@xXmEtAlFaNxJxLx No need to get vulgar. You shouldn't rely on Wikipedia for facts as anyone can change it. There is more to the story. Yes Nike was able to use the song for one year after the lawsuit wich cost Nike $500,000.00. Nike was also sued by the remaining members of the Beatles for $15million. The amount they settled for was ordered to be kept secret by the Supreme Court on November 9, 1989. Again Nike DID NOT have permission to use this song. Research before you call "bullshit".
What is so bad about this Ad anyway? Kids today don't even know who the Beatles' are. This ad is respectful to the song and it introduces young people to Beatles' music.
@Srhandel Kids know who the Beatles are if they have smart, cool parents with taste. But seriously, kids will alway know about the Beatles if they pay the least bit of attention. I did (im 33). Paul wanted to spend the money but he did not want to buy johns stiff because it did not feel right. He asked Yoko to buy half of the songs while he bought the other bit Yokohama being a botch did not. That's why Jackson has the songs. End of story
Michael owned this song fair and square. He bought the ATV catalogue after bidding on it. It was up for sale for over 10 years and neither Paul nor Yoko would spend the money to keep the songs. Michael owned the songs and wanted to use them to make him money. Just conducting business, there was nothing dirty here
Does anyone even know what they are talking about here? Michael Jackson didn't sell this song to Nike. This commercial aired in the 80's without the permission to use it. Nike was sued for 10 million dollars.
@kingsergio128 Does anyone even know what they are talking about here? Michael Jackson didn't sell this song to Nike. This commercial aired in the 80's without the permission to use it. Nike was sued for 10 million dollars.
Nike got sued for this, The Beatles and MJ/Sony never gave permission for them to use a master recording. They've never given anyone permission, everytime you hear one it's a cover version because anyone can use a cover song. You still have to pay, except not as much and you don't need permission.
What did they do, OneSwellChick? They just put the Beatles song in there how did they ruin it? They just put it on a commercial, and even though I do hate Nike, that's not ruining a song!
I wasn't exposed to The Beatles as a kid, so when I saw this commercial at 12 years old and heard this song I was hooked. To everyone using such hateful words to express their distain towards Nike because it distorts the meaning of the song... you really should look in the mirror.
Focus on real problems please, like feed the child, stop forest fires, global warming, AIDS, Conflict in Darfur, Iraq war, SOMETHING ooohh protest abortion... do something instead "Blah, blah, blah Beatles boo woo" I'm a beatles fan but geeze they broke up 'THERE ARE NO MORE BEATLES!!' as George said lol.
the Beatles are over but their ideas and dreams still live on. this song is supposed to symbolize the struggles of humanity and complete chaos. their are more serious things at hand but to know that an idea of some of the greatest minds of our time is being used in such a way is crap.. they lived for their music and their art and to use it this way is like spitting on their very existence. a big slap in the face. things of substance don't have a price no matter who the creator is.
haha you're funny. but really it's just a commercial. if Paul liked the commercial you would like it too mostly likely. Seriously why are we writing comments on shoe commercials that use Beatles songs.
all I'm saying is loosen up, it was over 20 years ago. If Paul let it go, then so should you :)
obviously he didn't and not every point of view that the Beatles had is exactly the same as mine. if Paul liked it then id say thats no good considering its john and Georges message to the world and not so much Paul's. but getting out of this alternate reality that you live in Paul did not like the message that Nike put out and thats something i can agree with. i don't go on stake outs in front of nike but the least i can do is comment on this video stating my opinion.
ha i know that would blow... id have to do the old man in if they did... jk. but no i really hate McCain with the intensity of a thousand suns....-_- he just creeps the shit out of me..
ya.. leadership and experience should be at the forefront not how you got caught by the Vietnamese's and your thoughts on religion. tons of ppl fought in that war and didn't come out alive or even with their legs and this should be the disiding factor if you should be president or not? shit give the presidency to lieutenant Dan if thats the case. At least hes got some spunk to him...
Your attitude is just the reason why this world is in the state it's in. Caring about the little things that matter to us is just as important as caring about the big things. It's called having standards. You can be a slave to commercialism though. Apparently all the brainwashing is starting to work.
the reason why this is wrong is because the Beatles didn't write the song about a god dam shoe..they didn't mean it as a light note either.. this proves that anything that MJ writes is meaningless.he has no soul or respect for music he just wants to capitalize off it and make some profit. his music is very beautiful but he is a very sick and fucked up person not only for this but many things that have happened in his life.if you were a song writer or a musician you'd understand the pain of this
thats bs.. Nike dosent give a flying fuck about an opinion or an idea. all they care about is their product selling. they use adds to hook a potential customer. how about you go look up what some of the Beatles had to say about this matter. I'm sure they are sick to their stomachs that a strong idea of theirs is used in such a manipulative and light hearted manner. like their ideas and their effort means shit and it all boils down to a good dam shoe.
People don't like Beatles music being used in crappy shoe commercials. But I must say that the "All You Need Is Love" diaper commercials are much more heinous than this advert.
Yeah, but people don't have standards anymore. It's a different time. That, and it's not the actual Beatles' version being used in that stupid diaper commercial.
are u an idiot michael jackson bought the beetles songs and he could do watever he wants with the the beetles music all he did was try to make money im sure you would do the same thing
any one with no since of substance or identity would only think about money such as Michael Jackson and possibly you. life is not about making money. its about discovering who you are and what you stand for.
A Beatles co. actually sued Nike for the use of this song. It was settled out of court, but i think the song goes great with how Nike was rising to the top above addidas. Nike uses some great ad ideas
Yes, it is just business, but that's a cold way to look at it. I believe that was Paul' point. Paul says the same things in interviews he does now as he did then. He's not very fond of Mr. Jackson.
haha you're funny for one don't speak for me or assume things about me when you never even met me.. Standards? has it ever occurred to you that everyone their own standards. The brainwashing? you are so paranoid.
Oh not they're not. Haven't you seen McCartney in interviews?? I'll try to find one on YouTube. He hates the guy. He even does an imitation of him saying, "Oh Paul, it's only business!" He talks about Michael with such disgust. Anyway, if I find one of the interviews I'll post the link.
He was also friends with Paul McCartney and bought them up right out from under him. Paul had suggested he get into publishing rights and the next thing he knows the guy buys HIS songs. Not cool.
Well, it didn't air that many times. I think I saw it once back then. They pulled it WAY fast when they saw how many people were outraged by it. You don't f with the Beatles. They didn't give their permission, so no, it was NOT right.
For those of you who don't know, since '85, Michael Jackson has owned the rights to pretty much all the Beatles song catalog. He bought the company that owned the rights to over 200 Beatles songs for 47 mill, outbidding Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono. He continues too license their art to shitty advertisers to this day.
Anyway, to those of you who are like, "how DARE they?" I want you to think of this: what if someone else ended up with Michael's songs and someone put "Beat It" in a Nike ad? They have similar "hard rock" (kinda) sounds, they both have messages about not fighting. Yet, would they feel the same way about that song being used if someone had bought it from MJ?
It's actually NOT the first ad to use a Beatles song. Ford had used "Help!" and other songs, but they weren't the Beatles' version, just as with Target's ads with "Hello, Goodbye." I think Nike thought they got the rights to the recording.
Music is a business, despite the care that goes into its artistry. The Beatles' songs are expensive even to cover, so be happy there have been so few ads. Still, few TV shows or movies can afford to use songs that would be perfect complements to some scenes. It preserves the holy aura, but it also stifles some creative endeavors which would enhance their legacy. Nike ads probably don't, but you've got to admit it's a cultural event. 20 years on and people are still bitching about it!
Who did this? Yoko! What does Yoko and a crow have in common? They both live off of dead Beatles. This song was NOT in the Beatles song book, one of the few John & Paul still have (had), but Yoko grubbo milked it for money.
I can't Believe what Madison Ave Did to The Beatles song Revolution, those motherfuckers, because Lennon is Death they take his song and turn it in to a tennis sales song, and by that Michael Jackson is gulty as well, he deservs that Paul McCartney Buy's his songs and Use it to sell beer or some shit

Being used in an ad does not "totally ruin" the song -- it's still a great, great song. If you're that upset about it, go here, for the real thing.

Who did this? Yoko! What does Yoko and a crow have in common? They both live off of dead Beatles. This song was NOT in the Beatles song book, one of the few John & Paul still have (had), but Yoko grubbo milked it for money.

it's ironic because the beatles always hated the idea that their music might be used by corporations or for tv commercials.
