  • @666gladiator

I actually agree with everything you said, except one thing, see you called Travis Barker an artist, he's not an artist he is just some retarded berzerker who happens to be holding drumsticks and sitting behind an expensive (ugly) drumkit while someone was filming him. I don't hate the guy though, I just don't understand why he is so vastly overated.

  • Had a workshop with him today :) loved to work with him ^^

  • billy heart was the KING of this DVD

  • Unreal, the 4 dislikes must be the crackheads - freakin' legend playing on his leg, golden, golden.

  • I met this guy last year.. what a freaking egotistical douchebag. Id kill this guy on drums any day.. Listen to what he's playing here.. wack. I know this dude's a "legend" but in this case i think it just means he's just old

  • @77mcbaker I met Dave Leibman and felt the same way, but I now think back and recognized it might have just been an off day for him. Musicians don't always have the best personalities off stage, but we come to hear the music. I like personable musicians though, but don't take Hart's comments to heart. I would re-listen to his work with the other giants. Jazz drumming isn't always about killing all the time, it's about supporting. We're in the rhythm section, not up front (guitarist talking).

  • @77mcbaker Sir, as I read it, your graceless and decidedly ageist put-down reveals a less than perfect personality in the critic. Mr Hart is 71 y.o.a.; can't you cut him a bit of slack? Were you perhaps expecting more attention than he had to give you? As for how you'd kill him on drums, will you play drums better than he does now when YOU are 71? His legendary status is, of course, partly due to his associations during a golden era, but that is at least partially true of most jazz "greats".

  • who can tell me what the belong stick is? Sorry for my poor listening. lol

  • if you get the chance and if you can find any videos check out "big"sid catlett"s brush work, he was a beautiful player with an unbelievable style and technique.

  • Steve Smith and Billy Hart, whoa!

  • @666gladiator But Travis Baker is not impressive...

  • brushes. sound great and clean your drums too!

  • If anyone here wants to see Billy Hart @ Iridium Jazz Club tomorrow OCt 27 discount tickets email me ceo @ nycmetropromo (dot) com

  • regal tip classic brushes. just sayin

  • saw him play tonight at the hamlet restaurant at moonstone garden, AMAZING! he played with tim armacost it was pretty impressive.

  • How long do brushes tend to last?

    I have no clue... I'm just a beginner... :D

    Reply back.. Thanks... :)

  • Quite a while... I've had this current pair of brushes almost four years now. And through out this whole time, only a minimal number of wires have been bent, and to my knowledge, they've only lost about 5 or 6 wires combined. Now granted I only play with my brushes about 15-20% of the time, but, even still, brushes should last quite a long time. Get a good, quality pair. It's almost like an investment. And In case you're wondering, I use the Vic Firth Jazz Brush. Good luck!

    -Dan

  • Thanks so much bud... :D I really appreciate that...

I do need a set of brushes... They are just so great.. :P

I love hearing people play them..

    Thanks again...

    -Rowdy

  • @rowdyfish ... I've played both the metal and the plastic brushes. I feel that the plastic is more durable but you loose a lot of feel and the sensitivity is lost. The metal brushes are nice for sliding "brushing" the drum. I do like the plastic for louder druming where the plastic seems to have louder cymbal hits. I suggest you buy both that way you are covered for either style. Vic Firth makes some really nice brushes. Check out Clayton Cameroon videos and some Max Roach videos.

  • Haha... It's funny... I just went out and bought me some heritage brushes.. :D I absolutely love 'em

  • depends on how good you take care of them and how good your brushes are.

what kind of brushes do you have?

  • depends on what brushes and how u use them. some could last a lifetime, some might only last for a shorter time

  • @rowdyfish my first drum instructor had his brushes prolly 20 or 30 years. As long as you take care of them and play with them right they should last for a long time. Don't be one of those guys that tries to play a rock beat with his brushes. I saw a video of a kid doing that and wanted to stab him in the eye with his brushes lol. If you want to do that, buy blast sticks or whatever they're called

  • I hired Billy for a date in 1993 in Washington, DC. He was, of course, amazing. I had written a samba chart on "Cielito Lindo"...he brought the house down with his solo. One of the most memorable nights of my playing career.

    Ron MIlls, Piano

  • play with brushes are a relief for our ears ;)

  • Damn that looks fun!

  • As honey dripping over your soul. Amazing! The living history of music

  • Jubali. Lot of greats love playing with this guy.

  • Just cos this guy isn't joey jordison or mike portnoy playign some eager to impress, robotic, note-filled pattern, people automatically dismiss it. This is REAL drumming!!

  • i mean high hat and snare common bang on a cymbol or somthing

  • billy's bad!

I had the chance to have a few workshops with him. Meeting him and hearing him play changed my view on drumming and on music in general: You don't want to sound 'good' or 'accurate'. You want to sound authentic, original and musically! Sounds logic, but sometimes one seems to get lost about what it's actually all about. Billy is so unique, and for me that makes him one of the hippest drummers alive.

  • @ Paul Moreau... that's why is the MOST booked drummer in the world - with over 300 concerts a year with the best musicians (from Miles to Getz to Lovano, Brecker etc.).... he supports the music instead of banging around... 600 recordings - what you say?

  • ok, I won't say you are wrong!

but what i meant is that when you compare him to drummers like Thomas Lang, Mike

Portnoy, modern drummers; he wouldn't fit in.

but again, he is a pro at what he's doin, there won't be a doubt 'bout that.

  • @ Paul... how dare you compare Thomas Lang with Billy Hart... how dare you??! Lang is a technical overkill (who cares!) while Billy is a musician... sorry to say that...!!

  • you know what guys...

    screw you all.

I am admitting this is an amazing musician, but that it's just not a modern drummer...

    goddamned...

  • lol... okay, okay. I accept your statement ;)

  • thanks, i meant nothing wrong with my first comment...

just don't get my words wrong. I'll say it again, he's at the top of jazz!

  • people still play brazilian jazz... dumbass

  • go fuck yourself and live a life?

    Leave this damn comment alone.

I can have my own opinion or not?

  • We can also have OUR opinion about YOU in this public forum, but yeah, go ahead and have one back...

Alright I'll admit I was merely trolling you. No offense intended. Your comment was mild, depending on the person... yup, its all opinion.

    (= Cheers.

  • lol i'd hate to see the guys you mention play brushes! :)

  • Nice playing...........

  • I met Billy once, he was the nicest guy (Not to mention one of, if not the best Jazz drummers I've ever seen!)

  • great stuff

  • i love billy hart!

  • Billy Hart is waaay Badass!!!!!!!

  • i second that motion

  • you learn more from watching this video than you learn watching all the expert village clips

  • man but obviously. no doubt.

you can even learn so much more from this video even if you close your eyes, relax and just ear it....and even if you fall sleep you just can learn more than watching expert village clips.

    lol. XD

  • why dont more drummers have that attitude.

  • It's Samba de Orfeu by Luis Bonfá, but with a chromatic substitute progression in measures 11-12 of the A section.

  • Me either:L

I love that song! Awesome drums!

  • yeah i go to the same school where he teaches at

  • where does he teach at?

  • i saw him and he was amazing!

  • This is one cool dude playing the drums!

  • love the guy

  • Billy Hart is a great human...amazig musical player!

  • very nice
