It does make it hard to get lost in the fantasy when there's a black guy playing a Scott. Not to say that he can't sing, it just destroys the magic of temporarily believing.
Oh man, I remember this so well...I was a part of this production. :) I was the said Bonnie Jean's father, heheh. Our version of the musical was a bit different in which we completely axed the two male singing-only parts. I forget what their names were, but yeah, I got a few divvied-up solos in it, hehe. It was my first venture into drama ever, and I've been obsessed ever since. Oh, and don't be hatin' on a brotha. ;P He's one of the most awesome guys I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Even though it's historically inaccurate .... I have to say the young man has a very good voice and that's why he got the part ... they needed someone who could sing the part .... so kudos to the person who casted this young man.
Sure it's historically inaccurate for a black male to play a Scotsman,BUT, this is acting. We suspend a certain sense of reality, and get into the fantasy that is this musical. Back in 1977 Junior High School rendition of Brigadoon in Glendale, Queens (NY), a black male played the lead. Back then, the school was 99% white, mostly of Germanic heritage. The black actor's performance was awesome. To this day I still remember the performance. That's acting and that's what it's all about, folks!
@livingwhites Bravo to you! I remember the hoopla over a black actor portraying Judas in the film, Jesus Christ Superstar. The actor in the role, Carl Anderson, was brilliant and was cast because he was brilliant. Race didn't come into it at all.
oh my god this is a freaking high school musical, not a history book! i'd rather have equal opportunities for all students than historical accuracy in some little HS production....

Only in america could a negro play a 200 year old scotsman. I look forward to the stage production of "Porgy an Bess".. starring Gerard Depardieu and "wee annie coulter"
The guys a good singer, and,..no I wont apologize for saying that word!...coulter.

Believing WHAT exactly? That this is real life?? You would think the singing and dancing would tip you off.
It's called suspension of disbelief.

A truly great performance will make the viewer get lost in the story and yes, replace reality for a while.

@swissking18, The word is spelled "Scot" when referring to a person of Scottish lineage. "Scott" is the spelling of the surname.
