From my observation, many Chileans have always wanted to be white. Sure, there is a small pocket of European descendants in their country, but most have national identity crisis. Thousands of Europeans and North Americans travel to their country for its admirable policies, but they get hyped into believing that they are accepted as European. When in fact they are not. Even the ones who look mainly white have Amerindian blood. Yet, they are too ignorant to ignore it.
