@lieve4 i understand how you are feeling. While listening to theese angel voices i look at the photo of my little angel "Simo" that now listens serafins' sings all the day long. All his pain in his 5 years short life is not anymore. One day we will find our angels again! May sweet Mother Mary dry your tears.
I dont want to sound like someone trying to make it look bad. Or like someone trying to look pro or good.
In my selfish and credibility lacking opinion: I love it. But i think mature male voices in it would sound perfect to me, because this reminds of the warmth of life. The warmth of the world. The warmth of the sky. To me the whole "holy" theme doesnt suit. This sounds like the tip of a burning needle.
These young boys have such amazing voices.. It is like hearing Angels sing to us to soothe our hearts and minds.. I truly enjoy listening to them when I am feeling stressed or have other things on my mind.
This is the first time I have heard this song. It actually brought tears to my eyes. So beautiful. Tom, your voice will DEFINITELY be missed in Libera.
Amazing. I haven't got words. Please don't ever stop singing. It's really alive, it's really music. Your singing could save this world! I was loved. Thank you.
It's hard enough singing a counterpoint, and worse when it's in a foreign language; but this song has no words whatsoever! How does the lead soprano remember to keep to his own melody when everybody else is singing something different?
I don't know how he does it, but he certainly does it beautifully...
@ColorfulObject The lead soprano is singing the main melody, so it is a bit easier to do even by himself as the others are harmonising. They would have also learnt the tune from reading music, and the amount of time put into practising can't go unnoticed. It sort of works in the way, like when a person hears a song, they are more likely to remember the tune (or part of it) than the words.
But they are certainly to be commended for their efforts and success :) It is very beautiful.
@ColorfulObject do you sing in a choir? lol, because singing your own pitch while there's others around you is a big part of singing. The solo is actually the easiest out of all the voice parts haha...Tom is so amazing. His voice is angellic :O
@ColorfulObject It is hard to explain, but when I sing solos I just sing. You hear the other parts but you are kind of in other world. You just sing what you have to sing and enjoy the moment :-)
@sonofgod284 Yes, it doesn't feel good when people or things you love are sometimes mean-spiritedly disparaged, but unfortunately there will always be the naysayers.
Tom and other Libera boys are experiencing their share of "fame", a double-edged sword which brings out both types of people: those who love and those who hate them. Even saintly Mother Teresa had her detractors. Fortunately, haters can't destroy what you believe to be beautiful and good. Ironically, haters are who need love most.
fantastic voices and a good quality of the recording. The Name of this piece is Air what means arie (sing a song). When I hear this song I would translate air to aero. It sounds like swinging atmosphere.
@3kidzzful boys in the early choir begin at 7 or 8 and then must graduate to the performance choir. Check out the offical Libera site for the Songs of Praise video with Aled Jones, it will give you so many insights to the organization. Enjoy!
I would understand if Libera never performs this song again, Tom Cully has the purest tones in his voice I have ever experienced.
Very much like listening to a Stadavarius being played by a master. He was around 14 when this was recorded which is simply astounding. Thank you Tom, and all the boys, but especially Mr. Prizeman for bringing us this music.
You know, it must be tough for these kids to grow older and, eventually, forced to leave because their voices mature and become deeper. I wonder how they work that.
@34153353 If I am correct, Libera is an extension of St. Phillips church choir. From what I've heard, many of the Libera boys continue on singing in the St. Phillips choir on lower parts. However, most of them live fairly "normal" lives and leave the choir to pursue other interests. I know that Tom Cully, who sings the main solo part in this piece, is now studying music at the Brit School. He has some pretty awesome songs if you want to check him out on myspace!
This is simply THE MOST SUBLIME RENDITION of this famous work. I have played this many times on piano and organ, and listened to so many versions from full strings to small groups. This is the only arrangement I ever want to hear for the rest of my life! Whoever conceived and made this arrangement has my undying gratitude. If I ever get to enter the Pearly Gates this is what I expect to hear. The pure voices and ethereal harmonies take this work into another transcendent realm of beauty.
Having bad day? I recommend a little dose of Libera and Tom Cully. Although the boy has grown his voice will remain timeless in our hearts and minds. Now I wish him well in Uni, and may he continue to stay involved in music, he has the magic touch.
I'm sorry if my ignorance of the "New Age" genre has offended you. Please define in detail what is and isn't considered New Age sound so that I don't tangle myself in this kind of misunderstanding. I've recently been studying victims of mind control and "Secret Knowledge"(Esotericism, Occultism((Not Satanism))), and the phrase "New Age" just makes me cringe. I'm sorry for the confusion.
@william60297 Lovely treble yes but in my opinion still cannot touch the young Aled Jones who in my opinion was the finest treble ever to come out of the British Isles or indeed, anywhere else... I love boy's trebles. So clear and pure...
I love Tom Cully's solo in this Bach: Air. So ethereal. I feel like life is so much better everytime I listen to him. Tom is the best soloist of Libera!!! i miss him so much!!!
I've never been much into classical music, and, as unreligious person even less into church choirs, but Libera, as a special blend of those and more, has that *something* extraordinary which appeals to everyone.
Of all the boys, Tom's voice (with its insane range and control) has caught my ear and made me a Libera addict, lol! I found myself especially enjoying live recordings of Libera where one can see "up close" how much emotion, effort and joy those kids put into the music they create.
@starrysky2008 As an exchoirboy, choral aficinado and teacher, these boys just blow me away with some of their performances. It is true that many people who are not aware of the place boys' choirs play in the musical culture of Europe (UK included) are stunned to discover what they have been missing. Stay well and enjoy the extra dimension to your life.
This video has been posted going on two years now, yet the beauty of it never fails to overwhelm me. Angelic is a perfect description of these voices.
@pinkshinobi1 When they hit puberty they have to leave the choir. It's good that they are able to do this even if it is for a short time. I mean, what happens to any singer when they get old and their voice doesn't work as well? Old age and death are no less inevitable than puberty.
I think you can hear it very clear. They are are simply just singing the "solo instruements" but there is still the whole orchester in the background playing the other instruments.
Oh wow. This is simply amazing and unbelievable! It's such a hard piece to sing, and I can tell by the notes and all. These boys are extremely talented. It's a shame that they don't get as much respect and honor as they need.
Yes, I agree. This is the most beautiful version of this song. Tom Cully must be proud thta he left a lasting legacy that everyone will truly enjoy listening to.
Tom sings the top notes for sure. And I heard Josh singing the lowest parts at 0:49, 1:53-1:58, 2:33-2:43 ,2:57-3:00. What about Ed and Liam? Could anyone recognize their voices? as their voices are kinda similar...
That's definitely Josh on the lower part. Ed usually sings 2nd treble when he and Tom sings together and Liam sings 3rd treble here, you can differentiate his voice from Ed since he has rounder/bigger quality.
I was a 1st soprano lead in a professional boy choir for many years and tour many places. Brings so many memories back. Anne Rice wrote a book about boys and their voices and ca strati in Italy. Was devastating when I lost my voice but not until I was 16. Nothing more ethereal than 1st soprano boys voice. It is truly a God's gift.
By the way, Anne Rice is a great writer BUT the homo-eroticism in the book you mentioned, "Cry to Heaven", is quite disturbing. Not a book I would recommend!
AIR - is a really good night - who else sings - LIBERA MY, YOUR LIBERA ...

Tom sings the top notes for sure. And I heard Josh singing the lowest parts at 0:49, 1:53-1:58, 2:33-2:43 ,2:57-3:00. What about Ed and Liam? Could anyone recognize their voices? as their voices are kinda similar...

i'm pretty sure it's Ed from 0:27-0:31, 1:21-1:25, and 1:52-2:00.
Liam probably does the line from 2:43-2:54.
this is just a guess, but i think Ed has the 2nd treble part and Liam sings the 3rd.

I think that's right. :)

So asberprep,
Are you a tenor, baritone or bass now?
By the way, Anne Rice is a great writer BUT the homo-eroticism in the book you mentioned, "Cry to Heaven", is quite disturbing. Not a book I would recommend!

the reason why these boys sound so angelic ? that's because they smoke hamlet , the mild cigar :)
