@pocketdynamo87 Same here. I remember this well too. He was a scrape away from the uk title recently and a close world title again but unfortunately i think he's past his best now.
Williams may have lost tonight and may now be past his best but no shame, he's a legend for his 2002/2003 form alone. That was when I discovered snooker, watching a then-unstoppable Mark win all four major titles in a row. Definitely up there among my favourite all-time sporting moments, pure magic !!
Mark Williams is a wonder to watch he just glides around the table. such a pity that he lacks the mentality and resilience of J Higgins, otherwise undoubtedly he would win more titles.
i am from quebec canada , so i speak french and i was just wondering what means Welsch , i guess it means someone from a certain place in the world so please if anyone of you could tell me , i am curious ! i have an idea but not sure maybe welshe are the people living in the prince of wales territories ? so anyways nice game i liked it :)
@giannispecioso the place is called wales and it is part of uk welsh means if you from wales you get called welsh like if your from england they get called english
He is so relaxed after his 147,,, thats pretty cool. i am impressed. Did u observe his intentions at 04:55 he started thinking about 147 even before securing the frame, if he missed that black he could have lost the frame, so this is exactly what confidence is......
If Mark Williams could improve his positional play he would be an incredible player. His potting ability can't be doubted though, and this 147 is a good summary of his game. He is by far my favourite player though, love how he goes into exhibition mode and is so relaxed around the table. Also his stance while cueing looks like a drunken horse.
Quick question - is the rule that you can only sink the black ball every OTHER turn? Because this guy looks so good that he could just sink the black one non-stop if it were legal to do so.
I counted 4 times for 3 shots. Get in was said twice as well. Dennis Taylor's enthusiastic commentary, but who can blame him? A superb break, it looked like the 147 had gone several times.
once again i watch 147 on here alots ... this is one of the best ... better n harder then most of it....when i watch mark n ronnie i play 100% better...thanks you mr william....
Amazing to think that just a few seasons ago Mark Williams was world number 1 holding every BBC trophy in the same season, putting in performances like this and now he's struggling to stay in the top 32... Matthew Stevens is the same, Stephen Lee, Ken Doherty etc etc... Really is surprising
well not all ronnies 147s started with a fluke,i think thats abit harsh.but i do like the way he played some shots on this maximum, marks a great player
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Great for Mark, I kind of like him. But IMO he is not too good at shot selection and positioning. He had to do a couple hard pots in order to achieve 147, so I'd say he was overall lucky that day.
Mark Williams has an average-to-poor positioning, but he is one of the most brilliant players and the best potters out there... And yes, i bet on him for the world title 2009!
I wish Graham Taylor would stop getting the number of Crucible 147s wrong. He always seems to create one. There have been six, and this was the sixth. He thought this was the seventh, and I believe he continues to make this mistake on occasion.
Shame mark has struggled with form since he joined forces with terry grithiths. This is an equisite example of what break-builiding is all about; recovering position while consitently stroking the cue-ball and keeping focused. A great example of the man himself.
It's a loss to the snooker sport that Mark Williams obviously not practice as much as he did few years ago. Who can forget his fabulous seasons between 1999 and 2003. Back then he was potting balls from every distance and angles. Just marvellous, as his nickname.
Totally agree! Between those years, in my mind he showed some of the greatest snooker form in history. A really enigmatic player - I just hope he returns to form.
but its not hard to compare, not being harsh but ronnies was just way better, accept it. mark williams one may have been full of impressive shots, but they werent as consistent as ronnies constant stream of genious and speed. in conclusion, bye.
The speed that Ronnie done his break at is irrelevant. Mark's break was full of much more impressive pots, but they were only more impressive because of his terrible position. So it's actually quite hard to compare the breaks.
Nail on the head - The reason there were so many impressive pots is because he ran out of position so many times. See Ronnie's, or John Higgins' vs Williams in the LG Cup of 2003 for exceptional positional play and cue ball control.
Can't make up my mind on which is the best. When I watch Ronnie's record setter or this, I always want to see the other. Arguably Mark is the best potter, Ronnie the best breakbuilder. How many times during this break do you think 'how did he even think of trying to pot that?' or during Ronnie's 'how on earth did he got the cue ball to do that?' I can only hope we'll have one season when both are on top of their game and clash at the crucible. That would get a lot of you debating I'm sure
this is better than ronnie's 147, who cares if the positioning of the balls, we want to see some hard shots. this break is more entertaining than ronnies 147
Mark did a few 147s that i saw before. Maybe this 147 is better than ronnie's but have u seen all ronnie's 147s before? you should see how fast and aggressive his shots are. 5min 20s for the world fastest 147. he did 3 times. the other 2 was below 6m 40s.
It doesn't matter that Mark Williams ran out of position more than Ronnie and is somehow not considered as good as Ronnie despite having won nearly as many tournaments, as many World finals and having lost fewer major finals than Ronnie, the fact is that this was a 147 break and, with the exception of a free-ball 147 that has yet to happen in tournament play, that requires 15 reds, 15 blacks and the colours. More than any of his critics could even dream of accomplishing.
No 147 break will ever beat Ronnie's 5 min 20 secs one, and only reason Mark's shots were harder is because his positional play isn't as good as the great Ronnie O'Sullivans
Ronnie's 147 in 5.20 is way more impressive. All you have to say is FIVE POINT TWENTY, and that says it all, really. Sure Williams had to take on some hard shots but that was just because his positional play wasn't as good as Ronnie's. And once again 5.20 :)
Agree 100% with you, Ronnie's was perfection as he never ran out of position. Williams had some great recovery shots but that was because he had dodgy position
wow this is a more difficult one indeed. but to make the shots easier is one thing a great player must be able to do, isn't it? well luck is sometimes important as well anyway.
