There is two words that sound like 'otaku'. They are both SPELLED differently.

The first one for otaku is the polite word for 'your home'. The second one means basically 'someone with an obsessive interest in something'- which you could say it evolved from the first meaning since most otakus usually stay home.

The otaku that you here a lot tends to be use just for people just for people with interest in anime/manga in America.
