God bless these guys for letting me enjoy their sense of humour, their talent and their joie de vivre

  • So note-perfect, it's tempting to believe that the sound comes from the original recording - meant as a compliment! Wish the TV director had given us camera angles of the singers; perhaps he was unfamiliar with the music.

  • linda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Qué buena onda tenía el viejito!!!!

  • This song was used briefly as background music in "Good Morning Vietnam".It was part of the "Ray Conniff featurette" they did during the film.Great stuff.

  • For your information, I am just defending a great man and his music, so therefore I have a right to voice my opinion as well. I have the right of freedom of speech as well as you and I don't need to put down people to make me feel empowered or use filthy gutter language as is so common these days to get my point across.

  • I think Ray Conniff was a wonderful music arranger. His enthusiasm is so infecious and this arrangement of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is one of his best.

  • What an adorable little guy. His enthusiasm is so infecious. We grew up listening to Ray Coniff music. He always did such great arrangements of songs.

  • I sorry this is good playing and all but damn this is just corny as hell.

  • Forgive me, but what was the point of the guy moving around? Is he a Conductor or other?

  • @FiringOnAllEight must be missing on SEVERAL cylinders to not understand the guy moving around - RAY CONNIFF - is part of the show. Yes he is a conductor or other. From 1956-2001 he arranged & orchestrated every note played on 1200 songs featured on over 100 albums. He was the best arranger/conductor of the 20th century, as his 70 million album sales indicate. He was a modern pied piper! chuck

  • This is the original Columbia 1958 (? may be wrong about the year) recording, not live performance audio, which does not minimise the effect - it is a beautiful version of this song.

  • Comment removed

  • @615000km Shame on me for not being better informed - I removed my prior comment. Please accept my apology & appreciation for your astute hearing. chuck

  • Thanks for posting.

  • I am getting a little bored with the level of debate here. Too many unrefined, uneducated types unable to take part in a rational discussion. Too many f-words and insults flying about. But it does tell me about the lack of artistic and cultural maturity among easy listening fans. It's very shocking, confirming that Ray Conniff fans lack sophistication, a fact that Conniff knew while he peddled his muzak to them.

  • Wow, awful! I understand why this music is used while torturing prisoners in Iraq.

  • @AntiConniff If u dont like the music dont listen to it! what a fukin concept! Honestly do you think you're making new friends by being a giant dickwad to a dead man who was one of the greatest bandleaders of all time? Get a fukin life dude.

  • @danman745 I wouldn't want friends who like Ray Conniff's music. It would indicate they have no taste. If I could not trust their judgment in music, I could not trust them on anything. I force myself to listen to Ray Conniff to try to figure out how someone could possibly like music that is so bland and bloodless. It's a mystery, but my guess is that there are plenty of people who enjoy music that's nothing more than a background buzz, muzak in other words.

  • @AntiConniff You're the one with no taste. I have a broad appreciation for all types of music, classical, opera, easy listening, rock etc. It's too bad you are so critical and can't appreciate such great musicality. Why do you even listen? It mus be so you can find something to badmouth about. As they saying goes, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all". God Bless Ray Conifff and all his wonderful music.

  • @dinyjo As the saying goes? Which saying is that? This is an open forum. All comments are welcome. Are you trying to silence those who do not like Ray Conniff's music?

  • @AntiConniff IRead my quotes and you can see what saying I referred to. It would be better if YouTube just allowed postive comments instead of the mean, hateful rude comments by people like yourself.

  • @dinyjo If you are against freedom of expression, that is a more serious problem than my criticism of Ray Conniff. I have no problem with you posting negative comments about the music or opinions you dislike. Your attitude of "like what I like or shut up" is very dangerous.

  • @AntiConniff

Ray Conniff sounds like a cross between James Last and Andre Rieu.

    Mediocre to say the least.

Thank god we still have Gibson guitars to listen to if we want quality sound.

  • @Frank5133 The Conniff phenomenon is difficult to understand. The man sold millions and millions of records by turning other musicians' music into easy listening. Don't really want to knock the guy or his listeners but Conniff, Last, etc. seem to be nothing more than a celebration of the bland.

  • Ray Conniff one of a kind musician ... we will miss his beautiful music ...

  • @uptrendvideo2000 There are millions of us who do not miss the master of muzak. This brings back memories of supermarket shopping aisles, dentist waiting rooms, elevators, and male vanity wanting to hide itself in a cheap silver wig. Merry Christmas!

  • Despite a previous comment to the contrary, this performance does indeed feature a synched sound track straight from the LP 'S Awful Nice. Although the players in the video may have been playing the chart in the studio, the sound track from the LP was also being played into the studio simultaneously. At the time of this recording, technology hadn't advanced sufficiently to allow Ray to transport his sound as easily as his later live performances. It's all about cost.

  • @sprROINGG You've just burst my bubble. I never thought Ray would put out a product not 100% authentic. :( I suppose the product was authentic for the audience, just not for the video that was sold later.

  • BEWARE READERS: blizzardman59 and AntiConniff is trolling the Conniff videos, with the sole purpose of insulting and denigrating Joseph Raymond Conniff and his music. He is both rude and distasteful....and loves the attention. You are advised to ignore the troll.

  • i can't help but be reminded of good morning vietnam

  • beautiful

  • 8 People was lady gaga fans,.. ROFL LMAO!!!!!!

  • Ray Conniff is great

  • Me faz lembrar minha adolescência... Que nostalgia...

  • It's always amazing to watch and listen to Ray Conniff music ...

  • easy listening music...so relaxing....

  • HOW I WISH I GOT TO GO SEE HIM PERFORM AT A OPERA HALL MUST OF BEEN THE BEST TIMES EVER!=)

  • Amazing! To think that these are not even his own orchestra and singers. The RIAS Orchester of Berlin has classical roots and Conniff has it jazzin' it up complete with his exuberant antics. As for the Rosy Singers all I know is that they are German and had been around for quite a while since the '50s probably with changes in membership. I wish we could see more of their productions here on You Tube.

  • Not to be negative, but this is version MUST have been syned from the '58 album 'S awful Nice. Every bit and peice of this song corresponded perfectly and the accoustics are identical. Impossible that this sound was of this "live" performance, but it looked good and I love this song!

  • Comment removed

  • @drh4683 I removed my comment since a Conniff expert I know has weighed in that the sound was indeed dubbed for this video. Sorry for my misinformation & appreciate your astuteness. Now I wonder how RIAS really sounded. I'll bet they were at least 99% as good as Ray's original recording! chuck

  • those were the days when . . . . .we were still young. . . .thank you for the beautiful sound and clip

  • I love it

  • I don't consider Ray's music to be elevator music but if that is where you have to go to hear it I will ride more often.. RWB

  • OMG!! My grandfather had a bunch of Ray Conniff records!

    No disrespect intended because...

I have to also add that I enjoy every bit of it.

    Thank you.

    and Thanks chkjns.

  • Haven't you noticed that today's "elevator music" isn't nice anymore! I only hear "soft rock" on public speakers these days, or perhaps an oldies station.

  • Very true...and the stores are running digital and just plain random.

Never was a top 40 person, Always preferred side B.

    Thanks again.

  • I never knew he was such a ham!!

  • @gregoryagogo - that's one of the top 10 reasons that Ray is my hero!

  • What a nut.

  • Some of the first LPs I bought back in the fifties were Ray Coniff

  • Magníficao!!!!

  • Made this my featured video for now, Manfred - My channel pops up and Ray walks out from behind the curtain and strikes up the band!

Can you tell me why some videos open instantly as this does while others must be 'clicked' to start them? This has puzzled me for several months.

Ray is still the most charismatic bandleader ever!!!

His music is alive inside him always !!!

  • from Brasil star five

  • ¡Excelente música, es sencillamente fascinante y relajante!

  • "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 operetta Roberta. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, costarring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. It has been covered by numerous artists, including Nat "King" Cole who first covered it in 1946.Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by the doo wop group The Platters, which became a number one hit
