Gold has little intrinsic value as it is used for little. Simply substituting gold for paper money is just one fiat for another. Give me a barrel of oil, or a bushel of corn, a pack of cigarettes or even silver. Gold is an emotional leap. While I don't disagree gold could go higher, or that the dollar and other currencies are very flawed, what we need are honest currency markets which would lead to appropriate pricing of currencies based on the ability to repay by the issuing nation.
Thats not strictly true - Gold's intrinsic value comes from the capital investment and labour it takes to extract it. It also stores wealth unlike paper money because it cannot be destroyed, and has a fixed supply. Not to mention historical data to back this up. 1 ounce of gold buys more or less what it did 2000 years ago, and oil priced in gold has remained very stable, unlike oil prices in dollars.
