@AlexBrasil123123 There was an issue with space at the time I think (a lot of babies at the sanctuary). But this group were particularly affectionate to one another. Cosmo had unusual mothering instint for a baby MALE sloth! Trying to separate them was always a challenge as they would follow each other around in the nursery. Also this was the box we used to take them up to the incubator, I think the incubator was larger than this box. Hope that helped put your mind at ease =]
I heard that Buttercup is 19 years old, she is a pretty sloth. Is it true that in nature sloths live too be 10-20 years, and in captivity the can live too be 20-40 years? =)
@TheRawdon1 Someone should dress up in a sloth costume and skydive to demonstrate this to you, and if they raise a bit of money for the sanctuary, even better!
@watchensee Unfortunately, it is unlikely that these would be released back into the wild as they are so young and humans haven't had success teaching them how to survive in the wild by themselves (What food is safe to eat, predator defence/avoidance, etc) Most likely they will live at the sanctuary, acting as ambasidors for their species and helping to educate the public.
@Mimopudu Aw that's a shame that they'll never live in their natural habitat. However on the plus side they'll probably live longer lives, will never have algea & bugs living on them, never get hit by cars, or caught by predators. They will be kept clean well fed get health care, and live in the life of luxury. Not saying it's better for all creatures to live in captivity, just that they'll have opportunities that wild sloths don't have.
@watchensee Actually, having algae and bugs living on them is beneficial in the wild as it helps them blend into their surroundings, like a sniper's gilly suit! Plus there is a species of moth that is Only found living in wild sloth fur. But besides that I'd say they had a very relaxed, peaceful lifestyle at the sanctuary =]
@Mimopudu I read that the algae also helps cover their scent making them smell more like a plant, than an animal. Yes it's a symbolic relationship that the sloth has with the moths. The moths also lay their eggs in the sloths stools, so that moth species is dependent on the sloth for it's survival. I think the moths might even help growm the sloth, because I saw in one video a moth was around the sloth's nostral looked like it was feeding.
@MrGunnaras Yeah, there are two adults at the sanctuary nicknamed "the blonde bombshells" (because they have white fur) and they are getting pretty good at stealling food when they get the opportunity. I'd say they are smart, but too relaxed to learn tricks, haha.
@Careohx They are pretty sweet, but not in that sense! I imagine they'd taste like a sinuey, soggy carpet that's been cooked in a compost heap. Plus not much meat on them, haha. But seriously, eating endangered exotic species (or as I like to refer to it, 'Exotivorey') is bad. =]
@123ghostboy Yes, you can adopt a sloth (as in Sponsor, not take one home). There's an area on the sanctuary's website for adoptions at Aviarios Del Caribe, where these guys live. Just Google "Aviarios Del Caribe" to get the home page (I would put a link up, but it's not letting me)
@bacalaitoxxx If there is, as awesome as it may seem, I wouldn't be a person who reccomends or agrees with it. Like all exotic animals, they require speciallist care and husbandry, not to mention the costs involved in aquiring, housing and feeding them. Which is why I'd tend to side with volunteering (either at zoos or at sanctuaries), your time and money, no matter how little, will not be wasted. I live in England, so for me, a pet sloth is a definate no. Hope that I helped =]
@Mimopudu oh i c :( and what do you think about having a ferret?where i live theres some guaraguao(similar to the eagle but a bit smaller) and any tips about it?
@bacalaitoxxx I know some people who have ferrets as pets, but they also use them for hunting rabbits! Chameleons are cool, but again, you've got to know your stuff about how to take care of them. I've never heard of a guaraguao before, which country are you from? I have seen a wild Red Kite (eagle-like bird of prey) flying around near where I live, beautiful animals.
@Mimopudu Puerto Rico a island near dominican republic, guaraguao if im right is a native bird here in puerto rico and many from other countrys might not know about it.i googled the red kite and indeed is a beautifull bird.i gotta ask u what do ferrets mostly eat?where can i get one newborn? and lastly is there anything special i need to know about them? sorry for so many questions xD
@bacalaitoxxx Ah cool, so tropical climate then! Ferrets eat meat, my friend gives his rabbit & pheasant, but they'd happily eat cat or dog food if given it. Not sure how you'd go about getting one, I'd check a google search for pet shops. They have been domesticated for a while, so shouldn't be too hard or ethically restricted to find. Oh and they love to hide in tunnels, so if they escape, good luck finding them again! haha
Why are 3-toed sloths not allowed in the U.S.??? I saw a pet sloth in Costa Rica and that animal was scared to death. Why people want to keep exotic pets is discusting. These people just want attention and they want it at the expense of some captive animal. And then they don't know how to feed or care for the animal and it becomes sickly and miserable. Thanks for volunteering at the Sanctuary. I volunteered to tag Green Sea Turtles. What an experience!
Sweet God. These are not fashionable pets. These people rehabilitate injured animals. If you buy onr you're contributing to the horrid exotic snimals trade. You need a hobby collect stamps or get pregnant and have your own cuddle monster. Idiots.
I don't have sloths, I volunteered at the Aviarios del Caribe Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica. They take in orphaned and injured sloths (2-toed and 3-toed) that otherwise wouldn't be able to survive in the wild. Some of them can be rehabilitated back into the wild, but they're usually the non-amputee adults. There are sloths that have lost limbs from trying to climb on electricity pylons, or have been attacked by dogs or cruel humans =/
Where can I get a sloth in the US? I have read up on them and would love to own one :D Any tips as well. All I'm finding is places in Costa Rica and I need one to be shipped to me. Thank you :D
@vinigure22 These sloth babies were rescued orphans at Aviarios Del Caribe Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would like one as a pet, but they are wild animals and should ideally be in their natural habitat. There is a lot of illegal pet trading to be aware of too. I'd recommend looking into volunteering at the Sanctuary if you'd like to get a sloth hug and a rewarding experience! =]
@Mimopudu Yes I have found a legal place that sells sloths in the US. I know they should be in the wild but the only sanctuaries are in Costa Rica and I live in the USA. do they need to be heated?
@vinigure22 Hmm... I'm still sceptical myself. The place should have all the licences and must breed them, otherwise they might be taking them from the wild =[ But anyway, I live in England and I made the trip, lol, you're closer so should be easier, hehe =] I'm no expert, but they live in a humid, temperate habitat, so I guess they'd need some sort of tropical house! Especially if you live in a State that gets seasonal variation (Winter!)
@Mimopudu I have family in costa Rica. Maybe if I go there any time soon to visit I can pick one up :3 Also they would probably be less money then here. the place I was looking at has a lowest price of $1,800
@vinigure22 ... or you could visit them on your way to the sanctuary? =3 Lol, I wouldn't expect them to be cheap, I'd say they'd be pretty high maintenance to keep too.
@Mimopudu I researched them quite well. They're high maintenance for people who work long hours because they are clingy and get attached to humans but they hardly eat because of their low intensity lifestyles. They are $1800 at a place in Florida. The U.S has banned three-toed sloths as far as I know because, the food for them isn't very obtainable in the U.S. However two-toed sloths can eat a variety of veggies and fruit U.S citizens can get. However, three -toed can eat special zoo biscuits.
@manondeklerk Dogs and cats were also once wild. We help them live and they show appreciation to good people for helping them live. Giving a living thing a place to live, food to eat, and caring for them, is not bad.
@vinigure22 Humans think they can just OWN stuff. Such a negative way to look at things of Earth. You can own your car, your television, your iPhone. We are animals, too. Respect each other. Just volunteer. If you think you can afford to own a sloth, then you sure can afford to go to Costa Rica and volunteer. And by the way, anyone who says they can legally sell you a sloth is the US is probably not doing something legal. Good Luck:
@knierymeansfox Three toed sloths are not allowed in the US but two toed are allowed in the US. Yes humans are animals and feeding, caring for, giving another animal a place to live and sleep are perfect ways of respecting each other. I am not wanting to "own" one, sorry for wording it that way, I am wanting to take care for one. Helping such a beautiful creature live shouldn't be considered harmful or negative to anyone.
:D I want that one and that one and that one and that one!!!
