For those of you in the US, if you can't get to Paris because of whatever...don't forget the Paris of the US...New Orleans, the birthplace of Sidney Bichet, and so many great musicians and the birthplace of jazz! We were the seat of government for the French colony of Louisiane for the first half of the 1700's and then we became Spanish until we again became governed by France in 1803, only to be sold to the USA by Napoleon. Our rich cultural history is like no other place in the USA.

@EnjoyingYourself Exactly what the movie did to me too, I convinced my parents to take me there. 27th december till 30 dec I was there. In the night when I was getting ready for dinner I would put this music on, very loudly on a little speaker I brought with me, looked out the window and I saw the eiffeltower. Felt like I was in a dream.. I will be going back in april and i will go study there in august. All thanks to Woody Allen for making such an inspiring movie and a life changing one for me

Yes, I agree. I was mistaken. as a boy I used to see steel clarinets in thrift stores and pawn shops. When I heard Bechet recordings years ago, I automatically made an assumption that he was playing a steel clarinet. His pre-Coltrane sound also threw me off. I'd heard Coltrane's recordings and the sound was so different, not the sound of Bechet. Anyway, I am glad to see the error, and the truth of the matter.

It's not a soprano sax. Bechet is playing what is called a "steel clarinet". You can find them in just about any pawn shop in the United States. Google it, you'll see.

I'm sorry "@kb1ibh" but this is not a clarinet that Bechet is playing here. This is a soprane sax, a sax a bit more high that the alt sax.

The clarinet that you are hearing here is Claude Luter, a french clarinetist.

Bechet also was clarinetist, but not in this theme.

For an old Parisian expatriate like me (I moved to California 42 years ago), the emotional impact of this movie was almost too much to bear. Wonderful images, witty dialogues and, of course, Bechet's music. I was 23 when Sidney passed away and, with him, died the spirit and the magic of the Quartier Latin. Bitter sweet memories that I will cherish until the end of my days.

Sidney (and Joe Oliver) were heavy influcences on a young aspiring Louis Armstrong. You can really hear the heavy vibrato in this track that Armstrong went on to do so well. Beautiful. And kudos go to Woody Allen for putting this track (full & uninterrupted) as the opening to the film "Midnight in Paris." A wonderful homage, to Paris and Bechet, and exposing this golden oldies to a new generation.
