Some people should be reminded that music is a form of expression; there does not have to be a "thesis" of any kind. This entire album is an artistic release of many difficulties Billy endured through his life and it came to be the best they ever released (I'm including Pela in terms of history). The music is far from pointless; the central message for the entire album is to move forward, as that is all anyone can do.

Just just want to point out, that while I enjoy this song, it is fairly bare in content. It doesn't actually convey an opinion about anything, so much as paint a narrative picture, using pretty conventional and easily understood imagery. Which is sort of the point, since it's cathartic pop, I mean, it's a pop song, right? Any ways, I think what they may have been getting at is that at times this sort of music can seem pointless and derivative.

Hey friend, I understand the relation of the protagonist to the singer, all I am saying is that the singer is not actually making any statements. This song has less a meaning, or message, and seems to be more of a template for the singers emotion, which is fine,, but on a idea/intellectual level, can be boring. If you can pinpoint a thesis in these lyrics, then share them with me, but I can read in them is "I'm sad about a person", or, even more vaguely, just "I'm sad".

@matthewvwise this song is about his younger brother, jim, who was schizophrenic. jim ended up committing suicide after being in solitary confinement for 4 years due to his condition. Especially since they were raised in foster care due to their mother's own mental illness so he felt the need to protect and take care of his kid brother. it's mourning, forgiving, accepting jim's death but at the same time he hasn't found hope anywhere he's looked. so the underlying despair is heavy.

Read up on the bands website about their background and meaning of some of the songs such as this one. The lyrics aren't meaningless.
