Just the title of the movie is stupid. It has nothing to do with the mayas really. Just uses their image to portray a barbaric society. The mayans where nothing less than the most civilized people of the world in history. When they show the "juego de pelota" they use the sacred place as a javelin throw to kill the prisoners. I totally agree with Alex here. Apocalypto is an amazing film. The middle third of the film (in the Mayan city) is genius.

The Passion of the Christ is a great film, too.

Historically accurate in which way? history in general is bullshit. What we "know" of the mayans is only a few supposedly deciphered scripts and stone heiroglyphs. Anthropologists and historians try and make it sound as if they know the truth or what really went on THEN but wo the fuck really knows? the movie apocalypto was fucking awesome. I've got to say that it was probably one of the best movies i have ever seen and i completely agree with what he is saying. if you haven't seen it you probably will enjoy it alot. that movie and the movie gladiator were probably two of the most moving and interesting movies that i have ever seen and they both looked so real it blew my mind. many people say they thought 300 was the best but in looked so fake and the effects were corny? only opinions!!!

You know the story of your people huh? Wrong. Even Colombus visited the myan people. they gave him cocoa bean to bring back to spain because they loved a drink similar to chocolate. This guy doesnt know shit about Maya people, nor does Mel Gibson, what he was portraying in Apocalytpo is the Aztec civilization, Maya didnt sacrifice the way he was showing it in the movie. Spanish never had contact with Maya people like he shows in the movie (arriving in boats). Maya had already left their main urban centers long before spanish arrived to main land America. The movie research is poor and doesnt show what Maya really were.

I read about the Mayans years ago. Mel was nice aboutthis film. He did not include the babies being thrown into fire pits. Or even babies being born and parents happy to bring their babies to be sacrificed. Blood would run down long grooved out trenches. So much blood poured continually down these trenches from babies sacrifieced. This Mayan Society represents our Society today. God is showing us something. Repent because we are no better then these sick people in this society in this film.

This film came after "The Passion of The Christ. "Apocalypto" shows society that without Christ being it's center we can turn into mind controlled blood shedding monsters. The leaders played on the peoples' ignorance to control them. The leaders knew astrology and kept that knowledge from the people. So when the solar eclipses would come. They made the people believe they had the power to pray to their sun god to bring the sun back. Fear Control Factor. Much like today. Man controls with fear.

Apocalypto is one of my favourite films. However, for Alex to say it's historically accurate, is a very absurd comment to make.

Seriously, it's quite the opposite. Like Braveheart, it BUTCHERS historical events.
