He was trying to humanize the slaves in the eyes of white voters, in order to promote the abolition of slavery. His songs were compared to the play, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," by Harriet Beecher Stowe, whom Abraham Lincoln credited with the advancement of abolitionism.
