Just goes to show how much better a band can sound over time. These guys didn't sound good at all when they first started, now listen to them. They are one of the best sounding bands of all time at this point!!!!
@Netlocd they sound good in this vid, what are you talking about? This is among there better sounding performances of I Will Follow, better than they sound now with this song.
Prone-to-tears-shivers running down as I travel back to myself with them, my great companions in teenageland along with The Police, The Teardrop Explodes + Echo & the Bunnymen. I will follow to another time, another place.
Bono and Edge, I think - definitely Bono, are 20 years old here, while Larry is 19, the age of your typical college sophomore. I found the staging set up interesting - it kind of confused me at first - with Bono singing way in the back and Larry playing the drums in front. This is one of their all time best songs, and I read is a personal one for Bono, as it relates to the passing of his mother when he was a kid. Larry also later lost his mother, and Bono helped console him.
@SoccerRockNY FanTrivia: Edge is only a few months beyond age 19 here. Larry might not have even turned 18 yet, Oct 31 bday. Bono and Adam are 20. Btw, Paul Mccartney's mother and Bono's mother both died when the boys were respectively age 14. John Lennon's mother and Larry's mother died when the boys were, respectively, 17.
wow great old video! these are hard to come by. I am sure U2 would not want to make a dvd of their old video's when they first started so young! they still rock!
Yes the bass player's hair looks good for once! And he certainly looks the coolest, I suppose Naomi Campbell (boo!) did rub off on him! However his big quiff style also looked cool.
New Wave it is called. The make up is a sign of that music style. Like early simple minds, cure (still has it) depech mode (still has it), even duran duran !!
I hear people keep saying Bono'a haIr was embarassing/ ridiculous at this time. I have to say, though--I think it's a pretty sexy/ cool haircut. If my hair was a little more similar to it, I'd totally give it a whirl.
Yes if i was 16 againg i let my hair grow like back then. I had my hair on my shoulders and the GEL was so much in that hair that it was straight up instead of down... yea yeah the early years.:)
If this is from Get It Together it's not from their first Get It Together appearance - on that they promoted A Day Without Me and they definitely had a U2 backdrop in the background - it was terracotta coloured drainpiping that spelt U2. They had the same background when they played Leeds Futurama 2 on the Saturday in September 1980.
Like the simple minds and depeche mode etc they all star t like a new wave like band. Look only at the mak-up of bono an jimm keerr. Had many fights with friends about that topic. They all think they where like a normal rock band in tyhe eighties, but they dont know their early stuff... New Wave powerrrr!
yeah, that's right, Boy is a good example of that, like Pablo Honey, Parachutes, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, someone else more ( Aphonic, a non succesful band from USA has an awesome debut, but sadly, last LP. The same for Boedekka)
"absolutely not heard of"? thats rubbish, lots of progs had live acts on even TOTP had the occasional live band on. why would they set up the amps properly? would they really bother to give Bono monitor speakers for a mime? If it was a mime they would use original album, version too.
This is absolutely NOT live. It was unheard of back then (and now for that matter) for a band to play live on a TV show, especially a kiddies pop show. TotPs rarely had live performances, even on TOGWT, bands often used backing tapes.
it is live its not the standard album version, they usually do stuff live. Also the guitars are plugged in and bass guitars do get strummed, how else could you play a bass chord.
Was this played live? Doesn't sound like it, and there's no mics on the amps. Weird that some shows back then would make them pre-record live stuff. Two Hearts on TOTP is another example. I guess it's better than just miming to the album version.
HA! That's what I was thinking too since they had him out there in front. Pretty bizarre? Great stuff though. I bought this album the week it was released way back in 1980. Hard to believe it's been 29 years. Holy cow I'm old...
listen carefully.... theres a part in the song that lyrics says: "your eyes make a circle"...but comparing to the original recorded on "boy" it isn´t in time, the edge comes in with a change on the riff too early, so bono can´t continue the lyrics as the way they are, anyway good song and good performance for being the one of the firsts...
you noticed! that's rite.... and it isn´t their first performance on tv...i've seen one from 1978... it's called street mission u can search for it. they were so bad :)
basically, guessing from the year... bono was 18 in 1978.... it's kinda wierd how they became one of the best rock bands in the whole world... if i were watching this in the "present" i maybe saying..."wht in the name of the lord is this crap??" ROFL!
who knows yet... hopefully the new direction thing is not just talk... I am looking forward to it just because it might be more interesting than the last two... I know lots of U2 fans loved them for "returning to form" but personally I found them boring
Damn!!! Adam hitting that open DEEP E quick on the bass then going up and octave makes this shake my room. They should still play this song that same way today.
