One thing is undeniable and that is that the ratings plummeted to almost 50% when Conan took over the late show. What kind of power did Jay have over the situation? The NBC had all the power, even to fire Jay and terminate his contract...the same thing they did with Conan actually. I think the truth lies in the middle. It was a strategic mistake to replace Jay, and he was more than happy to take his old show back. Nothing wrong with that.

Have ever looked at how bad Leno's ratings dropped when he took over for Carson. It was so bad, NBC actually did offer Letterman the job before he left for CBS.
