I wouldn't necessarily say all precontemplators are in "denial". After all, how many people (including ourselves) make bad choices but are fully aware of and accepting of the consequences? That word "denial" just strikes a nerve for me.
Exactly! Some in precontemplation would like to stop using but don't believe they can stop. These people lack self-efficacy; ie, a belief that their efforts to achieve abstinence will always lead to failure. They feel hopeless. So, they think, why even try, only to be over and over again disappointed. Such people have no self-confidence in their own abilities. They need a great deal of encouragement, support and validation.
@Jamboou1 isnt that what denial is? if you know th outcome of an action is negative and you do it anyway then arent you denying yourself? i just feel that at some stage you would have to be in some form of denial.
salahudeenabduladl: You are now describing "Contemplation" which the next stage of change on the continuum. Way to go! You are on the right path.
