That was stunning! I am a dancer of 10 years :] && As I was going thru the comments, it started to piss me off how cruel ppl can be sometimes. I mean shit we're all human. & come on now ppl who who knows the real history, you can't say you know it if you weren't there. Sigh, and when are they ever gonna stop fighting? The fact that our countries are neighbors, we still are ALL diff. ,but have similar customs, dances, etc.
Let me tell you the story. Back in Philippines in mid 80s, in a camp, there was Viet, cambodia and Laotian (they called neighborhood). Viet and Khmer had fight, and Laotian went to split them off...lol
im a cambodian, and i hate vietnamese people with a passion! my family is from kampuchea krom and my great grandmother was killed by viets and thats why i hate them so much
Hey people - we are all brothers on this planet. Our respective cultures are ALL beautiful and enrich us as a species. I beg you to please try and see the beauty in each other cultures - if we cannot do this, then there is no hope for any of us. Love and peace brothers...
I understand, my dad hated the Vietnamese too cuhz of communism. They came into our country blah blah the Vietnam war. They also changed our flag. Even though all of that shit they had to go thru he learned to stop that. I used to feel the same way just cuhz of my dad and I didn't know why, but that was when I was lil. My family is very diverse. Lao, Thai, white, Khmer, Viet and Chinese lol. I love all of them :}
Laotian, Cambodian, and Thai traditional dance styles look the same. But I don't know about the Burmese traditional dance. And the influences of Theravada Buddhism that we share together is a wonderful thing. Gotta love the temples and stupas too.
Hmm, what I've noticed it is that Khmer and Lao stick their legs up longer, while Thai is really brief. But Khmer tend you stick their legs up higher, while Thai and Lao is low.
beautiful. i haven't seen this type of performance in years. we (Khmer, Lao, Thai) all need to get along. we came from the same roots and share similarities. we all borrowed and stole from each other. Most vital act right now is to reserve our culture bc in the US, it's dying FAST.
? please enlighten me with the many words that came from Khmer that can be found in both Lao and Thai. As far as my understanding goes it is pretty limited to a select few vocabs
you may correct me if i'm wrong. the only Khmer words that is same as Lao that i know is: "AAB-NAM" (take a bath or shower) and "TIE-HOOB" (take pictures) That's about all i know.
how am i stupid? dont get mad just because i'm expressing my own opinions about my acknowledgment on Laotian culture. Is your ass even Lao? Enlighten me please. What do you know about Lao traditional dance?????
whatever, you and yo momma and papa so annoying. your faggot ass isnt even Lao and you dont know shit about Laos either. so get the fuck out of SE asia, you chinky-ass gook!!!
no, you austrilian cocksucker. i'm not khmer, i'm laotian. and i don't speak khmer either. but my khmer homies told me some khmer words that are similar to Lao/Thai. "Mango= mug mouang" or "stop= jope" but "jope" in Lao/Thai means "finish" or "over" YOU DUMB AUSSIE FUCK!
The only difference between Khmer and Thai/Lao is authenticity. There are cheap imitations here and there, some good (Thai) and some are bad (Lao) but they don't compare.
Your saying Lao is bad. I am lao, and I am highly interested in the cultures of southeast asia. As a matter of fact I have been dedicating my time and effort to dig up the roots of my culture and other peoples culture. Laos is not cheap and we are different from the Thai. We are made up of 63 tribes all unique in their own way. Only 50 percent of the Lao share common traditions and cultures with the Thai and Cambodians. Please b4 u make a statement, do your homework bcause u sound very ignorant.
Take it as you want, but this is my opinion using Khmer/Mon costumes as a grading scale. 50% only shared with Khmer and Thai traditions? Hmm... I think the figures are a bit higher than that. Language, script, silk, dance, foods, customs ... lots of cultural Lao things have Khmer and Mon roots.
You or other Lao people can think whatever you want about Cambodians but just know that if you talk shit about other people they will say stuff back. Laostar7 says Cambodians are dirty and I'm telling him the REAL difference.
I think you may have mistaken Lao for Thai. Compared to Thailand, Laos has below 50% of what we share with Khmer. Mon Khmer roots are deep in Thai culture not Laos. You can tell from clothes how we differ, Lao silk is not like khmer we use golden threads and patterns that varies and am known for the hem patterns.
Actually I haven't seen much of golden threads in khmer or thai clothes very little if any plus it's different in patterns on clothes as observed from the dancer's skirt. Either way Lao silk is known for its uniqueness and it's different whether you characterize it as or not.
Khmer clothes used in classical dancing almost exclusively uses golden silk thread, Thai prefer the use of silver ones. Plus, even though Laos has much influence from the north, including Mon culture, most of Lao culture is still Khmer derived. There are a ton of everyday vocabulary that came from Khmer that relates to everyday life.
And these words are? I'm sure that these daily words you say, could also be heard in the Dai speaking world of Xishuangbanna in China where the original Tai came from. Golden thread is used extensively in Lao culture not just for classical dance clothes thus our patterns are more various.
is that because Thailand always take advantage. and stole some areas which once belong to Laos and Cambodia, and even from Malaysia too? I know some Cambodians don't like the Vietnamese either because they also took some land called Kampuchea Krom from Cambodia which is southern Vietnam today. and they treat the ethnic-Khmers living there like trash. That's messed up.
In terms of food we all know it's distinct, scripts were adapted from but not adopted so you can't read Thai/Lao just from khmer and our language is really different. Customs we may share some but there are also more differences than similarities.
I can't read Thai nor Lao but the scripts are strikingly similar to Khmer. Both Lao and Thai has vowels that are placed on top, left, right, or combination connected to consonants. Its all very similar and anyone who knows Khmer will most likely be able to learn the other two (Thai and Lao) fairly easily. As for being more different I feel like you're just trying to deny the Indianization the Khmer instilled on Lao.
Similar perhaps strikingly similar I think not. Thai is based from khmer script as I mentioned, Lao is based from Thai script. I'm not denying the link we share with khmer but it's not as much as you think as compared to Thais, Lao is much Landlocked what traveled into the country is mainly from its closest ally, Thailand thus they have been heavily influences by Khmer. That's all.
Actually, the Lao script is much older than the Thai script lol. Compared to Thais, Lao is less Khmer influenced is what you are saying? So you mean to say that Lao is still predominantly Tai like the Tai Yai/Shan? LOL All Tais were influenced by Mon and Khmer people except for the Tais that are still living in southern China. I still think Lao is just as Indianized as Thailand by way of Khmer/Mon cultures.
hmm the Lao script can't be older than the Thai script when in fact it was adapted from the Thai script. If you are referring to the ancient writing used by Shan and Dai people then that's a different story. Lao has Khmer influenced but not as much as Thai.
Lao and Thai scripts are both based under the Sukhothai script. The Sukhothai script used Khmer as a model script, which was in use in 1300-1500 CE. Two scripts derived from this model, Lao and Siamese (Thai) script has been used since 1500 till the present. It seems as though I have given more credit to both scripts as being older when in fact, both Thai and Lao scripts came from the same source and are nearly the same age. I was wrong - so were you about Lao script being adapted from the Thai
i always thought Lao, Khmer, Thai, and Burma scripts all originated from India through the Sanskrit family languages. To me, Khmer scripts are mostly indentical to the Pali (Buddha's language) scripts. "Pasa Thamma"
This is Monola part 2 which she just got her wings back from her mother in law. Haha she's happy she got her wings now she dancing and bye bye bitches! She flies away

history has been lost in translation throughout time....all I know is, there are lots of similarities btwn the three neighboring countries of Laos, Khmer, and Thailand. Vietnam is the only country that you can distinguish apart from.
It is manohra for thai, and manola for lao, but it is also nora chetri which is Malay and that is where it originated from. From Malay it went up to South of Thailand where it later became a story incorporating music, drama and dance. In Malay it was only music and dance.
this dance is called "minola" it tells the tale of a beautiful princess who is half woman half bird. this dance is when she is coming down to earth to play in the lake with her sisters.
thats not true guy...laos has been its country since the iron age...king Fa Ngum form the first kingdom..which lasted till 1976 when the commies started the revolution with the help of vietnam...don't belive me look up the history of laos...
