I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Tonight (November 21), I attended a Thanksgiving Service at a local Baptist Church. We opened the service with this hymn.
@mkl62 I have wondered whether Lutherans often sing this hymn of the Reformed tradition. I grew up Baptist in North Carolina, and we always sang this hymn at Thanksgiving. The vivid imagery of harvest and approaching winter was always so wonderful for me. It put words to our experience. As I've gotten older, I've come to love the eschatological imagery of this hymn that we sing right on the threshold of Advent.
Being part of this choir will always be one of the best memories of my life. A true joy and privilege! Presbyterian is a fine school and I will always be thankful that I was able to receive a portion of my education there. Good memories!
A wonderful post! Thank you ...

We generally sing this hymn when we have Thanksgiving Service at my church. We will have it next year (November 23, 2011).

I'm in the U.S. but I consider this THE hymn of the Thanksgiving holiday too.

What an unusual choice for a christmas concert, really lovely hymn (one of my favourites) but not one I'd think of at Christmas!
