Mao did a lot of costly misjudgements that hurt millions but an even greater number of peasants saw their living standard increase. When not going through the great leap forward when many suffered, the peasants had never had it so good. Even so, life and amneties were very basic by western standards but It goes to show how bad things were for them prior to the revolution.

Around 20 (10-30) millions died of starvation due to complete failure of Great Leap Forward (1959), but they were not killed. Was Mao interested in killing their own supporters (pesants who fought for revolution)? No, obviously not.
So stop inventing false numbers of 60 or 70 or 700 millions killed.
