JUST MISSED!!! "This Little Girl Is Mine" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 18 weeks in the Top 100 in 1981!!! {It was Mr. Bonds first charted record since "Copy Cat" charted on Aug. 25th, 1962}
In the 70s, Springsteen closed 4 hour shows with 20 minute versions of Bonds' Quarter to Three. Band members would pull him off the stage again, and again, and again, only to have him reappear playing the song.
I met Gary after a show in 2005 and we talked for about 15 minutes.
Bruce contacted him in the early 80s, and as payback, wrote a number of songs for him, including this one, & produced a great comeback album.
It gave his career, and finances, a big boost. He's very fond of Bruce.
Oh, yeah. This song says it all! So many assholes out there trying to hook up with someone else's woman. I hate guys like that. This song is a nice wake up call of whup-ass! Mess with a king's queen, and your ace is mine.
OMG!!! Okay, I have to share...This Little Girl Is Mine happens to be my earliest memory of a favorite song. Every time it came on the radio, I would get so happy and ask my parents to turn up the volume for me. I was so little, I took the song literally and thought it was about a father proudly declaring just *who* his daughter is. Hahaha!
BooBooLane, please don't be so harsh. Bruce came across Gary playing small clubs and couldn't believe this great musical legend and his idol was playing there... so he got him the record deal, loaned out his song and Miami Steve... and they all made one great, great lp together. Gary appreciates what they did for him and probably would be embarrassed if he read what you wrote. Peace.
God, the 1980's were a fantastic time for comebacks of all sorts---Tina Turner, John Fogerty, The Everly Brothers and of course, Gary US Bonds. Can you imagine if all four of these acts got together today to do some kind of a tour? The talent from all these people. Oh, Jesus. It would put every act on the radio today to shame.
Great live version. I remember loving this song when it came out, then I heard it over the weekend and had to hear it again. It makes you want to move!!
Regarding who wrote this and who made it famous: Bruce Springsteen wrote this song, and Gary recorded it on the album "Dedication." That's why he thanked Bruce-for writing him a single that wound up reaching #11 in '81. Bruce also wrote a few more songs for Gary (some also written by Steve Van Zandt) on Gary's '82 album, "On The Line." Bruce and/or Steve also produced the tracks on the two albums. The entire E Street band played for Gary on both of these albums.
Bonds is more famous writing/producing for other artists.He was an icon to Sringsteen before he became famous himself. They became close friends and began collaborating. Bonds wrote the song, but as you heard him thank Bruce in this video, Springsteen made it a hit.For many many years, Bonds has not received the credit he deserves from the public simply because you don't often hear his name. People assume he had a couple hits and that was it.He is still very active in the industry.
@ALEXANDER40K Actually, Springsteen wrote the song for Bonds. He has never recorded it himself. Springsteen did play Bonds', "Quarter to Three," before and after he was famous. I saw them play Quarter to Three together at two sold-out Shea Stadium shows, 10/3 and 10/4/03, at the end of Springsteen's, "The Rising," tour.
Bonds is very grateful to Springsteen, who wrote most of the songs on his 1981 comeback album, including, "This Little Girl."

Gary U.S. Bonds looked young in this video, considering how old he must've been at that time.
