dreams are now clear of the evil that lived in the world of the subcon.
I was only 5 when the USA version of SMB2 came out, so can't say I minded that it was so different. Also, Japan's version is far more difficult in my opinion. I can beat SMB2 USA and still can. I HAVE beaten the Lost Levels, but I don't think I can anymore. That game is incredibly difficult at certain points.

@CobraVegeta Yeah I grew up with the S/NES and the SEGA Genisis. But ever since the PS1 I've been a SONY fan mainly. But the SNES has my 2nd favorite library of games after the PS1.
I also like those 3rd party companies, Capcom in particular for making Megaman (which was my favorite game series when I was a kid and to this day is my favorite game series besides Resident Evil, which is also a Capcom game.
The game is good. I enjoy it but a lie is a lie. Mario 2 is not a mario game. For one thing it's far more difficult than almost any other mario game out there. Which is funny to me considering it was released to hold us over until 3's north american debut because the actual 2 was thought to be too hard for us crappy playing Americans.
@Luigi84289 Mouser made appearances in the mario TV show almost all the mario 2 cast did back in the day aside from Super mario bros when the show was new the only other game with mario in America was mario 2.
I own (owned as a kid also) both Super Mario 1 and 3 but borrowed Super Mario 2 from a friend. I liked all three Mario games for what they were. Yes, Super Mario 2 was different but still a great game. In some ways number 2 was even my favorite.
To be perfectly honest, turning Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game was really an inspired idea. I'm probably in the almost invisible minority who didn't like the first SMB. To me, it was boring an unbeatable. SMB2 fit that bill perfectly.

I find it ironic that NOA rebranded Doki Doki Panic as Mario 2 because the Japanese Mario 2 was not only too similar to its predecessor, but also considered too difficult. Call me retarded, but Doki Doki Panic was pretty damn hard, even going back to it as an adult. It really shows how our sense of difficulty in games has become vastly warped in the past couple decades. "Difficult" games these days treat the player like a lobotomized retard, while back in the day they were positively sadistic.

How the fuck can you include games bundled with consoles on a list of best-selling games? That might show you how popular the console was, but not everyone who bought those consoles necessarily played the game bundled with it (who the hell plays Wii Sports? No, seriously, I mean who plays it and actually considers it one of the greatest games of all time destined to become a classic?)
@xaphon89 Wii Sports wasn't bundled with the Wii in Japan. That means some of those sales had to be separate from the console. Maybe that's not enough to say it deserves the #1 spot, but it is enough to say that some people did buy it and intend to play it.
@mjc0961 You have a point, although sales of games in the US are typically much greater than those in Japan for many games, simply because there are more people in this country (and arguably better marketing in the US). There are, of course, exceptions for Japan-centric games and such. I think statistics should be available of how many people bought a game separate from a console, and, more importantly, how frequently people really play a bundled console game. It's hard to find such statistics.
On the Wii you couldn't find such statistics of how many people actually played it. You probably could on the 360 or PS3 though, what with its nature of wanting you online on your account all the time.
But yeah you have a point too. Unless they can really say for certain how many copies actually sold on their own instead of the game just tagging along with the Wii purchase, they shouldn't say it's the highest selling game.

Hm, so I wonder what would have happened if Super Mario Bros. 2 was never made. We would have a lot of those stables in the Mario series missing. Plus, I can only imagine how Peach would play in Melee and Brawl without some of her moves.

You can say that Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) is canon or you could say it's not canon.
Some people could say the same thing about Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (USA)/Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan).
Either way, I enjoy playing them & have for many years. I actually like Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) better than Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.

@RetroJoystick I definitely prefer my Xbox 360 and PS3 over my Wii, but Nintendo make great games. However, their last three home consoles have been nothing but great games from Nintendo and crappy third-party support, which equates to only a 2 or 3 great games per year.

@CobraVegeta Yeah I grew up with the S/NES and the SEGA Genisis. But ever since the PS1 I've been a SONY fan mainly. But the SNES has my 2nd favorite library of games after the PS1.
I also like those 3rd party companies, Capcom in particular for making Megaman (which was my favorite game series when I was a kid and to this day is my favorite game series besides Resident Evil, which is also a Capcom game.

The game is good. I enjoy it but a lie is a lie. Mario 2 is not a mario game. For one thing it's far more difficult than almost any other mario game out there. Which is funny to me considering it was released to hold us over until 3's north american debut because the actual 2 was thought to be too hard for us crappy playing Americans.

I own (owned as a kid also) both Super Mario 1 and 3 but borrowed Super Mario 2 from a friend. I liked all three Mario games for what they were. Yes, Super Mario 2 was different but still a great game. In some ways number 2 was even my favorite.

I find it ironic that NOA rebranded Doki Doki Panic as Mario 2 because the Japanese Mario 2 was not only too similar to its predecessor, but also considered too difficult. Call me retarded, but Doki Doki Panic was pretty damn hard, even going back to it as an adult. It really shows how our sense of difficulty in games has become vastly warped in the past couple decades. "Difficult" games these days treat the player like a lobotomized retard, while back in the day they were positively sadistic.

How the fuck can you include games bundled with consoles on a list of best-selling games? That might show you how popular the console was, but not everyone who bought those consoles necessarily played the game bundled with it (who the hell plays Wii Sports? No, seriously, I mean who plays it and actually considers it one of the greatest games of all time destined to become a classic?)

@xaphon89 Wii Sports wasn't bundled with the Wii in Japan. That means some of those sales had to be separate from the console. Maybe that's not enough to say it deserves the #1 spot, but it is enough to say that some people did buy it and intend to play it.

@mjc0961 You have a point, although sales of games in the US are typically much greater than those in Japan for many games, simply because there are more people in this country (and arguably better marketing in the US). There are, of course, exceptions for Japan-centric games and such. I think statistics should be available of how many people bought a game separate from a console, and, more importantly, how frequently people really play a bundled console game. It's hard to find such statistics.

On the Wii you couldn't find such statistics of how many people actually played it. You probably could on the 360 or PS3 though, what with its nature of wanting you online on your account all the time.
But yeah you have a point too. Unless they can really say for certain how many copies actually sold on their own instead of the game just tagging along with the Wii purchase, they shouldn't say it's the highest selling game.
