I wasn't in New Orleans, I was outside. Our Parish president didn't issue us an evacuation warning until that Saturday I believe. And even then it wasn't mandatory. It's kind of hard to just pick up and go a week in advance when you're in school and you work, and I had classes right up until that Saturday. Also, it wasn't the storm that was the bad part, it was the levee failure and the MRGO that did us and the lower 9th ward in. We were supposed to be safe.

He came on the NEWS DAYS before the storm and said that the National Hurricane Center told him how bad it would be and to evacuate the city. Nagin said that BUSH would NOT return his calls.. Bush gave the warning to the state to evacuate. He's president, not royalty. He can only do so much. He cannot decide over what the state laws are, and cannot force a state to do something even if it is for their own good.
I am an AmeriCorps NCCC alumni. So far we've done 65% of the clean-up in the Gulf Coast. There is still so much work to do down there. I think anyone living down there can agree that volunteer oranizations like AmeriCorps are doing more for people than the government ever did. I mean, they put you up in a FEMA trailer...then what? We had over 11 ft of water in my house from Katrina.My neighbors died trying to get into thier attic.I am so blessed to be alive.But do you want the TRUTH? NAGIN told us to evacuate! He came on the NEWS DAYS before the storm and said that the National Hurricane Center told him how bad it would be and to evacuate the city. Nagin said that BUSH would NOT return his calls.. BUSH would NOT give the nessecary "OK" for it to be MANDATORY. And THAT is the TRUTH!!!

I am an AmeriCorps NCCC alumni. So far we've done 65% of the clean-up in the Gulf Coast. There is still so much work to do down there. I think anyone living down there can agree that volunteer oranizations like AmeriCorps are doing more for people than the government ever did. I mean, they put you up in a FEMA trailer...then what? Bush proposed for AmeriCorps*NCCC's funding to be cut for the current fiscal year.

Katrina was going to hit no matter what anyone did. Its the response that is appauling. To out utter shame, we abandoned our fellow Americans, and no amount of apologies can fix that, but I will say it. I'm sorry. Whatever bonds of fellowship that tried to foster since 9/11, failed. People who claim they are sick & tired of the news coverage for Katrina...just focus on yourselves, and mind your own business. The rest of us will have to try and help in the meanwhile.

Second, people forget that whites were looting when Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992, AND they were shooting at rescue helicopters.
