The "National Indigenous Festival" (Festival Nacional Indígena) which honors the memory of Hayuya and the Taino heritage is celebrated annually on November in the town of Jayuya, Puerto Rico. This year will take place on November 19-22, 2009 making it the 40th year of this festival. There is a monument of Hayuya, the only one of its kind to be dedicated to a Taino Cacique, located in Jayuya's Cultural Center next to a Taino tomb.

Muy orgulloso. Pero estoy conciente que parte de mi vino de Espan~a y El Africa. Me encanta ver gente en mi Borinquen celebrando la herencia taina. Hace falta ya que mucha atencion siempre se le ha dado la la africana y la espanola. Pero, yo he estado en Espan~a y tambien vi muchas caras que me recordaban de mi gente puertorriquen~a. El resto tenian rasgos negros y otros ojos azules. Porque se les cataloga como indigenas? Porque la ley aqui en USA indica que una persona que tenga por lo menos un cuarto de sangre indigena, puede ser indigena. No importa si ya esta mesclado con otras razas. Al fin y al cabo, los decendientes de la tribu original no se parecen a sus antepasados. Pero, persiste la identidad de la tribu. Pero Puerto Rico es un caso diferente. Yo estoy orgulloso de mi sangre taina.

Pero, a lo que quiero llegar es que el algumento de que algunos son muy negros o blancos para ser tainos no tiene na' que ver con la realidad indigena de hoy dia. Hi, I am a black Puerto Rican. Mixed actually. But I am actually surprised by this video. I think it is great how much of the Taino culture has survived over the hundreds of years since colonialism. I think it's great. We are told that the culture is completely gone. Yet it is so amazing how much people know and find out amidst this denial. Also, why do some people specificaly look for videos pertaining to blacks or tainos in Puerto Rico just to say stupid stuff?

Tainos are related to Arawakans family but there's difference during migrated arawakan people spoke the true arawak language or maipurean family but when they migrated to puerto rico or other carribean islands the language slightly changed mixed into little nahuatl and other, just like timucua and 5 nations in florida mixed into muscogean language.... etc etc u know what i mean?

I think it's pretty cool, they are playing native Taino instruments (including the mayahuacan, which giovanni hidalgo uses in his cd time shifter and sounds awesome) Obviously they can't do things naked cuz that would be illegal now in PR and they can't use PR cotora feathers cuz they're endangered and they are reviving their past which has been forgotten, that is what native americans do as well in the US, so please dont hate the player, hate the game and go suck on a lemon.

The studies were taken from samples of 800 familes all over the island. Other independent studies have been done for medical reseach. All show a much greater indigenous contribution then ever expected. Most of us are tri-racial, it's about time that the Taino element was represented.

plumvine, there's nothing wrong with authetnic representation of indigenous culture,but these neo-tainos are as "authentic" as what we see in the American Southwest with fake representations of "indigenous" culture at truck stops. And as for harming anyone, let me say this...Halloween doesn't harm anyone either, but even my 7 year old twin daughters don't believe they are really fairy princesses. THAT'S the difference. I can put a loin cloth on my poodle. That does not make her a Taino.

I think they deserve some respect, especially when they are not around to represent themselves. I DON'T deny that some people in the Caribbean are in some part Taino, but NO WAY are they a majority on ANY Island, except of course for Manhattan Island (and the Bronx). Be well...

Agui, y si eso no fuera suficiente hipocrecia, recruerdate que cuando los Europeos llegaron al caribe, los "tainos" estaban DESNUDOS. No llevaban taparrabos de cuero porque no habian ANIMALES en la isla. Y tampoco llevaban plumas de pavo real en el culo porque NO habian pavos reales en la isla. razor, my comments are not findings or beliefs. the first europeans to arrive in the caribbean WROTE that the "natives" were short, dark and naked. That is NOT my imagination. You see them in paintings with "taparrabos" because the custom of the world then was to NOT display people naked in paintings. And remember that there were NO mammals on the islands to skin and make suede loin cloths out of.

The "National Indigenous Festival" (Festival Nacional Indígena) which honors the memory of Hayuya and the Taino heritage is celebrated annually on November in the town of Jayuya, Puerto Rico. This year will take place on November 19-22, 2009 making it the 40th year of this festival. There is a monument of Hayuya, the only one of its kind to be dedicated to a Taino Cacique, located in Jayuya's Cultural Center next to a Taino tomb.

Sangre Taina, Sangre Espanola (que de por si ya venia con sangre arabe, judia y celta) y sangre Africana. Me rehuso a negar la una o la otra. Pero tambien se que en Puerto Rico hay gente que celebra mas su sangre europe mientras otros la africana. Entonces, por que no la taina. Muy orgulloso. Pero estoy conciente que parte de mi vino de Espan~a y El Africa. Me encanta ver gente en mi Borinquen celebrando la herencia taina. Hace falta ya que mucha atencion siempre se le ha dado la la africana y la espanola. Pero, yo he estado en Espan~a y tambien vi muchas caras que me recordaban de mi gente puertorriquen~a. El resto tenian rasgos negros y otros ojos azules. Porque se les cataloga como indigenas? Porque la ley aqui en USA indica que una persona que tenga por lo menos un cuarto de sangre indigena, puede ser indigena. No importa si ya esta mesclado con otras razas. Al fin y al cabo, los decendientes de la tribu original no se parecen a sus antepasados. Pero, persiste la identidad de la tribu. Pero Puerto Rico es un caso diferente. Yo estoy orgulloso de mi sangre taina.

Bueno....aqui con mis dos chavitos. Yo he trabajado para organizaciones indigenas en Alaska y hasta fui parte de un drumming circle con un amigo de la tribu Haidatsa de Montana? No recuerdo bien. Pero, a lo que quiero llegar es que el algumento de que algunos son muy negros o blancos para ser tainos no tiene na' que ver con la realidad indigena de hoy dia. Yo era maestro en una escuelita de indigenas alasken~os y solo dos o tres tenian lo que se puede catalogar como "verdaderas caras indias"

Hi, I am a black Puerto Rican. Mixed actually. But I am actually surprised by this video. I think it is great how much of the Taino culture has survived over the hundreds of years since colonialism. I think it's great. We are told that the culture is completely gone. Yet it is so amazing how much people know and find out amidst this denial. Also, why do some people specificaly look for videos pertaining to blacks or tainos in Puerto Rico just to say stupid stuff?

Tainos are related to Arawakans family but there's difference during migrated arawakan people spoke the true arawak language or maipurean family but when they migrated to puerto rico or other carribean islands the language slightly changed mixed into little nahuatl and other, just like timucua and 5 nations in florida mixed into muscogean language.... etc etc u know what i mean?

Ademas la persona que no sabe como comprobar lo antes visto, puede buscar las cronicas como le aconsejaron y buscar libros de la historia de Puerto Rico y las Antillas, porque esto es real. Sino pueden viajar a Puerto Rico y conocer a estas personas y aclarar sus dudas.

El video me parece excelente, se puede observar que estas personas son muy profesionales en la forma en representan la cultura taina y estoy de acuerdo con un comentario que hicieron anteriormente refiriendose a las cronicas debido a que las he leido y es notable que son muy autenticos y originales.

obvio ignorante si te vas a las cronicas de fray bartolome de las casas, fray ramon pane canto de flogisto podras saber lo que al relatar los cronistas se te hace realidad frente a las imagenes que ves. El hombre que olvida su historia y su pasado no sabe quien carajo es.
