  • i think i raped the replay button..

  • you can hear the pain when their sangin

  • @hoopdreams2g2btru it`s not pain it`s hope

  • this is so strong seriously

  • can you send me the lyrics to this song asap please if possible

    thank you

    12/5

  • Not bobbing my head out of the respect of the men who shared their pain of being oppressed simply by being a different color than their oppressors. Listening more to the pain, the frustration, the bottled anger and the passion of being hated and punished for nothing more than being God's creation. This IS NOT "HEAD BOBBING" music.

  • @ariellaserafina all music is potentially head bobbing music, pain is an ingredient can make music great

  • Fine Music. I really do like this. Thank you for posting.

  • Gold for the ears mined from deepest despair.

  • 3 faggotz

  • @bariskeskin nice ignorance

  • This shook me to the core.

  • Oh wow thanks for this. Alan lomax and his father were geniuses

  • when the problems hit the man his music become better! cause it comes from the soul

  • sing it sing it!!! goodness

  • I can relate being the only white guy in a 50 member Baptist choir while being the guest of the state in the deep rural south.

  • Well I'm sittin over here on a Parchment Farm, Ain't never done nobody no harm......

  • Wow! Good thing we had Alan Lomax so this would survive...

  • Hauntingly moving

  • I grew up in the segregated South, and I know first hand how wrongly American Blacks were treated. As a child, I played with black children who were my friends, but couldn't drink outta the same water fountain as me, or use the same bathroom. I didn't like it then, and I'm glad that things in this country have changed. In regards to this music, it amazes me how much intense spiritual power can be created in conditions of such abject misery and adversity. The human spirit is a marvel...

  • @bear83706 I couldn't agree with you more mate. Like a phoenix, the human spirit will not simply let itself be eaten up by the fire, it will come back, again and again.

  • yep the reason was they was blk and white dudes can't do hard labor without getting sick

  • @darryL804 thats funny

  • Their suffering is palpable. I weep for them and tank God for my own blessings.

  • @PawPossum many of them were in prison for a reason.

  • @BenjaminKuruga yes, they told their lies. Some "disrespected' white people, approached white women, tried to vote, and some even did the unmentionable - they dared to stick up for themselves and their families when mistreated.

  • @bruin03 Some killed, some murdered, some raped, and some stole.

  • @BenjaminKuruga ...AND, i'm guessing some were imprisoned wrongly..........

  • @TheJJHawk Sure.

  • I can't believe this. I allways wanted to hear these original slave songs. Oh my god.

  • So...who else is bobbing their head?

  • let's argue about some bullshit!

  • music! cheers.

  • Thank-you for sharing this.

  • Is there anyone who knows anymore information about this song. I have a teacher who told me the "lead singer" was a man they called 22. Anything will help. I'd like to learn more about my roots.

  • Beautiful

  • @twh1114 same thing i said

  • makes you wonder what the egyptians and myans and cavemen were singing?

  • Dave Van Ronk plays a variation of this on his song "Rocks and Gravel" - it's on the "Two Sides Of" album.

  • Any chance you could post "Tangle Eye Blues"? That's the most moving one on the CD in my opinion.

  • i have never heard music less contrived-- this is a field recording of pure experience, of eternal hell fire

  • Does anyone know where i can get this song!?

  • @smoothie94 you can get it on youtube. Use keyword Prison Songs - Early In The Mornin'

  • That;s AWESOME!!

  • the link to the video on youtube wont post, but copy this phrase "TreZure - Early In The Morning @ Southpaw, Brooklyn, NYC, 11/28/09." and you will find a good version of my interpolation of Early In the Morning, my favorite chain gang song.

  • @treZuretheempress Wow Trez!! Great moves. Great emotion. Great rendition. I want to hear more. Bless you for keeping the spirit of this music alive. Do you have any interest in the really "bawdy" (wink) songs of the past ... "shave 'em dry" by Bessie Jackson ... "the dirtier dozens" by Speckled Red? Let me know and I'll send you links. The lyrics are quite filthy so i dont want to send them without asking you first. Peace.

  • Hi all. This is utterly enthralling and I am grateful for the posting. I hunted about and found these lyrics. I need help with the final portion, which I tried to figure out on my own as best I could. I hope this is helpful. Peace out to the Blues:

  • Music at it's purist form, without all the production fluff. Very human.

  • No doubt the recording was very happy, until the breath of the singers gave the touch suffered the song sounded as distinct notes. Many thanks for posting.

  • I followed this through Paul Oliver's book depicting the historical accounts of the history of the blues

    thank you for this :--)

  • CHORUS:

    Well-a, it's-a, Lordy, Ro-Lordy-Berta,

    END CHORUS

  • I love this song thanks for the lyrics.

  • The CD (Lomax) comes with the lyrics and the background to the recordings and Parchman. A good companion book is Oshinko's _Worse than Slavery_.
