one of my all time favorite 70's bands ..been a favorite since the 70's..no music like 70's music ya heard! and yes I am a 57 yr old Black Canadian woman now living in the US
Chicago was one of my first concerts...saw them yearly from 1970-1978,,,went to a "reunion" concert last year....no Peter Cetera....very short on the horns....just not the same. I've decided to live with memories...watching Pop-pops play just ain't the same as picturing the hot guys in tight bell bottoms! lol
This is such a wonderful treat. To see them when that sound was new and they were clearly having a huge time with just playing music--what a great time it must have been. Kath was clearly lovin' it all.
Your comment showed up in my email, metamorphosis67. I am aware of all things Chicago as the band is close family and rehearsed in my home (Walter Parazaider's parent's, my grandparent's home) before they made it big and I was along for the ride all through out their success. After Terry died, never the same. Terry added soul and blues in a way they never had again. I miss him eveyday as he was family to me. Walter is my uncle but so is Terry~ just not blood. I grew up with them all.
@Debish1000 Wow, that is cool to have one of Walt's family posting on here. Walt is our family favorite here, he even signed my daughter's flute case at an Atlantic City concert in Nov. of 2005. This raw video is fantastic, Kath is like a bundle of nervous energy fueling the show and I can surely now see how his death would have been such as huge impact. But they still tour, and I have seen them about 8 times, they ar emy favorite band of all time!
@Debish1000 I agree totally with what you said. When Terry died, I remember my friends and I were in shock (HUGE Chicago fans--we all were in band). You are right, Chicago was never the same after that.
You can FEEEEEL the energy just POURING out of Terry!!!!! I'll never, I mean NeVeR understand why he is not considered one of the best rock guitarists of all time. And Peter makes me want to pick up a bass RIGHT NOW!!!
I don't care what anyone says-Chicago was and will always be the SHIT. Would have loved a guitar-off between Terry kath and Eddie Van Halen. I was first exposed to this group in 1969-1970. Just amazing sound.
Agreed! Terry was amazing. Notice how a lot of his rhythm gtr were repeated down strokes, rather than up-down strumming? The energy never let up for a second.
best song by them...I remember in 1971 they played at the international ampetheater on the south side of Chicago..I was a kid of nine going to see the Black Expo with Sesame Street Live with my family and I was bored with the show. from another stage I heard some amazing music so I snuck off from my seat to hear what it was...They were just starting "does anybody really know what time it is" and I was transfixed. My aunt came looking for meabout thirty minutes later and dragged me away
This song came out in 1970 , hit the billboard charts in 1971. So imagine when this song was popular when The Aristocats , M*A*S*H , Airport , Patton , The French Connection , Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory , Fiddler on the Roof , & Clockwork Orange came out. The early 70's were a psychadelic , groovy & trippy time with some kick ass music that defined the culture.
@Trashfished Yes , but disco has always been getting a bum rap. There was some really crappy disco , but there are some songs that were great from that era ``Kiss You All Over'' Exile , ``If i Can't Have You'' Yyvone Elliman , ``Just the Way You Are'' Billy Joel , ``Night Fever'' Bee Gee's , ``Dust in the Wind'' Kansas , ``Rich Girl'' Hall & Oates , ``Bohemian Rhapsody'' Queen. Not disco , but they came from that period.
@Retrofanatic10 Me and me best friend in the mid-late 70s were heavy into Sabbath. However by the time the nineties came around I was buying BeeGees C.D.s!! So true but funny how I had to grow up to appreciate Exile and Barry. etc.
@Trashfished I was born in `88 , and was introduced to this music by my parents. I never was into heavy metal type music , but I love classic rock and soft rock. The music has to have some kind of melody to me.
OMG....Doesn't matter where we are. I will stop what I'm doing, lip sing and play air guitar, drums and horns....What.....For real....Im a 49 yr old black lady who is down like brown....Can you feel me. Can I get an AMEN....
All the garage bands in the 60s and 70s wanting to be like Chigago knew we didnt stand a chance against these guys. None of us dared to play a horn. We knew to stay away and just to enjoy their influence on us.
Danny Seraphine (not sure of the spelling) on the drums was awesome..keeping in tempo with the horns and the rest of the group...doesnt get enough credit..
I was only 2 when this song came out (1969). However, I do remember hanging out and listening to music in the car during the early 70s in this most remarkable period of music. Playing in the street with the neighborhood kids with such quality music which was appreciated even by someone who wasn't even 10 yet.
I feel fortunate that I was there when the shit went down, even if I was very young at the time.
I have never been able to understand why Robert lamb has not been used more in the last twenty years of the band. he and terry were the early sound of Chicago.
I saw Billy Joel open up for Chicago in San Francisco in 1971. No one knew who Billy Joel was. That was a sparkling opening (all of Piano Man was his concert) to a great Chicago show, with this song as one of the highlights. They did play the tribute to Richard Nixon song, I remember that one, and I'm A Man! Yes I am, can't help but love Chicago so.
@mulvfxst Sick! And the Beatles' manager was told "Sorry, Mr. Epstein, bands with guitars are definitely on the way out!" Thank god record labels and fat cats did not daunt these melodic heroes!
@mulvfxst i wonder what executive genius told them to get rid of the horn section, that's as much a blunder as Decca Records not signing the beatles..
@mulvfxst WELL WE ALL KNOW BY NOW,,WHOEVER SAID GET RID OF JAMES PANKOW AND COMPANY HAD THERE HEAD SHOVED SOO FAR UP THERE ASS,THEY COULD TASTE WHAT THEY ATE FOR LUNCH LAST YEAR!!! GOD BLESS YOU TERRY KATH!!! MAN YOU'LL BE SORELY MISSED!!
@mulvfxst They were holding out to be the band that had their first album as a double album. Blood Sweat and Tears thgerefore got out first and some think they copied them. My grandfather's band inspired my uncle to come out with this sound.
@Debish1000 Early Chicago is much more advanced musically than Blood Sweat & Tears. Lamm & Pankow songs are actually composed & then performed, not developed from some jam session. They were both schooled musicians, along with Loughnane & Parazadier whereas Kath, Cetera & Seraphine were great ear players who had developed way beyond where most ear players develop, probably from hanging around with the rest of those guys. Bill Chase had a great Jazz-Rock band called Chase during this period.
@metamorphosis67 Actually, you got that exactly backwards. A cursory listen should show you that BS&T arrangements would be impossible without some SERIOUS understanding of music theory and that early Chicago is much more of a jam band. I'm not biased, I love both bands, but BS&T's music is far more complex and very, very structured.
@tdelamont More complex or not argument aside, you can't have a "jam" without knowing the theory. Personally, I think both bands were about equal as far as composition goes.
@mulvfxst That's how STUPID and money-driven record execs think! Never long-term, never about musical integrity, never about evevating and evolving music as one of the arts.

One of my favorite all time songs ever. It still takes my breath away. Color of chills all over my body ... I try to put it into words. Thank you Chicago for your wonderful sound and the memories it ignites.
Madonna is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame but this band isn't.....there ought to be a class action lawsuit for this injustice. Justice may be blind, but it isn't deaf..
It's To Bad That 85% of The Band Were Stoned But The Crowd Didn't Care Because 90+% Were Stoned Too. But They Finally Realized That To Make It Big They Had To Clean Up, Most Did And Their Popularity Soared From There.
great stuff - they were beyond their years. (I'm looking for that can't-sit-still percussion ending - that was like frosting on a favorite cake - where is it??)
Whos the guy on the trumpet? i hear stuff about everybody else but nothing about the dude on teh trumpet, whats his name? i know they(the band and all the musicans) were always inder rated but it doesnt show that guy at all...someobdy tell me lol
You can tell by looking at them that the boys knew they'd really hit a groove that night. This version almost swings. I love Danny's basic little drum kit. Rock on, boys.
Good God, one of my favorites by Chicago. But, painfully slow. That would drive me crazy playing this live at this tempo. A little too slow.....But beautiful.
debbydoo, well I am 64 now and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, living in Waikiki on Seaside Ave and Kalakaua. Listened to their first Double Album. Chicago Transit Authority. Ahhhh, those were the days with no worries. Went to sea on a Submarine and listened to this on a reel to reel tape over and over and over. Live it.
@juantoletemex gracias por haber subido este material de una de las bandas emblemáticas de los 60s, 70s, es parte de mis recuerdos, gracias otra vez!!
I remember hanging with them when they were the house band at The Cheetah in Old Town, Chicago.I'd sit back stage waiting for the then house band, Chicago Transit Authority as they were known then to finish there set. Loved every song they played.Party's in the back were classic! I love you guy's.Sure miss Terry.78 was a bad year.
Back in the 1970's (Believe it was 1970), my dad and his friends saw Chicago in Atlantic City. They talked to them after the show and being polite, they invited them back to their place for a few drinks. Suprisingly one member actually showed up, and that was the great Jimmy Pankow, the trombone player. My dad still mentions how friendly he was and generous he was to answer any questions they threw at him.
I know I wore out there albums and yes, their album covers and inserts were so great. I probably played and listened to Chicago more than any other band or that era.
I agree that Chicago should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's way overdue. I would suggest that to get it done, we all need to start calling up the radio stations en masse and for several months requesting that they be nominated and elected. Perhaps the voice of the people will prevail. Maybe we can start something right from here.
GRACIAS AMIGO¡¡ POR SUBIR... ESTE TEMA.... EN SERIO AQUEL 15 DE ENERO JAMÀS LO OLVIDARÈ.... ME INTERESA MUCHO ESTE RECITAL.... QUE MELODIA TAN HERMOSA.... JAJA QUIEN DIRIA TENER FOTOS CON LOS DE CHICAGO...JEJE GRACIAS AMIGO ESTA ROLA, SIEMPRE ME PONE FELIZ..... SALUDOS¡¡¡¡ Y QUE GUAPO SIGUE ROBERT LAMM..... YEAH¡¡¡
When this was made Chicago was as good as band in the country. This song has texture and dimensions that would normally be associated with much more experienced musicians. In1970 Kath and Lamm were 24 and 26 respectively.
They were a very good band and at one time I greatly admired them. Then came the mid 1970's and I lived on the property next to Caribou Ranch in Nederland, Colorado. Some members of Chicago had a bad habit of playing with guns and intimidating people. I remember when Terry shot himself and even though it was a tragic loss of a good musician there were several people in town who didn't feel very badly about it. There were also a few that said he should have taken Steven Stills with him..
Just a few months after I got my driver's license, a shy 16 year old, I asked a pretty girl I'd had an impossible crush on to the outdoor Chicago concert in Atlanta. Turns out we barely had anything to talk about, but the memory of hearing this song on a late spring evening in the fresh air with my whole life in front of me makes me wish I could live it all over again.
@eslgurucalif That is so sweet. It's little memories and perfect music in the backdrop of a nice experience that makes the whole thing feel beautiful when looking back.
What I like about Chicago is: each member of the band contributes something & there's several writers instead of one person w/ an ego trip upstaging everyone else.
Back in the sixties I played in a horn band. We kept hearing about this great horn band in Chicago... so we took off one weekend to go check it out. It was Chicago and we were knocked out! These guys were just incredible. 3 years ago I got to meet them before a show... I was knocked out again... plus we had front row seats!
Madonna is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame but this band isn't.....there ought to be a class action lawsuit for this injustice. Justice may be blind, but it isn't deaf..
You're kidding? No shit? Chicago is not in the R&RHOF? Then who the fuck should be in there if not them? Aw man, thats bullshit ! sorry for the expletives
@rsharrieff I could not agree more. Jan Wenner has something out for them. Damn if ABBA could make it in, then why not Chicago. Who's next, Hermans Hermits?
@clearsurf12 Great bands like Chicago, Boston, WAR, KISS, and Skynard have all been neglected by this so called ROCK N ROLL TRASH CAN OF RAME..Madonna...for what did see ever do except ruin a classic like Amercian Pie by Don Mclean. To hell will that Hall of Fame...heck the placed in the wrong city cause places like Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans are THE BIRTH PLACES OF ROCK N ROLL not Cleveland...wait did not the record have to play Allan Freed - enuff said..
@kissmusiclover Hey, man, don't blame us in Cleveland. We're not the ones who make the choice of who gets in to the Rock Hall. That's all done by the power brokers in New York City. Heck, we've been having to fight and scratch just to get an induction ceremony once in a while. As for Alan Freed, he is credited for producing the first actual rock concert, the Moondog Coronat

You can tell by looking at them that the boys knew they'd really hit a groove that night. This version almost swings. I love Danny's basic little drum kit. Rock on, boys.

Love the dude in blue that is thrashing thru the whole song. I thought Angus Young was up there for a minute.lol
frogsoda 9 months ago
@frogsoda The dude in blue is Terry Kath. Jimi Hendryx called him the best guitarist he had ever heard. Chicago's best sound died when Terry died.

Live it.

RIP Terry Kath. We lost you 33 years ago today. You were the leader of this group. No doubt about it.

To hell will that Hall of Fame...heck the placed in the wrong city cause places like Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans are THE BIRTH PLACES OF ROCK N ROLL not Cleveland...wait did not the record have to play Allan Freed - enuff said..
kissmusiclover 11 months ago
@kissmusiclover Hey, man, don't blame us in Cleveland. We're not the ones who make the choice of who gets in to the Rock Hall. That's all done by the power brokers in New York City. Heck, we've been having to fight and scratch just to get an induction ceremony once in a while. As for Alan Freed, he is credited for producing the first actual rock concert, the Moondog Coronat
