Cults suck. They do many things without asking one if it's ok. If one doesn't enjoy lewd reggeaton & cursing others in Spanglish, one is some sort of weirdo. My method of defense is simply to be separate, silent, and keeping my true thoughts forever in a fortress. I don't fit it, I never will, & I lost my desire to change the world, especially on the clock. Can't live w/them, but can't live w/o them. :( I simply know my policies & use that as guidelines to execute duties for a paycheck. Sigh.
@rosenoirex I can also relate. Sometimes silence is golden and so is humoring those who have the power. When I was assistant manager several years ago I used to recommend that we listen to a variety of music; each person was allowed to bring in a CD of their own and we would take turns listening to a variety of music as we did "busy work".
(2/2): I took 3 succulent flavors, & nobody touched them bc they were too fascinated with the greasy ham & egg burritos. Don't get me wrong, I love greasy food! But I love balance, & I can't imagine having greasy champurrado or greasy cake as dessert after enjoying greasy burritos. Today they offered me tamales& a donutt. I said no thank you bc I had already had breakfast at home, why am I going to stuff myself just to fit in? They insisted so much that I accepted the donut & took it home.
@rosenoirex Greasy ham and egg burritos? Let me guess! You work with a bunch of dim and pot bellied lard asses? If they aren't Stay Puft Marshmallow people yet they will be soon. I have to keep away from that high-calorie Mexican food because the fat will come on very easily. And before you know it your clothing will not fit anymore. It's a pain to purchase new clothing when money is tight. I love soul food and desserts but it's not worth gaining weight; looking terrible; and feeling awful.
(1/2): I'm grateful for my job, but they have some group activities I find questionable. Like, every wk is "goodie Fri." 3 people are assigned to take food. It's nice, it would be nicer if they ask one in advance. They don't, they just say "Next wk is your turn," & you can't say no bc you're already on the calendar." Well, that wk I happened to be broke, but since the other girl assigned said she'll bring eggs & ham, I thought I could bring one of my favorite foods-- yogurt w/almonds!
@dutytocareforothers Oh, totally! When the lady told me on Mon. that on Fri. I was assigned to bring something, it was inconvenient. It would've been different if they passed around a calendar where everyone can choose when it is most convenient for them. The Fri. after the one I was assigned would have been SO much better for me. But to explain to them WHY was so embarrassing, that I just accepted & somehow made it happen, even though in the end the yogurt turned out to be very unpopular. Lol.
@dutytocareforothers (1/2) Another thing they seem to subtly demand are birthday contributions. When it's someone's birthday, they ask everyone for $. My cubicle neighbor's birthday is coming up, & when I was asked to contribute, I said I would buy her something separately (when I give somebody something, it's special-- all or nothing-- & since we both love Sanrio, I KNOW what she'll want). That could've been the end of the $-begging.
@dutytocareforothers (2/2)Days later the lady collected $ again, & she stopped by my desk to make sure that I was going to contribute to a present somehow. I reassured her that I will buy something separately, but now it feels forced. I can't help but wonder what would happen if I fail to show up with a present. I couldn't possibly get fired for that, but I'd certainly join the black list of runner-ups when times get tough. I don't think I can afford it to investigate. :( I'll just buy something
It seems like all of society's major institutions ARE cults. I can't think of a job or school I have belonged to that did not fit the definition of the cult. Different jobs have different "work cultures," and you are seen as the odd one if you don't fit in at least 90%. I often have trouble blending in and fitting in not bc I'm a freak, but bc I value my independence. I have trouble fitting in completely to ANY category or culture-- I'm a kaleidoscope.

@rosenoirex People "assigned" to take food is certainly cultic and inconvenient. I'm sorry to hear about that mess.

@rosenoirex Yogurt w/almonds is popular over where I am at. People also like cottage cheese because it has protein and low fat.
