Great show that probably can never be properly replicated on American TV these days. Almost every show seemed to end on a note that was bittersweet if not entirely somber. Astro would save the day, but the cold reality of being a robot and treated as a lesser element of society would always be there. Often good characters would be introduced and then killed off by the end of the episode. In this respect it really stands out from the other cartoons I watched in the 80s.

So the Americans added the music, Tezuka liked it enough to have it translated into Japanese and used for the Japanese airing...and then pretty much all anime after that used the same kind of theme song until, what, Creamy Mami in '83? I know they were still doing the old kind in '82 because of Macross, but Creamy Mami and Fist of the North Star had the modern variety.
