  • this is the first time i've seen larry out front

  • Awesome! You can't get more raw U2 than this... fucking legendary. One day I want to be a U2 historian!

  • Awesome the best song of U2! But i dont understand why are the group in a kids program?

  • What the HELL did Adam do to his beautiful blond curls?!?!

  • Is Bono wearing eyeliner?

  • Just goes to show how much better a band can sound over time. These guys didn't sound good at all when they first started, now listen to them. They are one of the best sounding bands of all time at this point!!!!

  • @Netlocd they sound good in this vid, what are you talking about? This is among there better sounding performances of I Will Follow, better than they sound now with this song.

  • I love how they started the song, in this version... i hope they bring it back!

  • Id might get loud !!!!

  • Prone-to-tears-shivers running down as I travel back to myself with them, my great companions in teenageland along with The Police, The Teardrop Explodes + Echo & the Bunnymen. I will follow to another time, another place.

  • Love the hairdos, and this song's not too shabby either. Bless 'em!! :-)

  • WOW! Best version of IWF, actually :)

  • 1:35 hilarious! thanks for posting!

  • the best¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Adam: Guys, bad news, I couldn't afford my perm this month.

  • Gotta admit, Adam has some really good stage presence here. Must be the hair.

  • saw them in NY city -was it 80

  • Lol i love Adams hair i honestly could not believe that was him.

  • Wow! Great post. Thank you, I'm back in high school. What a trip.

  • bono flxuffs his hair more than chrissie shrimpton

  • is that. . .is that an ugly Christmas sweater I see? spectacular!! :D

  • Adam Clayton = Best hair ever right here. -)

  • no fucking playback!

  • edge still moves the same haha

  • Hhahahahhahaha 1:20 so funyyy! Bono still being the BEST!

    And U2 = NO WORDS!

  • @Sam049212 OMG YESSS AHHAHAHAAA so funnny. he still cant bloody dance but we love him really.

  • can u see some little kid staring open mouthed at the TV watching this ??

  • Adam's hair - awesome! <3 How I love these guys...

  • Bono and Edge, I think - definitely Bono, are 20 years old here, while Larry is 19, the age of your typical college sophomore. I found the staging set up interesting - it kind of confused me at first - with Bono singing way in the back and Larry playing the drums in front. This is one of their all time best songs, and I read is a personal one for Bono, as it relates to the passing of his mother when he was a kid. Larry also later lost his mother, and Bono helped console him.

  • @SoccerRockNY FanTrivia: Edge is only a few months beyond age 19 here. Larry might not have even turned 18 yet, Oct 31 bday. Bono and Adam are 20. Btw, Paul Mccartney's mother and Bono's mother both died when the boys were respectively age 14. John Lennon's mother and Larry's mother died when the boys were, respectively, 17.

  • The edge has never looked like he fits in a rock group. He looks like he works on the Buses

  • They're babies! Remind me of the Kinks.

  • Such youthful, raw energy. Nothing beats seeing a band with such great energy in a high school auditorium or in a local tv show like this.

  • WTF with Adam's hair ?? maybe they wouldn't have played any longer if he had kept this hairstyle hahaha

  • wow great old video! these are hard to come by. I am sure U2 would not want to make a dvd of their old video's when they first started so young! they still rock!

  • Adams hair.. pffff.. aaahhhaahahahahaha

  • Wow! these guys went from being the opening act for wet t-shirt contests on their first album to selling out stadiums around the world!

  • Yes the bass player's hair looks good for once! And he certainly looks the coolest, I suppose Naomi Campbell (boo!) did rub off on him! However his big quiff style also looked cool.

  • Their best song by far before they tried to save the world!

  • I hadn´t realized that Adam was with that hair look O_O :P

  • is it just me or does Adam Clayton Kind of look like Paul Banks from interpol?

Great version thank god for youtube!

  • EPiC!

  • U2 tried not to sound like 80's music, but their fashion sure was indicative of the time with new wave hairdos and post-punk fashion.

  • The day Adam found the Dippity Do

  • this was still the punk era i think some people forget that u2 were a punk band.

    bono,s hair is great

  • @malawie02 WRONG .. U2 was never a punk band and made that quite clear. They were influenced by punk ideals at the time

  • @malawie02

New Wave it is called. The make up is a sign of that music style. Like early simple minds, cure (still has it) depech mode (still has it), even duran duran !!

  • I've never seen it before, thank you.!!!! Adam's hair are so strange here XD

  • Bono had cool hair back in the day

  • Nice shirt Bono!

  • Adam looks so good with his hair like that!!!! love it!

  • I hear people keep saying Bono'a haIr was embarassing/ ridiculous at this time. I have to say, though--I think it's a pretty sexy/ cool haircut. If my hair was a little more similar to it, I'd totally give it a whirl.

  • was wollt ihr??

u2 ist eine weltband geworden :D

    what do you want

    u2 was becoming a "world-band"

  • amazing!!!!!! i can't stop laughing:D

  • This is just plain old adorable, Bono sure was pretty in that planet shirt.

  • November 9 th 1980 moonlight club, London. It was their first TV appearance outside Ireland.

  • Adam's hair look's so fucking good here! Who's with me?

  • @Nigelxman adam looks like kurt cobain on "in bloom"

  • @Nigelxman The Edge hadn't turned into The Dome yet.

  • I love this song - U2 is awesome

  • bono's hair and tight pants are just plain sexy.

  • @xsweetgorgeousx

Yes if i was 16 againg i let my hair grow like back then. I had my hair on my shoulders and the GEL was so much in that hair that it was straight up instead of down... yea yeah the early years.:)

  • haha I think Adams hair and glasses here really suit him haha.

  • U2,R.E.M.,The Romatics, the music of today is a ripoff of the music of 1978 - 1987!

  • Adaaaammm???? Haaaahahahahahaha!!!!

  • If this is from Get It Together it's not from their first Get It Together appearance - on that they promoted A Day Without Me and they definitely had a U2 backdrop in the background - it was terracotta coloured drainpiping that spelt U2. They had the same background when they played Leeds Futurama 2 on the Saturday in September 1980.

  • Who are these guys? Some NEW WAVE band? They'll never get anywhere. HAHAHA

  • @2uberu

Like the simple minds and depeche mode etc they all star t like a new wave like band. Look only at the mak-up of bono an jimm keerr. Had many fights with friends about that topic. They all think they where like a normal rock band in tyhe eighties, but they dont know their early stuff... New Wave powerrrr!

  • @2uberu

they're the biggest band in the world right now, man =P

  • @2uberu the first u2 song i listened was Vertigo...and then instantly i became a u2 fan

  • @Andymalcolm1 but this song is better than vertigo

  • Yeah, can't believe I haven't seen this hair style!

  • How old?

  • hair of adam bahahah

    U2 grezat band

  • Boy is still one of my favorite debut albums EVER! Top 3 atleast!

  • yeah, that's right, Boy is a good example of that, like Pablo Honey, Parachutes, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, someone else more ( Aphonic, a non succesful band from USA has an awesome debut, but sadly, last LP. The same for Boedekka)

  • Velvet underground. I guess if I think a bit more, there would be a lot of "best debuts" in RnR

  • omg, they're 18-19 years old

  • Bono and Adam are 20 y.o. here.

  • Fab.. followed the boys since day 1 ... never seen this , but then I'm an old git & new to U2ube

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • This is spectacular! Thank you!

  • Wow! Too cool and too funny!! Great song, great band!!

  • hey! where's the crowd

  • Fantastico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!exclusive.

  • "absolutely not heard of"? thats rubbish, lots of progs had live acts on even TOTP had the occasional live band on. why would they set up the amps properly? would they really bother to give Bono monitor speakers for a mime? If it was a mime they would use original album, version too.

  • LOL bonos hair :)

  • lol ADAM'S hair!!!

  • LMAO ADAM'S HAIR

  • Are you sure it's live? Adam looks like he's strumming his bass :S

  • That's just how Adam used to play earlier on, he picked like a maniac!

  • This is absolutely NOT live. It was unheard of back then (and now for that matter) for a band to play live on a TV show, especially a kiddies pop show. TotPs rarely had live performances, even on TOGWT, bands often used backing tapes.

  • Comment removed

  • Adam always plays that way. I'd guess only the vocals aren't live. Everything else seems to fit.

  • it is live its not the standard album version, they usually do stuff live. Also the guitars are plugged in and bass guitars do get strummed, how else could you play a bass chord.

  • Live? I guess those must be the invisible drum mikes so popular in the early 80s...

  • adams hair is quality!!!!!!

grew it out after that to become a blond afro

    LEGENDS!!!!!!

  • The only Irish band worth listening to.

  • this is old but good!

I'm still enjoying this, I will follow!

  • they stole this from P.I.L the public image

  • I loved this tune when it came out. But plenty of us made some "bad hair" decisions in the 80's. Apolgies! :)

  • I picked out U2, the Knack and Ice House as the next big players. 1 out of 3.

  • I think Bono look really badass with that mullet.

  • Great vid

Edge is playing a start he usually plays his explorer on i will follow

  • Your right it seems weird to but Lawrence in the front.

  • hAVING NO STYLE ACTUALLY GIVES THEM STYLE! ;)

  • you're right. in a way i like this video. even that their clothes are from the 70'-80'.

  • I like U2 a lot - but this video made before I was born makes me laugh!

  • I like U2 a lot - but this video made before I was born makes me laugh!

  • And these were the most endearing years, with plenty of quality music from them, and before the world at large knew about them

  • Holy crap! Take a look at Adam's hair! The Edge actually isn't wearing a hat or a skull cap...

  • fantástico, adorei,

acada vídeo cada vez mais fã

  • I'd forgotten about the 'mullet of champions' on Bono!

  • Was this played live? Doesn't sound like it, and there's no mics on the amps. Weird that some shows back then would make them pre-record live stuff. Two Hearts on TOTP is another example. I guess it's better than just miming to the album version.

  • I'm quite sure it's live, no need to 'mike' their amps to play live over the drums.

  • This was a kids show and they probably made him "tame" his hair a bit. In order not to scare the kids I suppose. LOL! I love it.

  • wow, wow, wow ! ! ! !

    Adams hair, great !!

    Thanks for posting

  • Cosmic man!

  • Does Bono want the biddy?

  • seems to cover the beatles

  • Bono is a hottie!

  • LOL back when The Edge had a full head of hair.. :P

  • It's the LARRY MULLEN BAND!!! LOL

  • HA! That's what I was thinking too since they had him out there in front. Pretty bizarre? Great stuff though. I bought this album the week it was released way back in 1980. Hard to believe it's been 29 years. Holy cow I'm old...

  • cool! how much was it back in the day?

  • Adam looks like Miss Jane Hathaway from Beverly Hillbillies in this one. Talk about a chameleon. ;)

  • ahahaahahahaha

  • and Bono looks like Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy.. lmao

  • LMFAO. ..adam's hair..classic AHAHAHA

  • dig Bono's crazy moon shirt.. Dx

  • look at that dance creations, hairs, that clip is amazing...i luv U2.. seeya in Prague 2009

  • omg Adam's hair are terrible xD

    Bono is always great!

  • ADAMS HAIR, Jesus Christ . . .

  • BOY (1980)!

  • from the beginning til now...this band has been unrivaled...so much relevant music

    the greatest.

  • Once upon a time this blew me away - now it looks like a bunch of 'look at me' sixth formers, playing a very shallow and tedious dirge.

  • maybe they left out Bono's little segue for time constraints being a live show

  • well, i was 12 years old !!!

    I love adam's look !!!

He hasn't changed : did you see him at rehearsal obama's inauguration ?

  • yes haha he did the same movings

  • And the same (just a little) style (dont know the real word in English)

  • It really is all about the drums.

  • lol ye i think they planned that though cuz it seems like the whole band went in2 the riff and larry hits the crash and adam changes note 2

  • listen carefully.... theres a part in the song that lyrics says: "your eyes make a circle"...but comparing to the original recorded on "boy" it isn´t in time, the edge comes in with a change on the riff too early, so bono can´t continue the lyrics as the way they are, anyway good song and good performance for being the one of the firsts...

  • i see when i go in it

it was something like that right?

  • you noticed! that's rite.... and it isn´t their first performance on tv...i've seen one from 1978... it's called street mission u can search for it. they were so bad :)

  • i saw it.

    how old were they there?

    like 17? lol

  • basically, guessing from the year... bono was 18 in 1978.... it's kinda wierd how they became one of the best rock bands in the whole world... if i were watching this in the "present" i maybe saying..."wht in the name of the lord is this crap??" ROFL!

  • hahaha, yea, if theye were doing this now, they wouldn't become as big as they are now...

  • will no line on the horizon be a good album

  • I predict that no line on the horizon will be be the biggest album of the next 2 years.

  • im sure it will be big but good? i think it will just want opinions

  • who knows yet... hopefully the new direction thing is not just talk... I am looking forward to it just because it might be more interesting than the last two... I know lots of U2 fans loved them for "returning to form" but personally I found them boring

  • i have like every one of thier albums and the last too were great but a little touch feely at times

  • haha whats up with Adams hair?

  • Amazing!Absolutely fantastic!Haha,look at Adam's hair,priceless!

  • cool cut...thanks for sharing...brings me back to my youth.

  • i love bono's hair

  • Who are they?

    They'll never make it.

  • no adam clayton...

  • That IS Adam Clayton. He just looked different 28 years ago...

  • they're only kids and they still sounded great!

Anyone got "Get it together" when Pretenders were on it?

  • espetacular

  • espectacularissimo!

  • Next tour Larry goes up front again!!! LOL

  • look at Adam Clayton`s hair..

  • Great song ffom the future "Super Group"....Adam looks like Ms Hathaway from the old "Beverly Hillbillies" show!

  • One of my favourite songs by U2, so classic! Bono's not quite as wild here as he would get later on though.

  • Damn!!! Adam hitting that open DEEP E quick on the bass then going up and octave makes this shake my room. They should still play this song that same way today.

  • when they were at their best!
